Apple’s iBooks 2 e-textbooks pack tons of info, take up tons of your iPad’s memory

Apple just got done unveiling its new iBooks 2 platform, letting us in on its plan to revamp education (in part) through its fancy new e-textbooks. These digital volumes look beautiful and come at a relatively meager monetary cost ($14.99), but a quick perusal of the textbooks available in iTunes reveals they’ll take a sizable chunk of your iPad’s memory. The current lineup of eight texts range in size from 800MB to 2.77GB, so folks looking to grab a full semester’s worth of materials may have to carry an extra iPad or three to get the job done. Not an ideal solution, but a few Apple slates are still easier to schlep across campus than those massive texts you’re used to, right?

‘American Idol’: David Leathers Jr., Phillip Phillips Wow

Gabi Carrubba, Shannon Magrane and Amy Brumfield also stand out during Savannah, Georgia, auditions.
By Adam Graham

“American Idol” kicked off its 11th season Wednesday (January 18) with auditions in Savannah, Georgia, and Steven Tyler, Randy Jackson and Jennifer Lopez were in a very giving mood when it came to handing out Golden Tickets.

In all, 42 singers were given the green light to Hollywood, as the show placed an overwhelming emphasis on true competitors rather than gag auditions. The mood of the show was sunny and positive, a far cry from the days of Simon Cowell, when acid-tongued barbs were the order of the day.

The evening started with David Leathers Jr., a wayfarer-clad 17-year-old who claimed his nickname among his friends is “Mr. Steal Your Girl.” But his most defining characteristic was bluntly pointed out by Lopez: “You look like you’re 12,” she told the singer. However, the Fayetteville, North Carolina, resident impressed the judges with his version of 21st Century’s “Remember the Rain” and later with Michael Jackson’s “Never Can Say Goodbye.” “Nice, nice, that’s beautiful,” Tyler told him, while Jackson followed up with, “Dude, we love you, man. You’re through to Hollywood.” Whether he looks 12 or not, you’ll be seeing more of him in the future.

Despite her visible nerves, Gabi Carrubba, a 16-year-old tap dancer from North Haven, Connecticut, wowed the judges with her version of Maroon 5′s “Sunday Morning.” Lopez compared her voice control to that of Luther Vandross, and Tyler told her she “nailed” the audition. “You were born to do this!” Jackson beamed, sending her through to the Hollywood round.

Shannon Magrane, daughter of former St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Joe Magrane, graduated to Hollywood on the strength of her version of Etta James’ “Something’s Got a Hold on Me,” which is sampled in both Avicii’s “Levels” and Flo Rida’s “Good Feeling.” She was complimented for her “nerves of steel” by Jackson, and her father should have been complimented on his patience after not jumping Tyler when he called the 15-year-old “hot, humid and happening.” It was the most awkward moment in an otherwise smooth show.

The season got its first good backstory out of Amy Brumfield, a 24-year-old who lives in a tent “way out in the middle of the woods” in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. She spoke of her struggles and inability to afford a “$100-a-week hotel room,” thus her humble tent. But she’s content: “I’d rather be outdoors and happy than indoors and miserable,” Brumfield explained. And when she sang Alicia Keys’ “Superwoman,” she was immediately sent off to Hollywood. “So positively yes,” Tyler told her. “Out of a tent and into Hollywood — what a story!”

Perhaps the evening’s most memorable contestant, or at least the one with the most instant name recognition, was 20-year-old Phillip Phillips of Leesburg, Georgia. The Southern singer was so physically expressive that Lopez commented, “It’s like you have electricity going through your body or something!” He punched up not only a raw, emotional version of Stevie Wonder’s “Superstition,” but also a Southern-fried, front-porch rendition of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” that would have ripped the screen door off the audition room, if there was one to be ripped off. Phillip Phillips: Remember that name. As if you can forget it.

Other singers given the go-ahead to Hollywood on Wednesday’s show included Ashlee Altise, a 28-year-old from Kinston, North Carolina, who sang the Beatles’ “Come Together” and is apt to express herself through “joy dancing”; W.T. Thompson, a 25-year-old former prison worker from tiny Appomattox, Virginia, who quit his job in order to audition and won two out of three “yes” votes with his version of Little Big Town’s “Boondocks”; NBA dancer Brittany Kerr, a 24-year-old from Charlotte, North Carolina, who sang Joss Stone’s “Spoiled” and whose stunning good looks had Jackson and Tyler’s attention long before she ever sang a note; Schyler and Colton Dixon, two siblings from Murfreesboro, Tennessee, who both tried out last year and were denied but made it through this time; Lauren Mink, a 25-year-old from Winchester, Kentucky, whose version of Gwyneth Paltrow’s “Country Strong” gave Lopez “goosies!”; Stephanie Renae, a 15-year-old from Orange Park, Florida, who got two out of three “yes” votes for her version of Carrie Underwood’s “Inside Your Heaven”; 15-year-old Brianna Faulk of Monroe, Georgia, who passed through on the strength of her version of Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance With Somebody”; 20-year-old Atlanta resident Neco Starr, who sang Bruno Mars’ “Grenade”; 28-year-old vocal coach Elise Testone, who was dubbed a “spitfire” by Lopez for her take on Janis Joplin’s “Get It While You Can”; and Franklin, Tennessee, 15-year-old Molly Hunt.

The news wasn’t as good for 26-year-old Shaun Kraisman of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, whose take on the Chi-Lites’ “Oh Girl” did not earn him a pass to Hollywood. But given that he was able to showcase his dead-on impression of Ryan Seacrest, he may be the one singer on Wednesday’s show who is almost guaranteed an appearance on this year’s “Idol” finale.

Virgin Media suffers three hour outage days after announcing super-fast broadband

Less than a week after announcing it would double customers broadband speeds nationwide, Virgin Media suffered a nationwide blackout that sent the network dark for most of Tuesday evening. At 5:00, the service dropped after router hardware decided it couldn’t go on streaming the same episode of The Jeremy Kyle Show to the nation. The company admitted to the fault and service was restored by 8:00pm. Had it been smarter, it could have gotten away with passing the whole thing off as a SOPA protest, but we admire Virgin’s honesty — even if it did lead to the brilliant comment on Twitter pictured above.

3DS eShop to get free game demos, Nintendo throws users DLC bone

Never let it be said that good things don’t come to those who wait and wait and… well, you get the point. Having finally delivered a much-delayed firmware update to the 3DS last December, the Big N appears ready to make good on its DLC promises. Starting tomorrow, gamers visiting the eShop will be able to take a tour of Racoon City and fire off a few shots at its zombie denizens with a downloadable demo of Resident Evil Revelations. The company’s only announced one other title, Mario & Sonic At The London Olympic Games, for later this month, but plans are on deck to refresh the service with new trial content from Rayman Origins and Metal Gear Solid Snake Eater 3D, amongst others in the coming year. Sure, it’s no Kid Icarus, but this is Nintendo we’re talking about — you have to take what you can get.

Way-Go flashlight uses lasers to light your path, GPS to tell you where to go

We love just about anything involving lasers or robotics here at Engadget, so naturally, we’re intrigued by Sriranjan Rasakatla’s Way-Go flashlight that combines the two. It’s comprised of a laser pico projector, GPS module, altitude and heading reference system (AHRS) to not only light your path but also tell you which way to go. It can be used strictly as a flashlight, but users can also input starting and destination points to have the Way-Go guide them. There’s also a wander mode that displays info about your surroundings as you stroll around — though naturally, such information must be pre-programmed into the device. Because it displays stuff that needs reading, the projector’s connected to servos that can keep it locked on a projection point to keep it readable no matter how much you move the Way-Go around. Rasakatla sees the device being useful in search and rescue, backcountry trekking, and campus tour guiding — odd, ’cause in our day, kids walking around campus at night were trying to find out where the party was at, not learn about the architecture of the academic buildings. Regardless, you can see the Way-Go in action after the break.

Chrome 11 beta adds new experimental APIs for proxies, Web navigation

google chrome 11 proxy
Google Chrome 11 — which just recently made the move to the browser’s beta channel — has received a minor update that gives developers access to two new APIs.

The first is a full-featured proxy API, which will, for example, allow users to set different proxy servers for normal browsing and Incognito mode. Proxy auto-config scripts are also supported by the API.

The second — Web Navigation Extension — is a bit more expansive. This API will allow devs to build everything from more powerful safe browsing extensions — like Traffic Light — to data analysis and reporting extensions.

Both APIs are currently experimental, so you’ll need to enable them on the about:flags page to try out any relevant extensions. Apart from a proxy example built by Google and shipped with the Chromium source, we’re not aware of any examples just yet, however. We’ll let you know when we spot any slick, new extensions which do surface.

Screen Grabs chronicles the uses (and misuses) of real-world gadgets in today’s movies and TV. Send in your sightings (with screen grab!) to screengrabs at engadget dot com.

We’d be lying if we said we were frenemies with Gossip Girl’s goings-on (one of them’s in the Pretty Reckless, right?). Fom the picture above, it looks like Serena van der Woodsen’s shipping magnate father must have lifted this HP Envy 14 Spectre off the back of one of his shipments, given that the glass-built Ultrabook doesn’t arrive in stores until February 8th. It wouldn’t be the first time the show’s squeezed in some unrealistic product placement: there was the time Serena had a SIM-card packing Verizon Droid X, or when someone had actually bought a Kin.

Pastebin updated to V3, releases Windows app

pastebin

Pastebin is a very popular website aimed at coders and other nerdy types, which allows them (or should I say, us) to paste and share snippets of code with lovely syntax highlighting.

It has recently undergone a major overhaul which includes the release of a brand new Windows client. The new client lets you create new “pastes” and manage your existing ones. It joins a host of other tools from Pastebin, such as the Google and Chrome extensions, OS X widget and the mobile apps.

If you’re currently using Pastebin, the new client is a great addition. And if you haven’t tried it before, next time you have a piece of code you want to share or get some feedback on, you could do worse than try out Pastebin.

[Thanks, Jeroen!]

Over 500 million Chinese citizens now connected to the web

The number of internet-connected Chinese citizens jumped 4 percent in 2012, pushing the country’s total number of users over the 500 million mark. A report issued by the state-owned China Internet Network Information Center (CINIC) reveals that over 37% (513 million people) living in The Middle Kingdom are now traversing the information superhighway. Unsurprisingly, the majority of these internet connections (close to 70%) can be attributed to mobile phones; as we’ve seen over the past few days, this mobile-centric user-base has generated very high demand for certain cellular products. Those scrutinizing the CINIC’s report note that the statistics quoted by the Chinese government could be a wee bit on the high side. The report considers a user “internet connected” if they are over the age of six and have been online in the past half year. Hit the source link for more surfing stats from the Far East.

Jon Huntsman Drops Out Of Presidential Race

Former Obama ambassador failed to pick up momentum in race.
By Gil Kaufman

John Huntsman speaks during the 2012 New Hampshire primary
Photo: Getty Images

After a series of disappointing finishes and a failure to emerge from the pack, former Utah governor Jon Huntsman announced his withdrawal from the 2012 presidential race on Monday (January 16). Huntsman threw his support behind leading candidate Mitt Romney in a bid to unite a Republican party that is sorely divided over which candidate will take on President Obama in November.

“Our campaign for the presidency ends, but our campaign for a (better) American continues,” Huntsman said during an official announcement in South Carolina during which he made a plea to the remaining candidates to stop launching attack ads on each other because “the current toxic form of our political discourse does not help our cause.”

Huntsman served as ambassador to China in the Obama administration and was the sole voice of moderation amid a pack of White House contenders that have done their utmost to highlight their conservative bona fides. After skipping campaigning in Iowa
to focus all his energies on last week’s New Hampshire primary, he came in a distant third to Romney and Ron Paul.

And though he put on a brave face and said his #3 finish in New Hampshire was a “ticket to ride” to the next contest in South Carolina on January 21, the reality of his anemic support base appears to have become clear to the man whose bid was launched on the promise of bringing civility back to the process. Almost from the start, Huntsman was unable to win over a Republican voting base that looked at his service in the current Democrat administration with scorn and blanched at his support on some social issues, including civil unions for gay couples.

In a campaign that struggled to pull polling numbers out of the single digits for most of the past year, one of the bright spots for Huntsman was the media embrace of his music-loving daughters’
social-networking prowess. Sisters Mary Anne, 26, Abby, 25, and Liddy, 24, helped focus some attention on their dad’s often-overlooked campaign with their irreverent viral videos and tweets..

Speaking to MTV’s Power of 12 last week in New Hampshire, the Huntsman trio said the grueling campaign was a “family affair”
that they were really enjoying. “We call it a roller coaster: You never know which way the car is going to go,” said Abby on the eve of the Granite State contest when it looked like her dad’s poll numbers were finally inching up into the solid double digits.

“We think [social media] is crucially important for this election cycle, especially for our younger generation, so we’ve kind of run with it,” added Liddy, referring to such now-infamous bits as a YouTube send-up of former candidate Herman Cain’s “smoking” commercial and a Justin Timberlake remake promoting their dad. Despite his pledge to endorse Romney, just last week Huntsman referred to the former Massachusetts governor as “unelectable.”

With Huntsman — who, like Romney, was vying to be the nation’s first Mormon president — out of the race, leading candidate Romney is now facing off against Paul, former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum, former House speaker Newt Gingrich and Texas Governor Rick Perry.

Stick with PowerOf12.org throughout the presidential election season.

GNOME 3 released, ushers in an interesting amalgam of iOS and OS X

GNOME 3 desktop manager

GNOME 3, after more than two years of development, has been released into the wild. GNOME 3 is not merely the logical successor of GNOME 2: it is an entirely new project, started from scratch, to create a “completely new, modern desktop designed for today’s users and technologies.”

The best way to check out GNOME 3′s new features — and it has lots of new features — is to run a live version of openSUSE or Fedora, or simply head over to the GNOME 3 website and watch the (rather pretty) introductory videos. If you want a synopsis, though, here it is: GNOME 3 looks a lot like Mac OS X, with a healthy dollop of iOSesqueness for good measure, but yet it still somehow retains an underlying feel of Linux.

The overall aesthetic is very simple, very elegant, and despite being slightly out of fashion, there are plenty of rounded corners, too. The main addition, workflow-wise, is the addition of an app-launcher-cum-alt-tab screen, where you can launch apps, or flip through your open windows. For a complete list of the new features and changes, check the GNOME 3 release notes.

Despite GNOME 3 being officially launched, there aren’t actually any releases for existing, stable Linux distros — it’s the live CD/USB images, or Ubuntu users will have to wait for the launch of 11.04 for a GNOME 3 PPA, but it will break Unity in the process. Fedora users will have to wait for for the May 24 release of Fedora 15. Of course, if you’re feeling crazy, you can always build GNOME 3 from source.

We just received official word from a Verizon spokesperson that effective today, the carrier will no longer allow you to bring over an Alltel device to a retail outlet and get it activated on their network. If you’re currently using an Alltel-branded phone on Verizon, don’t panic: this new policy change only applies to handsets that haven’t already been activated. We can’t imagine this will affect too many users at this point, but we imagine Chad’s still feeling a little bummed out today regardless. Continue on below for Verizon’s statement.

Mitoza is a fun, freaky Web toy with an artistic look

mitoza

While not a game per se, I found Mitoza intriguing enough to spend quite some time with it. You start off with a seed, and are then presented with two choices: you can either click a flower pot, or click a cute little birdie.

If you click the flower pot, a flower pot appears and the seed is planted inside. You’re then presented with two further choices — a water can or a bottle of fertilizer. Each choice you make causes your creation to morph, and presents you with two other choices.

There’s no winning or losing, really. Each “game” usually lasts around four or five choices, at which point the plant/animal dies in some creative (but not too gruesome) way. At this point you instantly start over with a new seed.

The graphics are captivating; the whole thing has a cinematic feel to it, with a bit of artificial camera shake added for style.

All in all, it’s a fun, peaceful way to spend a few minutes, and it might even make you think a little bit while you’re at it.

Flickr adds to sharing options, now easier to share photos across the Web

flickr

It sure is nice to see some new developer action over at Flickr. The relatively slow-moving photo-sharing service has just announced a new sharing update, which consists of several new and easy ways to embed or link to your photos:

  • Share from Photo page: There’s a new sharing option on each and every photo page. When logged off, the button shows only Facebook and Twitter options. But once you log on, you get Tumblr and Blogger too, and can configure other sharing venues as well.
  • Share non-public content on Facebook: This doesn’t sound like a great idea, but you now can share private photos on Facebook if you’re so inclined (and if you trust your privacy settings).

That’s the gist of the update; it makes it easier to show off your pretty pictures in a plethora of places.

Firefox 4 rockets to 5% global usage share, IE9 wallows at 1.5%

Firefox 4 usage share graph

Using some early numbers from both StatCounter and Net Applications, Mozilla’s noisiest hominid, Asa Dotzler, has illustrated Firefox 4′s meteoric rise to around 5% of Web browser global usage share. Internet Explorer 9, which launched two weeks ago, seems to be enjoying a much more casual stroll in the park with just 1.5% of the global Web usage share.

Interestingly, we can see IE9 dipping between March 20 and 21, just before the ‘Important’ Windows Update rolled out. It’s hard to say whether IE9 is only growing because of the installed-by-default Windows Update, but that small dip definitely sticks out — did excitement peter out? Did people download IE9, try it out, and summarily uninstall it? Perhaps, given their close proximity, the stats show an attention shift from Microsoft to Mozilla?

Numbers-wise, if the bottom left corner of the graph shows 2.3 million downloads for IE9, we can guesstimate that that it has now been downloaded 5 million times. Firefox is clocking in at 37 million downloads after five days of public availability.

We wonder whether Microsoft knew its release schedule would coincide so closely with Firefox 4. Internet Explorer 9 — a great browser by almost every metric — was never going to do well against anything emanating from the maws of Mozilla. The main thing, though, is that Microsoft has now shown that it’s serious when it comes to the Open Web. If Internet Explorer 10 is good, and 11 and 12, then we might finally see it compete with the zealous Mozillan horde.

Let it Slide is an engaging, difficult puzzle game

letitslide

I have a thing for physics games, and I’ve been known to post the occasional platformer or action game here and there. But Let it Slide is one of the brainiest games I’ve posted to date.

The idea is very simple, and far from original: You get a board with pieces arranged in a particular pattern; you have to slide those around until you get the special piece into its target location.

It’s not even about finding out where the target location is – you can just hover over “dim tiles” and instantly see where you’re supposed to bring the special piece. But getting it there is a whole different story.

There are five tutorial levels, which I strongly recommend you do. Then there are twenty “beginner” levels, but that’s really a misnomer. If those are the beginner levels, I don’t want to know what the intermediate and advanced levels look like!

Every time you finish a level you get a score based on how many clicks it took you – each level has a “par” (the minimum number of clicks it could be completed in), and your performance is compared to that gold standard. Because it’s such a brainy game, getting it right is quite satisfying. I was downright proud of myself when I managed to finish a few levels. All in all, quite recommended, especially if you’ve got a few minutes of quiet. It might actually help you focus better later on.

Golden Globes Led By George Clooney, ‘The Artist’

Host Ricky Gervais returns, as ‘Modern Family,’ Michelle Williams and Meryl Streep also take home statues on Sunday night.
By Ryan J. Downey

On Sunday night (January 15), George Clooney and “The Artist” continued their awards-season domination while Ricky Gervais giddily piled on the humiliation as the 69th annual Golden Globes went down in Hollywood.

The returning host kept his most pointed barbs confined to the monologue, while the Hollywood Foreign Press Association spread the love a bit more evenly than some predicted, with Globes for stars like Meryl Streep and Michelle Williams. Expected winners also took home statues, with Clooney nabbing Best Actor and “The Artist” winning Best Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical; the actor and film, like Best Supporting Actor Christopher Plummer and Best Supporting Actress Octavia Spencer have been cleaning up this month.

“Cheers. So, where was I?” Gervais began, in an appropriately devilish red suit.

The awards show itself was the comedian’s first major target (“the Golden Globes are to the Oscars what Kim Kardashian is to Kate Middleton”), followed by the Oscars (“when the man who said ‘yes’ to ‘Norbit,’ says ‘no’ to you, you know you’re in trouble”), the HFPA, Jodie Foster (Elton John looked unimpressed), Kim Kardashian (“I’ve sat through longer James Cameron acceptance speeches than [her marriage]“), Justin Bieber (“the only way that he could have impregnated a girl is if he borrowed one of Martha Stewart’s old turkey basters”) and more.

Gervais introduced the first presenter of the night, Johnny Depp, with a plug for his own forthcoming HBO series, “Life’s Too Short,” which in one episode’s fit of “meta” casting features Depp as himself grilling Gervais about last year’s Golden Globes. Depp sipped from Gervais’ glass of beer before the comedian asked him if he’d seen “The Tourist” yet. “No,” Depp responded, as he stifled a laugh. (Depp went on to introduce a short clip about Martin Scorsese’s 3-D picture “Hugo,” which was nominated for Best Motion Picture – Drama.)

Gerard Butler and Mila Kunis presented the award for Best Supporting Actor to Plummer for his role as a gay man who comes out late in life in “Beginners.”

“What a wonderful welcome back to the home of King Kong, Rin-Tin Tin and all our youthful fantasies,” the 82-year-old screen legend said. “I must praise my distinguished competitors for whom I have the greatest admiration and to whom I apologize most profusely. And I want to salute my partner, Ewan, that wily Scot; Ewan ‘My Heart’s in the Highlands’ McGregor.” His last bit of thanks was reserved for his wife of 43 years, Elaine. “[Her] bravery and beauty haunts me still.”

“Two and a Half Men” star Ashton Kutcher and supermodel Elle Macpherson were up next to present Best Actress in a TV Series – Comedy or Musical. The Globe went to Laura Dern for “Enlightened,” marking her third win overall at the event.

Teleprompter problems plagued Rob Lowe and Julianne Moore as they introduced this year’s Miss Golden Globe (Rainey Qualley, daughter of actress Andy MacDowell). The pair went on to present the award for Best Mini-Series or TV Movie to “Downton Abbey.” Fans of the hit PBS series include Patton Oswalt, who once tweeted that the show is “Star Trek for tea drinkers!”

“We’re already five minutes over,” Gervais chided when he returned to the stage, digging into overly long acceptance speeches. “You don’t need to thank everyone you’ve ever met … just do the main two, your agent and God.” The self-described atheist added that both had an “equal amount” of input into his career. From there, he brought up the scene in “Bridesmaids” where Melissa McCarthy’s character moves her bowels in a sink. “Amazingly, that’s still less demeaning than what most of you have done to make it in show business,” he told the audience.

McCarthy and Paula Patton gave the Best Actor in a Comedy Series Globe to Kelsey Grammer for “Boss” (prompting viewers like @mindykaling to reminisce about the actor’s semi-legendary fall from a stage) and Best TV Series – Drama to “Homeland.”

Jimmy Fallon broke out his Mick Jagger moves before presenting the award for Best Song and Best Score with Maroon Five’s Adam Levine to “The Artist” composer Ludovic Bource. Madonna and Elton John had earlier engaged in some red-carpet cattiness about the Best Original Song – Motion Picture category, in which they were both nominated. Ultimately, it was Madge who triumphed: Her win for the song she wrote for directorial effort “W.E.” followed a previous Golden Globe for her starring performance in 1996′s “Evita.”

Seth Rogen and a typically stunning Kate Beckinsale soon followed. “Hello, I’m Seth Rogen, and I am currently trying to conceal a massive erection,” he said, which kept Beckinsale laughing as they introduced the nominees for Best Actress in a Comedy.

Michelle Williams won for “My Week with Marilyn,” a film Rogen dryly called a “hysterical comedy” (the movie is arguably more of a drama, despite its categorization). “I consider myself a mother first and an actress second, so the person that I most want to thank is my daughter,” Williams said, speaking about Matilda Rose, her child with late actor Heath Ledger. She also thanked the HFPA “for putting in my hands this same award that Marilyn Monroe herself won over 50 years ago. Thank you, I’m honored.”

Sarah Michelle Gellar and Piper Parabo presented Best Supporting Actor in a TV Series, Mini-Series or TV Movie to Peter Dinklage for “Game of Thrones.”

“I was talking to my mother in Jersey before I came out and she said, ‘Have fun but, ‘Have you seen Mildred Pierce? Guy Pearce is so good, he’s going to win!’. … I just love our moms, ’cause they keep us humble,” Dinklage said. He then drew attention to the story of Martin Henderson, a dwarf who suffered a serious injury reportedly inspired by a cruel “dwarf-tossing” competition.

Ricky’s punch line when he introduced Madonna was little more than a well-placed clearing of his throat, which followed this: “Our next presenter is the Queen of Pop — not you, Elton, sit down. She’s all woman. I’ll give you some clues: She’s always vogue. She’s a material girl. And she’s just like a virgin … ahem.” The Queen of Pop was ready with a quick retort: “If I’m still just like a virgin, then why don’t you come over here and do something about it?” she challenged. “I haven’t kissed a girl in a few years — on TV.”

“Seriously nuts… Seriously,” Spencer said after Bradley Cooper introduced Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture. “The Help” star has been stacking up awards this month for her part in the breakout hit. “With regard to domestics in this country, now and then I think Dr. King said it best: ‘All labor that uplifts humanity has dignity and importance.’ ” She then sped through her thank-you’s in a comedic nod to the show’s habit of playing off winners mid-speech. “Table 10, thank you again!” she concluded.

Reese Witherspoon introduced “The Descendants,” which she noted was directed by “my friend, Alexander Payne,” with whom she made the classic dark comedy, “Election.” Later in the show, Robert Downey Jr. introduced the film “The Artist.”

Morgan Freeman is only the second African American actor to receive the prestigious Cecil B. DeMille Award; he accepted it 30 years after Sidney Poitier was similarly honored in 1982. The 84-year-old Poitier received a standing ovation when he came out to introduce Freeman. “In my humble opinion, sir, you are indeed a prince in the profession you have chosen. We thank you, Mr. Freeman, for raising the level of excellence yet another notch. Welcome aboard, Morgan Freeman,” he said. The 74-year-old Freeman was honored for a career that includes iconic roles in movies like “Driving Miss Daisy,” “Glory,” “The Shawshank Redemption” and “Million Dollar Baby.”

Angelina Jolie gave Martin Scorsese Best Director – Motion Picture for “Hugo.” “Sit down, sit down, everybody!” he commanded. He thanked the HFPA for all of the work they do to help ensure the preservation and restoration of cinema, which tied directly into “Hugo.”

Gervais joked about Salma Hayek and Antonio Banderas’ accents when he introduced them, prompting a long, non-English response from Banderas. “Ricky, I don’t understand [Banderas] either,” Hayek teased. The pair gave the Golden Globe for Best Television Series – Comedy or Musical to “Modern Family,” with Columbian castmember Sofia Vergara accepting with a short speech in Spanish that one of the show’s producers comically mistranslated.

Michelle Pfeiffer introduced Steven Spielberg’s “War Horse.” Presenters Jessica Biel and Mark Wahlberg were up next. Wahlberg complimented Biel’s pronunciation of Jean Dujardin (Best Actor winner for Motion Picture, Comedy or Musical), before Queen Latifah introduced “The Help.” Then Gervais was back onstage. “Nearly there, nearly there,” he said at the two-and-a-half-hour mark.

“Our next presenter is British, like me. But unlike me, he’s won an Oscar, for his brilliant portrayal in ‘The King’s Speech.’ He’s also swooned over by women,” Gervais went on, also noting Colin Firth’s high profile with critics. “What you don’t know about him is he’s very racist. I’ve also seen him punch a little blind kitten. Please welcome the evil Colin Firth!”

Firth pretended to kick Gervais when he came out, but the actor was smiling. “As I was on my way in, I noticed some very angry religious people outside threatening us all with brimstone … for our sins. … What they don’t realize is we have Ricky.”

“When Ricky Gervais’ deal fell through and they came to me to play Margret Thatcher,” Meryl Streep began as she accepted Best Actress, Motion Picture for “The Iron Lady.” Clooney helped pass her glasses to the stage so she could better read her speech, but she stayed off her notes and offered heartfelt appreciation for all of the women nominated in the category alongside her. “I just want to thank my agent and God — Harvey Weinstein, the punisher,” she added to much laughter and applause.

Jane Fonda presented Best Motion Picture, Comedy or Musical to “The Artist,” as even the dog from the film took the stage.

Natalie Portman, Best Actress for “Black Swan” at last year’s Globe’s, was the next presenter. Gervais pointed out that she’s nominated for nothing this year, seeing how she took time off to have her baby. “She’s learned that valuable lesson that all of you knew: never put family first!” Portman gave the Golden Globe for Best Actor, Motion Picture – Drama to Clooney for “The Descendants.” The star first gave a shout-out to Brad Pitt, followed by a “thank you” to Michael Fassbender “for taking over the frontal nudity responsibility that I had,” before making an off-color joke that involved golf. Alexander Payne accepted the Best Picture, Drama award from Harrison Ford shortly afterward.

Mozilla publishes name and shame list of slow Firefox add-ons, cracks down on tardy devs

Firefox slow-addons list

Mozilla, continuing its year-long crusade to speed up Firefox startup and shutdown times, has published a name and shame list of the Firefox’s slowest add-ons.

The list is just one part of Mozilla’s new efforts to highlight slow add-ons, and to help developers make their add-ons more efficient. Over the next two weeks, ‘slow performance warnings’ will be introduced in the add-on gallery so that users can see, before installation, which add-ons will slow down their browser. If that isn’t enough to spur developers into cleaning up their add-ons, Mozilla has also begun reaching out to developers of slow add-ons with tips on how to improve add-on performance. Finally, add-on developers will soon have the ability to perform ‘on-demand performance testing,’ so that they can test their add-on before it’s deployed publicly.

Mozilla reports that the average Firefox add-on slows down Firefox’s start-up time by 10% — which means, if you install 10 add-ons, you will double your start-up time. On fast desktop PCs that kind of slowdown might be negligible, but on older computers, laptops and smartphones, it could be the difference between a 5 and 10 second startup. Mozilla has obviously realized that while massive performance gains might’ve been made with Firefox 4, the addition of third-party add-ons can destroy any user-perceived improvements.

In other news, Mozilla says that a future build of Firefox will block the installation of add-ons (such as toolbars) by third-party software. Add-ons and toolbars that are bundled in this way will require explicit approval when you next open up Firefox. Hooray!

Windows 8 wallpaper available to download, Jupiter and Twin UI spotted

windows 8 wallpaper

With Windows 8 milestone 3 now up for grabs for select Microsoft Connect partners, it’s inevitable that leaked bits and pieces will start popping up around the Web. In fact, the first “official” wallpaper image from the still-brewing OS is already making the rounds.

As you can see, it’s got a similar feel to the good ol’ Windows 7 default background, but features a more subdued smattering of cerulean hues. Those of you who want to use the Windows 8 wallpaper on your current desktop can download it from our file dump.

A few other details have been revealed, too. According to ZDNet’s source, the Windows 8 Jupiter libraries and Twin UI are starting to take shape — though all that’s been located thus far are “[various files] scattered throughout the OS” and the aptly-named twinui.dll.

Lost And Found In The Paneldome: The iRiffPort

iriff1We get mailed a lot of stuff at TechCrunch and sometimes a good item will slip through the cracks. This iRiffPort has been sitting in my pile of gear since it came out in October. I wrote a review. Shot some photos. It was all ready to roll and then somehow it got misplaced and I forgot about it completely. Too bad, because it is a good cable. This week, I received a postcard from Kevin Robertson, head honcho at PocketLabWorks and also the creator of the iRiffPort. He asked me what I thought of his device (and the software with which it works). The iRiffPort…Oh yeah, I think I remember that I liked that thing. What happened to it? I dug through my closet, found it, plugged it in and lo and behold, I had remembered correctly?it was a solid device.

Farragomate is a social fridge magnet game where you make up sentences

farragomate

You know those fridge magnet kits composed of a whole bunch of words? The ones you put all over your fridge door and then try to arrange into all sorts of juvenile and/or amusing sentences. Well, Farragomate is the social, webby version of that very same pastime.

You get to play with a bunch of random strangers in real-time, and make up sentences out of a pre-set collection of words, including some fairly naughty ones, and all players’ nicknames. As you can imagine, some of the results are not child-friendly.

There are ten rounds to a game. Once a round is done, players get to vote for their favorite sentence from that round. You can’t vote for your own creation, of course. There’s in-game chat, too.

I think the vocabulary could be made a bit more eclectic, but even as it is, it’s a nice way to spend a few minutes and meet random strangers on the Internet (always a thrilling experience).

Toyota pulls Cydia theme and ads to appease Apple

Apple asks Toyota to remove jailbreak Cydia theme

In news that will no doubt shake the very bedrock of your belief system, Apple has asked Toyota to remove its Scion theme and its advertising from ModMyi, a Cydia repository. The Scion theme has been available for weeks, but after it received a ton of press in the last couple of days, Apple finally lashed out.

It’s not like we should be surprised, considering Apple has claimed in the past that jailbreaking is illegal – but at the same time, did the Cupertino cronies hear about the ruling that made circumventing DRM, and thus jailbreaking, legal? Anyway, whether Toyota was supporting illegal, legal, or deliciously gray and ambiguous, activity, it doesn’t matter: Apple asked Toyota to remove the theme, and Toyota graciously bent over and capitulated.

This story raises a much more interesting topic, though: this is the first time a multinational company has publicly acknowledged and embraced the jailbreak community. Considering jailbreaking is technically legal, and Cydia’s creator, Jay Freeman, estimates that up to 9% of OS devices are jailbroken, it simply makes good, commercial sense to target jailbreakers with ads. Toyota was simply trying to make some money, for shame!

As long as Apple continues to throw around its increasingly-expansive mass, the legality of jailbreaking will continue to be inconsequential. It will be interesting to see if another big company dares embrace the jailbreak community after this, too.

Evernote Web gets a new interface, Facebook sharing, and more

evernote web

Evernote, the popular multi-platform ‘digital memory’ app, has done some serious re-tooling of its Web interface. In addition to a more polished UI that more closely mirrors the look of Evernote on the desktop, the update brings features like notebook stacks and snippet view to the Web.

Auto-saving is now enabled as well, and you can select multiple items by holding down the Cmd or Ctrl key on your Mac or Windows keyboard. If you’ve got items stored in your notebooks that you want to share with friends or co-workers, Evernote has improved that process, too. You can quickly post an item to Facebook, share it via email, or generate a Web sharing link to paste into an IM conversation or status update.

Head over to the Evernote Web login page to try out the new interface.

Wiping battery stats doesn’t improve battery life, says Google engineer

Android Central

You there! Android hacker! Stop screwing around with your battery stats!

OK, if you're not part of the small subset of rooted users who likes to mess around with things they shouldn't, you can probably skip the rest of this story and read something more interesting below. But if you have fiddled with battery stats on your phone, or used any of the rooted "battery calibration" apps in the Android Market, which do the same thing, it's time to stop. Google engineer Diane Hackborn has taken to Google+ to dispel the myth that wiping battery stats can improve your battery life, or the efficiency with which your phone charges.

This file [batterystats.bin] is used to maintain, across reboots, low-level data about the kinds of operations the device and your apps are doing between battery changes. That is, it is solely used to compute the blame for battery usage shown in the "Battery Use" UI in settings. That is, it has deeply significant things like "app X held a wake lock for 2 minutes" and "the screen was on at 60% brightness for 10 minutes."

It has no impact on the current battery level shown to you. It has no impact on your battery life.

So there you have it. If you want better battery life, you're better off trying more basic techniques like keeping tabs on screen brightness or anything that might be running in the background. Or, y'know, buy a bigger battery

Windows 8 App Store images leaked?

windows 8 app store

Windows 8 images continue to leak onto the Internet, despite Microsoft’s wallpaper-based pleas to those with access to the early releases. Today’s installment courtesy CNBeta shows the upcoming Windows App Store, which will likely feature prominently in Windows 8.

We’ve got our doubts about the authenticity of the image. In addition to showing several of the built-in games which already ship with Windows, Opera is listed — and a competing browser seems like an odd inclusion this early on. Of course, with the browser ballot still in place in the EU for quite some time, Microsoft would probably need to include rivals like Opera and Firefox to stay out of trouble. We’re also not sure why Clickgamer is shown beneath Angry Birds instead of Rovio — the game’s actual publisher.

It’s still early, of course, so it’s entirely possible that the Windows App Store image is genuine but merely using placeholder images and text for now. Anyone else thinking Windows Marketplace might be a more logical name? You know, to keep things consistent with Windows Phone and keep Apple’s legal eagles at bay.

This Is Your Brain Online

Too many hours of Internet use might actually change your brain. Researchers in China have concluded that those who are addicted to the Internet may experience changes in the brain that are similar to those seen in individuals hooked on drugs or alcohol.
A research team lead by Hao Lei of the Chinese Academy of Sciences used magnetic resonance imaging to scan the brains of 35 male and female adolescents.

Haier Brain Wave TV mind-on

We’d all love to be able to control stuff with our minds and seeing as Haier’s 58-inch Brain Wave TV was at CES we had to try. To use the mind control, you have to snap a controller on your head which attaches to your earlobe and with a small metal pad on your forehead. Unfortunately, we couldn’t interface with the set to change channels and adjust volume and such but there was a game where you try to fly a bird through a maze. How’d we do? Well, we made the bird float up and down but that’s about all. So, for those of you with dreams of never again having to relinquish the remote control because you’re wearing it, keep dreaming. Video and pics below the break.

Sand Trap is a fun and difficult physics maze game

Sand Trap

Sand Trap is one of those games that at first seem too hard to bother with, but when you try to stop playing it you discover you’re hooked.

The goal is to get as much sand as you possibly can out of the maze and into the bucket at the bottom of the screen. You need to rotate your maze every which way to get the sand rolling around it. You then try to direct the sand to one of the exits of the maze, and hopefully into the bucket. It took me several tries to actually get sand into the bucket, but that might be due to the fact that I didn’t even realize the bucket was there at first. Things improved significantly after that.

As you level up, the mazes get more complicated, with moving parts and other things making your life more difficult. Once you manage to get through all these obstacles and get enough sand into your bucket, you can move on.

As I mentioned, this is not an easy game, but it’s highly addictive. The graphics remind me of some long lost game from the 80s, but this just proves that you don’t need super graphics and crazy sound to make a game work. There’s a soothing guitar track playing in the background and that’s it, as far as I could hear, and you can enjoy it just as much with no sound at all.

If you like a fun physics challenge, don’t miss out on this one!

Libra for Android helps you track your weight using The Hacker’s Diet system

libra

I’m getting fat; that’s what you see on the screenshot to the right — my gradual move from chubby to portly. But never mind the numbers, look at the pretty graph!

If you’ve ever read The Hacker’s Diet, this graph should be instantly recognizable. Each point shows the weight for a given day, while the trend line lets you see if you’re gaining or losing weight.

When I use my “main” PC, I have a homebrew solution for creating and maintaining this graph. But I’ve had to find a temporary solution for Android, and Libra is it.

It’s a beautifully simple app, very true to the spirit of The Hacker’s Diet. You can create a shortcut on your homescreen that brings you right into the data entry screen, so you just tap the shortcut every morning, feed in your weight for the day and hit OK, and then you get to see your progress (or lack thereof) on the graph.

The app remembers the previous day’s weigh-in, which makes it easy to enter today’s weight (as they’re usually not too different). The graph is zoomable and scrollable, and most importantly, you can export the data to CSV so you’re not locked into the app.

If you ever need to track your weight using an Android device for any period of time, Libra is one excellent solution.
