Will Kelly Clarkson show her midriff? What will Madge wear at halftime? Pop-culture bets give football-phobes plenty to tune in for Sunday.
By James Montgomery

Madonna
Photo: Daniel Mihailescu/ AFP/ Getty Images

Not to get all general here, but when you get down to it, there are really only two types of people in the world: those who care about the Super Bowl and those who don’t.

The former will need absolutely zero incentive to tune into this Sunday’s retribution-stoked Super Bowl XLVI, which pits the New England Patriots against the New York Giants in a rematch of one of the most epic Supes of all time, XLII, which saw — wait, if you’re going to watch, you already know what happened in that first championship tilt (David Tyree, Plax Burress on the slant-and-go, 18-1, etc.), and suffice it to say, you’re salivating with anticipation over the next chapter in this rivalry.

For the latter, well, that last paragraph probably makes about as much sense as the fact that the New York Giants actually play their home games in New Jersey, and, as such, there’s no way you’re going to waste your Sunday watching what amounts to 240 minutes of commercials intermittently broken up by the occasional football play (unless you’re anxiously awaiting the premiere of “The Voice,” that is). But, really, you should reconsider that stance — mainly because of prop bets.

For the uninitiated, props (short for “propositions”) are bets placed on the occurrence — or non-occurrence — of events during a game that have little-to-no actual impact on the outcome of that game. Stuff like “Which color Gatorade will the winning team dump on its head coach” or “Number of times (insert name of famous athlete’s girlfriend) will be shown during the TV telecast.” They are supremely silly, not to mention incredibly suicidal, wagers, and not surprisingly — given that it’s the biggest football game of the year — Las Vegas oddsmakers work overtime churning them out during the Super Bowl.

Shoot, more often than not, most of those Super Bowl props have absolutely nothing to do with the game itself. There are not only odds on the length of Kelly Clarkson’s national anthem performance, but what kind of outfit she’ll be wearing while singing it. Which means that, whether you know who BenJarvus Green-Ellis is or not, there are still plenty of reasons to tune in to Sunday’s big game.

So in the hopes of inspiring you non-fans to watch, we’ve reached out to the online oddsmakers at to get their lines on some of the most outrageous Super Bowl prop bets. And in case you’re wondering: Yes, there’s a science to these kinds of things.

“I sat down and watched six to seven videos of Kelly Clarkson singing the anthem at past sporting events, timing all of them,” Bovada head oddsmaker Pat Morrow told MTV News. “Once that was done, I took some things into consideration: that she will be indoors, [that] it is the Super Bowl and people have tendency to take a little longer, and came up with 1 minute, 34 seconds. And I think we are bang-on, because we have had it up over a week and have taken a lot on both sides and have not had to move the number.”

See! So, without further ado, are some of our favorite music-centric prop bets. Oh, and we realize some of the numbers may confuse you, so just consider this: If you were to place $100 on a 2/1 bet, and win, you’d walk away with $200 (plus your $100 back). Conversely, that $100 on a 1/2 bet would net you just $50. If you were to bet $100 on a +200 line, it means you’d take home $200 in profit (plus your initial $100). A line of -200 means you’d need to bet $200 just to win $100 (the more probable the outcome, the more you have to put up to turn a profit; Vegas wasn’t built on winners, after all). Oh, and an over/under bet is simply a wager on whether an event will go over or under the stated time. Confused? Of course you are. After all, prop bets aren’t supposed to be about logic, they’re supposed to be about insanity. So let’s take a look at the lines!

How long will it take Kelly Clarkson to sing the National Anthem?
Over/under: 1 minute, 34 seconds.

What will Kelly Clarkson wear to sing the national anthem?
» Super Bowl XLVI or official NFL shirt: 2/1
» Patriots jersey or shirt: 12/1
» Colts jersey or shirt: 12/1
» Giants jersey or shirt: 15/1
» Anything else: 1/3

Will Kelly Clarkson forget or omit at least one word of the national anthem?
» Yes: 5/2

Will Kelly Clarkson’s bare belly be showing when she sings the national anthem?
» Yes: 3/1

What color will Madonna’s hair be when she begins the Super Bowl halftime show?
» Blonde: -400
» Any other color: +250

Will Madonna wear an NFL jersey or shirt at any point during the Super Bowl halftime show?
» Yes: +250
» No: -400

Will Madonna wear a hat at any point during the Super Bowl halftime show?
» Yes: +150
» No: -200

What will Madonna be using to start the Super Bowl halftime show?
» Headset: -200
» Handheld microphone: +150

Share your own crazy prop-bet ideas in the comments!

They usually offer one “Deal of the Day”, which is a 50% discount code for a book chosen for that one day. But just for for today, they’ve created a discount code — DDJPN — that gives you a 50% discount on their entire catalog, and they give a part of the proceeds to aid Japan relief efforts.

So far they’ve raised over $60,000, and the day is still young. So if you’ve been recently hankering after some nerdy book (or three), now would be a great time to grab one.

It’s not really a secret the Microsoft had planned on bringing bits of Windows Phone 7′s Metro UI to Windows 8, but we haven’t seen a lot of really telling evidence. However, with the Windows 8 milestone 3 build now available to Microsoft Connect partners, it was really just a matter of time before we started to get a peek.

Thanks to Rafael Rivera and Paul Thurrott, we’ve now had a glimpse at what the Windows 8 welcome screen will look like. As you can see, the typography is very Metro indeed. Within Windows also mentions that the background image is customizable, and we’re wondering if it might not pull from your current Windows 8 theme. This particular shot shows the CTRL + ALT + DELETE login option, but we imagine you’ll still be able to log in by clicking your account picture tile as well.

Rivera and Thurrott also mention that the tablet version of the welcome screen will allow you to log in by swiping a pattern on the screen — as you can on current Android devices.

Just a little under two months after its release candidate went live, Windows Home Server (WHS) 2011 has been finalized and released into the wild. The new version of Microsoft’s slick, do-it-all server OS is a big step forward from its predecessor.

Built on the Windows Server 2008 R2 base, Home Server 2011 features a simpler dashboard, a better backup solution, dead simple remote access to your home computers, and Silverlight-powered remote media streaming. For a more detailed look at what’s new in Windows Home Server 2011, you check out Microsoft’s official breakdown.

Drive Extender, of course, didn’t resurface for the final release of WHS 2011 and that’s something a lot of power users are still pretty irked about. Even without Extender, Windows Home Server offers a boatload of useful functionality and might be a good fit for your home network. Manufacturers have already begun building hardware, so you should be able to pick up a device in the very near future.

An evaluation download for Windows Home Server 2011 will be made available in April — we’ll let you know when the links are ready.

Google’s pissed at the Samsung Galaxy Nexus LTE about something because it just effectively stripped away the Nexus title of the Galaxy Nexus.
Here at AMD’s Financial Analyst day, the company had a little demo area which is where we spotted this little number — an ODM reference unit from Compal, stuffed with the company’s upcoming Trinity APU. We’re told the unit above is one of several, which are proof-of-concepts used to convince and show OEMs powerful, yet thin machines the duo hopes they’ll bring to market. Inside this particular prototype is one of the lower voltage variants of Trinity (read: either the 17W or 25W part), which enables that svelte 18mm profile. Seeing as it is a one-off (and one that’ll never come to market in this form), our impressions are moot, yet we’d be remiss if we didn’t point out we were a little dismayed by its chassis, which was flimsy enough to put the existing flex champion, Toshiba’s Z830, on notice. Still, with an estimated starting price of half an Ultrabook (roughly in the $500 to $600 range), we’ll leave it up to you to decide exactly how much you value torsional rigidity. Other then that, viewing angles seemed good from the brief demo reel we watched, and there’s plenty of connectivity onboard, with two USB 3.0 ports, mini-DisplayPort and HDMI flanking the left, followed by audio jacks, another USB, Ethernet and power along the right. Looks like thin and lights are about to get a whole lot more interesting later in the year, which, frankly is great — it’s about time Chipzilla got some worthy competition.

Update: Tech From 10 seems to be offline — but we have lots of images and a hands-on review if you want to see what the new Music app is like.

In what is probably a bit of a big-G whoopsie, the folks at Tech From 10 woke up to find a new, test version of Android Market installed on their Galaxy S.

Visually, the new version is almost identical. The carousel of featured apps has been updated slightly, and apps now have a ‘Content rating,’ but that’s it (image after the break). The interesting bit, however, is the inclusion of alpha and beta apps — most notably, there’s a new version of the Music app, which looks like a scaled-down version of the Android 3.0 Honeycomb Music app (see right).

Also available from the test Android Market is ‘Google Gallery 3D New 10.2′, ‘Google – Camera v12′ and ‘Google Desk Clock 10′ — but, curiously, all of the apps refused to launch on Tech From 10′s Galaxy S (Vibrant) smartphone. Are they Honeycomb apps? Or, more likely, are they destined for the next Android smartphone OS, Ice Cream?

If you want to try out the new Honeycombish Music app, Tech From 10 has made the APK available for download. You can also download the three Google apps, if you want to have a poke around.

I’m getting fat; that’s what you see on the screenshot to the right — my gradual move from chubby to portly. But never mind the numbers, look at the pretty graph!

If you’ve ever read The Hacker’s Diet, this graph should be instantly recognizable. Each point shows the weight for a given day, while the trend line lets you see if you’re gaining or losing weight.

When I use my “main” PC, I have a homebrew solution for creating and maintaining this graph. But I’ve had to find a temporary solution for Android, and Libra is it.

It’s a beautifully simple app, very true to the spirit of The Hacker’s Diet. You can create a shortcut on your homescreen that brings you right into the data entry screen, so you just tap the shortcut every morning, feed in your weight for the day and hit OK, and then you get to see your progress (or lack thereof) on the graph.

The app remembers the previous day’s weigh-in, which makes it easy to enter today’s weight (as they’re usually not too different). The graph is zoomable and scrollable, and most importantly, you can export the data to CSV so you’re not locked into the app.

If you ever need to track your weight using an Android device for any period of time, Libra is one excellent solution.

The thing about the American civil court system is you can almost never stop looking over your shoulder, even when you thought you won. Things get appealed and what was a favorable ruling can become your worst nightmare five years later. That’s what the folks at Kaleidescape are facing if the latest tentative judgement in its case vs the DVD Copy Control Association, which licenses DVD’s defunct copy protection, CSS. Last time around Kaleidescape was on the other side of the ruling with the Judge agreeing that there was no violation of any terms of service. This time around? Not so much. It would mean a shift in legal DVD servers, but we’d imagine Blu-ray takes up most of the market by now anyway. Currently Kaleidescape’s Blu-ray products authenticate the disc is in the vault before playing, and its CEO has testified modifications could be made to the DVD products within a few months. So with Managed Copy being DOA and UltraViolet being anything but disappointing to anyone, days without keeping track of discs to watch the movies you own seems like a fairy tale — legally anyways.

Label boss Jimmy Iovine calls criticism ‘a drag.’
By Gil Kaufman

Lana Del Rey
Photo: MTV News

To look at her, you’d think Lana Del Rey’s inspirations come mostly from 1940s detective movies and sepia-toned Hollywood pinups. But the “Video Games” singer told England’s Magic 105.4 that one of her big fashion and music icons is Britney Spears.

“I’m not really interested in a ton of female musicians but there is something about Britney that compelled me — the way she sings and just the way she looks,” Del Rey said. And even though she’s just released her major-label debut under the Del Rey name, she added that she’s already kind of over music-making.

“The thing that makes me happy now isn’t really singing,” she said. “Music was once the be-all and end-all, but when you lose everything you have over and over again, it’s not so important.”

It might be a bit early for her to bail on the whole music thing though, since her album, Born to Die, topped the iTunes album charts in 14 countries this week, including the U.S., U.K., Italy, France, Germany, Ireland and Mexico.

The chart triumph — and a possible #2 debut next week on the Billboard albums tally — came despite a rash of negative or middling reviews
of the album as well as the continuing fallout from her shaky “Saturday Night Live”
 debut last month.

The haterade has gotten her label boss, Interscope’s Jimmy Iovine, to chime in on the flack his latest protégé has been taking. “It’s a drag,” Iovine told The Hollywood Reporter. “Maybe this is a new sport. It’s something we’ve never seen before. Or maybe it’s [like] the Giants and the Jets.” Del Rey herself told Rolling Stone that she thought she looked “beautiful” and sang “fine” on the show, saying that “that’s just the way I perform, and my fans know that.”

Say what you want about Del Rey’s looks, attitude and performance ability, but Iovine said there is one thing you can’t mess with.

Musically, he thinks Die is “really good. Great lyrics and great songs. I don’t care what anybody says, ‘Video Games’ is a great song. When she sings that song, it moves me. It’s how we signed her — she sang and it was beautiful. I think she’s really talented. Period.”

Oh Amazon, why must you tease us so? Not content on leaking the Fujifilm X-Pro1′s lenses before the mirrorless ILC was even announced at CES, the retailer just confirmed the camera’s price. It appears you’ll have to plunk down a hefty $1700 to get your dirty little mitts on this high-end rangefinder-ish 16 megapixel APS-C shooter — and that’s just for the body. As a reminder, you’ll also be able to purchase the 18mm (27mm equivalent) f/2.0 and 35mm (53mm equivalent) f/1.4 lenses for $500 each, and the larger 60mm (91mm equivalent) f/2.4 macro lens for $600. This camera may not be quite a sexy looking as its fixed-lens cousin the X100, but it sure looks more than up to the task of taking beautiful pictures. Guess we’ll have to wait until late February to find out for sure.

For the first time in any presentation he had ever given, he ended with a slide reading, “Oh, and one more thing…” This phrase would of course enter the Apple lexicon in the subsequent years. But what was it that was hidden behind this first “one more thing”? “Think Profit.” You see, Jobs had just been named interim CEO in September 1997 after successfully pushing out the man who brought him (back) in, Gil Amelio. And he had good reason to do that: under Amelio, Apple had lost $1.04 billion in the prior year and was less than ninety days from being completely broke. Just a few months later, as he announced on stage, Jobs had the company back in black: a $45 million profit ? the first profit the company had seen in more than two years.

The bookseller let it be known this week that it will be pulling Amazon Publishing titles from the shelves of its 700-odd retail locations, in protest of exclusivity deals struck by the mega-online retailer. As one B&N exec told The New York Times, “Our decision is based on Amazon’s continued push for exclusivity with publishers, agents and the authors they represent,” adding, “Their actions have undermined the industry as a whole and have prevented millions of customers from having access to content.” Barnes & Noble will apparently continue to sell some Amazon titles through its own site, but good luck using its WiFi.

This number includes smartphone apps, like those for the Android and iPhone, but also apps that run on BlackBerry, Nokia, and feature phones. At the time, that number equated to roughly 40% of the company’s overall user base. Facebook hadn’t revealed an official number for monthly active users on mobile since September, however, which was then at 350 million users for both mobile apps and mobile web combined. Today, thanks the Facebook IPO filing, we have an update to the official numbers: there are now 425 mobile monthly active users as of December 2011, out of Facebook’s total 825 million users.

It sure is nice to see some new developer action over at Flickr. The relatively slow-moving photo-sharing service has just announced a new sharing update, which consists of several new and easy ways to embed or link to your photos:

Share from Photo page: There’s a new sharing option on each and every photo page. When logged off, the button shows only Facebook and Twitter options. But once you log on, you get Tumblr and Blogger too, and can configure other sharing venues as well.

Share non-public content on Facebook: This doesn’t sound like a great idea, but you now can share private photos on Facebook if you’re so inclined (and if you trust your privacy settings).

That’s the gist of the update; it makes it easier to show off your pretty pictures in a plethora of places.

Competition is a good thing, and the browser arena has been a fierce arena for years now. There are at least four “major” browsers each vying for your attention, along with lots of smaller spin-offs (SRWare Iron or Flock, anyone?).

While the browser usage charts we share from time to time show overall browser usage amongst the Web at large, Download Squad readers are not exactly the average bunch in terms of browser use. So today we have one simple question for you:

What’s your primary Web browser?

This is one of Rodrigo Alonso’s stools. It’s part of a series of furniture called N+ew, which stands for “No More Electronic Waste,” the Chilean artist felt the best way to dispose of electronic gadgetry that had fallen by the wayside, was to encase it in epoxy resin and sell it to aesthetes worldwide. As you can see, the collection has a rare, distinct beauty that recalls Mies van der Rohe’s Barcelona chair and Arne Jacobsen’s No. 7 seat. If you find yourself unable to resist a purchase, bespoke editions can be ordered from the sculptor’s website as the perfect conversation starter — as long as you enjoy every conversation beginning with “What on earth possessed you to buy one of those things?”

This time, it’s no other than the HTC <strike>Edge</strike> Ville, that rumored divergent mix of quad-core processing bulk and slimline form-factor: something we don’t typically see the unibody-armored HTC family. In the leaked video, you’ll be getting a look at a heavily disguised version of Ice Cream Sandwich, covered in contentious (but new!) Sense sauce. The mysterious handset mole is also kind enough to pay a visit to the phone’s specification list, confirming, at least if this is the finished article, an eight megapixel camera, 4.3-inch qHD display and a 1.5GHz dual-core processor. Alas, it looks like this isn’t going to be the rumored quad-core debut from the Taiwanese phone maker, although going on past form, it won’t shock us if the company reveals a whole line-up of handsets for us to meddle with next month. Take the tour yourself — it’s right after the break.

Update: Looks like the original video has been unceremoniously switched to private. Fortunately, we managed to grab a copy beforehand.

The news coming out of Research In Motion just keeps on flowing. We're just over a week into the reign of new CEO Thorsten Heins, and the latest is this new image of the BlackBerry London secured by our cousins over at Crackberry. For those that aren't familiar with the going's on over in the BlackBerry camp, BB10 is the next generation QNX based OS that is supposed to herald a whole new era for the platform. The BlackBerry London is thought to be the first BB10 smartphone.

In his first interview with Crackberry, Heins brought a lot of insight with him. He also, you may recall, gave them his thoughts on Android hardware and how it "all looks the same." Forgive us for saying this, but the London kind of looks <strike>a bit </strike>a lot like an Android smartphone. Droid X, anyone? It'll probably run Android applications as well, via the Runtime for Android Applications feature found in the forthcoming Playbook OS 2.0.

The first leaked images of the London were vastly different to this. With its angled corners, and the kind of brushed metal finish found on the ultra-expensive Porsche Design P'9981, that sure did look different. Different to anything RIM had ever put out, and definitely different to anything in the Android war chest.

Crackberry Kevin thinks the London looks like a trimmed down version of a Blackberry Playbook. As a Playbook owner, I definitely see a resemblance. It's a little disappointing though if this is what the finished hardware will look like. Android does have an awful lot of black slabs, just as BlackBerry have an awful lot of QWERTY devices

In a bid to keep iPhones sold in Hong Kong on the island nation, Apple has reintroduced reserve and pick up pages for the smartphones. The difference this time around is the inclusion of the customer’s Hong Kong identity card number within the registration form, which goes live between 9am and 12pm each day. The aim is put breaks on the speculative smartphone buyers picking up several devices to mule across to mainland China. You’ll still need a bit of luck; Apple performs a random draw each day for those that registered, and ‘winners’ are informed via email. Each card can apparently buy a limited quantity of the in-demand phone — one that’s getting some smartphone obsessives a little too hot under the collar.
