Apple Hong Kong revives reserve and pick up page, wants to stop iPhones going abroad

Apple Hong Kong revives reserve and pick up page, wants to stop iPhones going abroad

In a bid to keep iPhones sold in Hong Kong on the island nation, Apple has reintroduced reserve and pick up pages for the smartphones. The difference this time around is the inclusion of the customer’s Hong Kong identity card number within the registration form, which goes live between 9am and 12pm each day. The aim is put breaks on the speculative smartphone buyers picking up several devices to mule across to mainland China. You’ll still need a bit of luck; Apple performs a random draw each day for those that registered, and ‘winners’ are informed via email. Each card can apparently buy a limited quantity of the in-demand phone — one that’s getting some smartphone obsessives a little too hot under the collar.

Color vulnerable to simple GPS hack, lets you spy on anyone, anywhere

Color, the $41-million-in-funding location-oriented photo sharing startup, is susceptible to simple GPS spoofing. With nothing more than a jailbroken iPad or iPhone, you can use FakeLocation to trick Color into thinking you’re somewhere else. Within seconds you can be browsing photos that were snapped thousands of miles away. With a little digging, you can pore through photos not intended for your eyes.

Of course, such a hack isn’t illegal as such — every photo you take with Color is public. With FakeLocation you are simply circumventing Color’s very limited location-oriented security mechanism. It does undermine Color’s usefulness (and uniqueness), though — if nefarious types can sit in their bedroom or basement and eavesdrop on classy dinner parties and wild night club soirees, people might be less inclined to share personal photos with those around them.

Fortunately, both for Color and its users, this is an easy security hole to plug — at least in the short term. The app (or server-side) code simply checks to see if the user has ‘teleported’ an impossibly large distance, without any intermediate steps in between. In the long term, though, Color’s users must be aware that its social graph is completely public. Color’s users must realize that every photo they upload is visible by anyone, from any place.

After the break, just to elucidate a little on Color’s actual business model and ultimate intention, we have two amazing quotes from Bill Nguyen, Color’s founder.

T-Mobile brings Square to select small businesses, does the mobile payment thing

T-Mobile is throwing some of its weight behind the mobile payment movement this morning, becoming the first carrier to offer Square credit card readers to a handful of retail outlets. Under the company’s new campaign, stores equipped with T-Mobile smartphones will be able to use Jack Dorsey’s readers to finalize transactions from the comfort of their palms. This should come in handy for cash-only businesses, in particular, as T-Mobile emphasized in its announcement today. It’s all part of the provider’s lineup of small business offerings, though not every retailer will be involved at launch. To see the full list of Squared-up outlets, check out the source link below.

McAfee updates Mobile Security to 2.0, keeps you protected on the go
If you tend to exercise a bit more caution when using your mobile machine, we imagine you’ll welcome McAfee‘s Mobile Security 2.0 with open arms. The Intel-owned security connoisseur has just introduced its refreshed apps, designed to protect Android handsets and slates, along with BlackBerry and Symbian smartphones. All users can take advantage of features such as Complete Anti-virus, Anti-spyware, Anti-phishing Protection, Call and SMS Filtering, while Android owners can also try out App Protection, which is said to interpret “how apps are accessing and possibly transmitting personal data,” in order to keep your privacy under control. If you’ve been a paranoid — or smart — user since the first release, then the update will come at no cost, while those of you looking to jump aboard the secured ship for the first time will need to fork over the $29.99 subscription fee. You’ll find all the details you need in the press release just past the break.

Libra for Android helps you track your weight using The Hacker’s Diet system

libra

I’m getting fat; that’s what you see on the screenshot to the right — my gradual move from chubby to portly. But never mind the numbers, look at the pretty graph!

If you’ve ever read The Hacker’s Diet, this graph should be instantly recognizable. Each point shows the weight for a given day, while the trend line lets you see if you’re gaining or losing weight.

When I use my “main” PC, I have a homebrew solution for creating and maintaining this graph. But I’ve had to find a temporary solution for Android, and Libra is it.

It’s a beautifully simple app, very true to the spirit of The Hacker’s Diet. You can create a shortcut on your homescreen that brings you right into the data entry screen, so you just tap the shortcut every morning, feed in your weight for the day and hit OK, and then you get to see your progress (or lack thereof) on the graph.

The app remembers the previous day’s weigh-in, which makes it easy to enter today’s weight (as they’re usually not too different). The graph is zoomable and scrollable, and most importantly, you can export the data to CSV so you’re not locked into the app.

If you ever need to track your weight using an Android device for any period of time, Libra is one excellent solution.

Koss revamps Porta Pro headphones with iPhone remote, intros ‘interlocking’ earbuds

We’re baffled that we missed this gem of news during the bustle of CES, but it turns out that Koss has recently announced a new version of its iconic Porta Pro headphones. The Porta Pro KTC (Koss Touch Control), as it’s dubbed, is essentially the same piece of retro kit that’s been delighting ears and keeping wallets chubby for nearly three decades. The KTC bit in its name refers to the inclusion of an iDevice-certified inline remote / mic, aimed at keeping on-the-go users in sync with their playlists and phone calls. If you prefer earbuds, but hate tangled cords, then the company’s interlocking intra-aurals might be to your liking. This lineup features in-ears which snap into each other for easier storage. You’ll have a choice between the IL-100 and 200, the latter of which distinguishes itself with the mere addition of an inline remote for iPhones. While there’s no word on pricing just yet for any of the aforementioned units, Koss aims to begin shipping the new audio-wares once spring is in full bloom. For now, you’ll find the press releases and a render of the ‘buds after the break.

Britney Spears Has ‘Crazy’ Cameo On will.i.am’s Album?

Black Eyed Peas mastermind teases a collabo with the pop princess on #willpower, set for 2012 release.
By Jocelyn Vena

Photo: Max Morse/Getty Images

In a sea of A-list contributions for will.i.am’s forthcoming solo album, the Black Eyed Peas mastermind recently dropped one name that will really get pop fans excited. Speaking with Capital FM, will teased that his Femme Fatale collaborator Britney Spears will make an appearance on the album, dubbed #willpower.

“I have a song with Alicia Keys — me, Alicia and Swedish House Mafia. I have a song with the Beats, which is pretty grand. Me and Shakira have been trying to finish the stuff we started, and me and Britney is really crazy,” he said. “So we got a song with me, LMFAO and Eva Simons, a song with me and Busta Rhymes and Swizz Beatz — I got a whole other bunch of collaborations.”

Spears and will.i.am last worked together on “Big Fat Bass,” a spacey, grinding party tune complete with clapping noises and some rapping from will himself. Their recording session was featured on the MTV special “I Am the Femme Fatale.” There’s been no word yet from will’s camp about the song and whether this is a new track or if he will be including “Big Fat Bass” on the album.

The rapper/producer’s love for Brit is hardly anything new: He gushed to MTV News about the pop princess months after they recorded together. “[I discovered] her love for music. I never seen anyone, like, come alive, full of excitement and giggling and laughing behind the mic,” will recalled to MTV News. “She was like a little kid when she was recording the song, and it just brought the whole atmosphere, it changed the whole atmosphere when someone really loves music. So it was great working with her.”

His latest single, “T.H.E (The Hardest Ever),” featuring Jennifer Lopez and Mick Jagger, dropped late last year. #willpower, which also features “X Factor” judge Nicole Scherzinger, will be released later this year.

What are you expecting from will and Brit’s collabo? Let us know in the comments!

Sprint Galaxy Nexus official Google sign-up page now live

Sprint Galaxy Nexus

The official Google sign-up page for the Sprint Galaxy Nexus is now live, waiting for all Sprint subscribers to register for "more information".  We've known it was coming since Sprint verified the rumors on January 9, and I know plenty of folks who are pretty darn excited at the prospect of an LTE powered Samsung Galaxy Nexus on the Now Network.  And who could blame them?  Ice Cream Sandwich on that gorgeous 720p display is a thing of real beauty, and pairing it with the last chance at unlimited data in the USA is a great idea.

It should be the networks first LTE device, and we know it's coming with 32 GB of storage.  There's also a lot of rumors still going strong about features that may be different in the Sprint version.  Some think there may be a higher CPU speed (don't count on that one) because of an early advertisement that showed it with a 1.5 GHz CPU which may have been a misprint.  Also, because the folks at CES didn't want anyone to capture the back of the device on camera, many think it will have a larger stock battery than either the Verizon version or the GSM world version.  We'll have to wait and see, because at this point nobody has a clue just when we're going to see this one on the shelves.  Sprint's been cryptic, like smart companies always are, saying things like "soon" and "mid-2012".  Anyone who claims to have a date is just guessing for the most part, so we're not going to add to the confusion.

In any case, just about everyone reading this who uses Sprint is ready to get their paws on an LTE Galaxy Nexus, so proceed to try to crush the servers hosting the sign-up page with hope and love.  Then jump into the Sprint Galaxy Nexus forums and share your excitement with everyone in hopes that it makes the waiting seem shorter.

OWC Mercury Aura Pro Express SATA 3.0 SSDs doubles your (MacBook) Airspeed velocity

It’s MacWorld, which means those providers of Apple gear are busting out wares for aftermarket insertion into your objects of desire. Other World Computing’s latest offering is a slender solid-state drive ready to be crow-barred into last year’s MacBook Airs. The bombastically named OWC Mercury Aura Pro Express 6G SSD is a SATA Rev. 3.0 drive with a promised 6Gb/s data speed at sizes of up to a staggering 480GB. Since the stock drives are limited to the 3Gb/s SATA Rev. 2.0 (but the controllers run 3.0), you should find a significant performance bump when swapping in the new unit. The toggle-synchronous NAND drives come in a variety of sizes, starting at 120GB ($260), but it’s the brand new and quite beastly 480GB model that has us excited. Sure, $1,150 is a lot to ask for less than half a terrabyte of storage, but you’ll get a three-year warranty for all that cash. We may never give you our money, nor our funny pages, but you can have the press release that’s after the break.

F-BOMB $50 surveilance computer hides in your CO detector, cracks your WiFi

What happens when you take a PogoPlug, add 8GB of flash storage, some radios (WiFi, GPS) and perhaps a few sensors, then stuff everything in a 3D-printed box? You get the F-BOMB (Falling or Ballistically-launched Object that Makes Backdoors), a battery-powered surveillance computer that costs less than $50 to put together using off-the-shelf parts. The 4 x 3.5 x 1-inch device, created by security researcher Brendan O’Connor and funded by DARPA‘s Cyber Fast Track program, is cheap enough for single-use scenarios where costly traditional hardware is impractical. It can be dropped from an AR Drone, tossed over a fence, plugged into a wall socket or even hidden inside a CO detector. Once in place, the homebrew Linux-based system can be used to gather data and hop onto wireless networks using WiFi-cracking software. Sneaky. Paranoid yet? Windows Home Server 2011 released to manufacturers

windows home server 2011 whs

Just a little under two months after its release candidate went live, Windows Home Server (WHS) 2011 has been finalized and released into the wild. The new version of Microsoft’s slick, do-it-all server OS is a big step forward from its predecessor.

Built on the Windows Server 2008 R2 base, Home Server 2011 features a simpler dashboard, a better backup solution, dead simple remote access to your home computers, and Silverlight-powered remote media streaming. For a more detailed look at what’s new in Windows Home Server 2011, you check out Microsoft’s official breakdown.

Drive Extender, of course, didn’t resurface for the final release of WHS 2011 and that’s something a lot of power users are still pretty irked about. Even without Extender, Windows Home Server offers a boatload of useful functionality and might be a good fit for your home network. Manufacturers have already begun building hardware, so you should be able to pick up a device in the very near future.

An evaluation download for Windows Home Server 2011 will be made available in April — we’ll let you know when the links are ready.

‘The Grey’: The Reviews Are In!

Critics give mostly positive reviews to Liam Neeson’s wolf-punching thriller.
By Kevin P. Sullivan

Liam Neeson in “The Grey”
Photo: Open Road Films

For the third January in a row, Liam Neeson returns to kick ass more than any other 59-year-old we know. This time he isn’t taking down sex traffickers like in “Taken” or whatever he was fighting in “Unknown.” No, this time, it’s wolves.

For a movie that was sold on the notion of wolf punching, “The Grey” has received primarily positive reviews for its deeper-than-you’d-think story and characters.

Check out what the critics are saying about “The Grey.”

The Story
“We meet Neeson’s character, a heartbroken loner named John Ottway, on the verge of suicide and thinking back, obsessively, to the woman who got away. His demons temporarily quelled, Ottway boards a small plane with his fellow refinery workers and in one of the most nerve-racking flights ever put on film, the aircraft runs afoul of bad weather and crashes. (For a turbulence wimp like me, this scene was not easy.)” — Michael Phillips, Chicago Tribune

The Star
“Having paid his quality biopic dues as Oskar Schindler, Michael Collins and Alfred Kinsey, Mr. Neeson has, at least for now, turned to the rougher and perhaps more lucrative work of action heroism. It takes nothing away from his earlier achievements to note that he’s really good at it. He conveys a ferocious and absolute seriousness even when the going gets silly, and he finds the soul in each new angry-everyman cipher he is asked to play.” — A.O. Scott, New York Times

The Wolves
” ‘The Grey’ is an unrelenting demonstration that wolves have no opinion. When they attack, it’s not personal. They’ve spent untold millennia learning how to survive, naked and without weapons, in fearsome places like the Arctic Circle in the dead of winter. They aren’t precisely unarmed; they have their teeth and claws, but how far would that get us, even if we had rifles?” — Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

The Director
“We’ve come, in vain, to see [Neeson] danse-macabre with wolves, and the film’s director, Joe Carnahan, provides the occasional horror-film sneak attack. He also manages to create one of the movies’ more nightmarish plane crashes and conclude with just the sort of ludicrous finale that paying customers who’ve seen the ads might assume they would be getting a whole film of.” — Wesley Morris, Boston Globe

The Final Word
“For all its macho standoffs and action set pieces and menacing off-screen howling, ‘The Grey’ is at heart a simple moral fable about how true heroism consists in helping other human beings to live as long and die as well as they can, which is, after all, the task all of us face each day, even when we’re not fending off wolves with broken glass duct-taped to our knuckles.” — Dana Stevens, Slate

Lana Del Rey survived a lifetime’s worth of slings and arrows before her major-label debut, Born to Die, was even released. But now that it’s officially out, critics have had a chance to listen to the atmospheric tracks she’s put together, and for the most part, they’re pretty impressed.

The Chicago Tribune gave it two out of four stars and said the finished product is not always as interesting as the run-up to its release. “[The album] positions itself as a knowing retro commentary. It borrows heavily from B movies starring various second- and third-level ‘Rebel Without a Cause’ bad boys on motorcycles, string-drenched ‘Last Kiss’ pop tunes in which young lovers die in each other’s arms, beehived teens-with-attitude declaring, ‘He hit me and it felt like a kiss,’ ” music critic Greg Kot wrote. While Kot said Del Rey wishes to be taken seriously as “the bad girl in a gown, the cabaret singer with a masochistic streak,” he said she’s not always up to the task, even as he praised her distinctive, draggy vocal delivery and the dramatic, eerie arrangements from producer Emilie Haynie.

Over at BBC, the focus was squarely on the music, saying above and beyond the drama, Born to Die is about “something older and more mysterious than that; the extraordinary, resilient power of the pop song.” The reviewer lamented that nothing on the 12-track album quite reaches the exquisite bummerness of lead single “Video Games,” with several of the songs running “perilously close, while revealing there’s more to her than the love-stunned torch singer [of that song].” What makes the album so fascinating and sets Del Rey apart from the typical “I’m hot, you’re hot” pop tart is her “preoccupation with Hollywood archetypes of American femininity, and her ability to shape-shift between them.”

MTV News’ own James Montgomery believed the hype, writing that the album was “positively brimming with atmospherics — soaring, sonorous strings, echoing electronic boom-bap, morose, maudlin guitar crescendos — all of which imbue it with a truly epic (if not unnecessarily dramatic) scope.” For him, the album is a “thrilling headphone experience” that sounds like the $1 million he suspected it cost to make.

The U.K.’s Guardian also praised the “sumptuous” orchestration and Del Rey’s “fine” voice. But after being impressed by the “beguiling description of a mundane love” affair in “Video Games,” the reviewer said the album’s other lyrics are “incredibly heavy-handed in their attempts to convince you that Lana del Rey is the doomed but devoted partner of a kind of Athena poster bad boy, all white vest, cheekbones and dangling ciggie.” If anything, the Guardian critic didn’t buy the Del Rey tough-girl personality and said the best bet is to mostly ignore the lyrics and focus on “how magnificently most of the melodies have been constructed.”

Auslogics Disk Defrag 3.2 gets smarter, faster

auslogics defrag
Auslogics Disk Defrag has been part of my system maintenance toolkit for quite some time. With the release of version 3.2, it’s now even better at tidying up and optimizing your system’s hard disk drives. In addition to a cleaner, easier-to-use interface, Disk Defrag 3.2 offers improved single file and folder defragging, better processing of multiple disks, a simplified scheduling screen, and more informative tool tips. Auslogics has also fine-tuned the program’s defragmentation and file consolidation algorithms.

For laptop users, there’s a new option to lock the program if your system is running on battery power — so scheduled operations don’t kick in and drain your power source at an inopportune moment. If you happen to have an SSD installed in your PC, you can head to the Disk Defrag options and exclude it from scanning (many think that defragmenting an SSD is a very bad idea).

Auslogics Disk Defrag is a free download and works with most versions of Windows.

Opera 11.10 includes improved power saving features

opera 11.10 battery power

Just recently, the Opera 11.10 release candidate was made available for download. It brought a handful of important feature additions — like HTML5 File API support and IMAP enhancements — and loads of bugfixes. Nestled in amongst the other details in the Opera team’s announcement is one more interesting tidbit: Opera 11.10 offers improved battery optimizations.

The timing here is certainly interesting, what with Microsoft’s recent report on how much power the top five Web browsers consume. In its findings, Opera 11 was fairly low in the standings. While we’ve not seen any new benchmarks yet, we’re curious to know whether the Opera 11.10 RC offers any significant gains.

If you’re running Opera 11.10 on a laptop, let us know if you’re seeing an improvement in your battery life while browsing!

South Korea’s Live Park uses RFID and Kinect to bring your Holodeck fantasies one step nearer

All those long, long drives to Florida in the family station wagon seemed worth it at the time, but now that we’ve found out that those lucky South Koreans have another crazy theme-park, we might just change our minds. Located near Seoul, Live Park uses 3D video, holograms and augmented reality, interacting with RFID wrist bands and Kinect sensors to stitch together a continuous immersive story. You (and your avatar!) have 65 attractions, over seven themed zones, and the world’s biggest interactive 360 degree stereoscopic theater to wave, jump and shout your way through. Two years and $13 million in the making, Live Park’s creator d’strict is now looking to license the concept out internationally, with locations in China and Singapore already earmarked. We’re not sure we could handle that long of a family drive just yet, but with a Hollywood entertainment “powerhouse” reportedly nibbling, maybe we won’t have to.

New software uses facial recognition to defend against prying eyes

Having the right programs and hardware to keep the information on your display safe from prying eyes is never a bad idea, and new software from Oculis Labs offers a very interesting take on how to do just that. It’s called PrivateEye, and it utilizes facial recognition to automatically pixelate the contents of your display when you look away.

If you step away from your system and someone else decides to sit down and poke around, PrivateEye will present a confusing jumble of garbled text. It’ll even notify you if someone tries to peek over your shoulder — and display a picture of your peeping Tom, throw up an alert, or sound an alarm.

Check out the video embed after the break, and share your thoughts in the comments!

Demi Moore Replaced By Mary-Louise Parker In ‘Lovelace’

In other Demi news, Madonna reportedly reaches out to actress after her hospitalization.

Editor’s note: While Us Weekly originally reported that “Weeds” star Mary-Louise Parker would replace Demi Moore as Gloria Steinem in “Lovelace,” the filmmakers have confirmed to MTV News that Moore’s actual replacement is Sarah Jessica Parker.

Amid her personal woes, Demi Moore, who had been set to play Gloria Steinem in the Linda Lovelace biopic, has been replaced by “Weeds” star Mary-Louise Parker.

Sources confirm to UsMagazine.com that the TV star will fill in for Moore, who had to drop out of the film earlier this week after she was hospitalized for “exhaustion.” On Thursday, there was speculation that Chloë Sevigny would play the feminist icon when she was cast as a feminist journalist, but now it seems that those are two different roles.

“Lovelace” is currently shooting in Los Angeles with Amanda Seyfried playing the film’s central character, ’70s porn actress Linda Lovelace.

As the Demi drama rolls on, there are reports that Madonna reached out to the actress shortly after she was hospitalized. Moore has since been released from the L.A.-area hospital.

Sources tells E! News that the singer called her actress pal. “Madonna told Demi she was there if she needs anything,” the E! source says, adding, “They’re pretty tight.”

The ladies last hung out during Golden Globes weekend, and they reportedly were going to see one another again over Super Bowl weekend; Madge is slated to perform during the halftime show. The status of their annual post-Oscars bash is currently up in the air.

While speculation runs rampant about why Moore was hospitalized, sources say that her ex, Ashton Kutcher, is “deeply concerned” for her. Moore is rumored to have been doing nitrous oxide before landing in the hospital. “He still cares about her and wants the best for her,” the source added. “But their marriage is ending and they are both moving on with their lives.”

ClockworkMod developer teases touch-based recovery

ClockworkMod developer Koushik Dutta has shown off some early progress in bringing touchscreen functionality to his popular custom recovery image for Android. In a video posted on his Google+ page, Koush demonstrates the ability to navigate through menus using touch, rather than the regular volume rocker/power button combo required by current ClockworkMod builds.

A custom recovery image is an important tool for anyone wanting to use custom firmware on their Android device, so it's great to see advanced functionality like touch headed to a popular recovery like CWM.

This isn't the first time we've seen early implementations of touch support in custom recoveries, though. Previous efforts have included an unofficial version of ClockworkMod for the Galaxy Nexus, which uses on-screen keys instead of old-fashioned clicky buttons. The important difference with Koush's implementation is that it allows you to touch and scroll anywhere on the screen to select the item you want, just like when you're browsing through menus in Android.

The developer points out that the version shown in the video is still a "rough cut", with plenty of work yet to be done. But based on what we've seen in the video, things are already looking very promising.

Steam beta journeys to Android and iOS, for select invitees

Our friends at Joystiq are members of a privileged club of which we are not. Damn our luck! For those interested to give Valve’s handiwork a spin, it seems that downloading and installing the app puts you in the queue for a future invite. Won’t you join us in the line?

Transformers: Dark of the Moon clip breaks down shooting movies, special effects in 3D (video)

The Transformers: Dark of the Moon Limited Edition Blu-ray 3D doesn’t hit the streets officially until next week, but you can get a look at one of the special features early right here. In this video clip director Michael Bay and other members of the production team explain some of the special challenges that came with shooting the special-effects heavy movie in 3D. It required changes to his usual frenetic cutting style with fewer pans and longer shots, as well as extra work by the editors on each element of animation overlaid on each frame. For a longer discussion about the background of shooting the flick you can check out an interview featuring Bay and 3D-master James Cameron here, otherwise just press play, or check out the press release after the break for a full list of special features included when he disc debuts January 31st.

Windows 8 welcome screen revealed, looks very Metro

windows 8 welcome screen

It’s not really a secret the Microsoft had planned on bringing bits of Windows Phone 7′s Metro UI to Windows 8, but we haven’t seen a lot of really telling evidence. However, with the Windows 8 milestone 3 build now available to Microsoft Connect partners, it was really just a matter of time before we started to get a peek.

Thanks to Rafael Rivera and Paul Thurrott, we’ve now had a glimpse at what the Windows 8 welcome screen will look like. As you can see, the typography is very Metro indeed. Within Windows also mentions that the background image is customizable, and we’re wondering if it might not pull from your current Windows 8 theme. This particular shot shows the CTRL + ALT + DELETE login option, but we imagine you’ll still be able to log in by clicking your account picture tile as well.

Rivera and Thurrott also mention that the tablet version of the welcome screen will allow you to log in by swiping a pattern on the screen — as you can on current Android devices.

Liam Neeson Talks Surviving Plane Crash In ‘The Grey’

‘Nobody’s going to send out reconnaissance planes to try and find these guys because who cares?’ actor explains.
By Kevin P. Sullivan

In most movies where the main characters find themselves stranded after a shipwreck or a plane crash, the survivors take solace in the fact that someone must be looking for them. “The Grey” isn’t like most movies.

In the new film, which hits theaters Friday, Liam Neeson plays a member of an oil-drilling team that gets into a plane crash somewhere near the Arctic Circle during their journey home. Many die in the incident, and the remaining members soon realize that no one is coming for them. Unless you count the wolves.

Neeson told MTV News that the rougher edges of the characters in “The Grey” are what make the film something new and resonant. “They’re definitely flotsam and jetsam of society. One of them says after the mishap with the airplane that ‘Nobody’s going to care about us,’ ” Neeson said. “Nobody’s going to send out reconnaissance planes to try and find these guys because who cares? You know?”

During the course of the film, one of the characters makes reference to “Alive,” the Ethan Hawke film about a rugby team stranded in the Andes. Neeson’s co-star Frank Grillo described how their film and co-writer/director Joe Carnahan took a different road. “The element of survival is different because these are just much different men, as opposed to being civilized,” he said. “They’re not real civilized guys, and I think that’s what Joe [Carnahan] tries to show you in the beginning of the film.”

Even if the realization that no one will look for these men is devastating, Neeson believes that’s ultimately what keeps the characters going. “It’s from that sadness that they realize who they are and what they are and how they’re just a speck of dust in society,” Neeson said. “But that somehow empowers them to continue on with this crazy journey for freedom and solace and to get out of this predicament. It actually gives them strength, the fact that they’re nondescript.”

Apple orders iCab iOS browser to cripple JavaScript modules

The developer of iCab Mobile, a feature-rich alternative to the Safari Web browser on iPad and iPhone, has been ordered by Apple to remove its ability to download and install JavaScript modules.

Presumably it’s not the fact that iCab can execute JavaScript that’s causing Apple to apoplectically puff and splutter, but rather its ability to download modules. Both Apple and Google frown upon apps that contain market-like functionality, and someone at Apple probably thought that iCab’s JavaScript modules looked like a bit too much like discrete apps.

Alexander Clauss, iCab’s developer, has rather a lot to say on the matter. “Maybe if I would have called the modules ‘smart bookmarks’ and would have made installing them much more complicated, Apple would have never asked to remove the ability to download them from the internet. The great user experience of installing modules has probably created a suspicion that these modules are more than just a piece of JavaScript code. From a pure technical point of view, if Apple does not allow to download modules (JavaScript code), Apple would also have to disallow to load web pages in general, because these do also contain JavaScript code.”

In conclusion, to circumvent Apple’s draconian decree, iCab Mobile now simply comes bundled with some 20 JavaScript modules. The ability to download modules made by third-party developers has been disabled, however — but even then, Clauss says that you can simply contact him and ask for your module to be bundled with the next version of iCab.

Windows 8 now available to OEMs via Microsoft Connect

windows 8Select Microsoft Connect partners — major players like HP — have been given their first taste of Windows 8. According to various sources, the build string currently sits at 7971.0.110324-1900, which is the third milestone build of the successor to Windows 7.

So far, there haven’t been many details revealed about Windows 8. An actual System Restore — which is being referred to as History Vault — has been reported, and the feature will allow users and administrators to completely roll back a system to a previous state. A factory reset option is also said to be included.

We’ve also seen Windows Live integration taking shape on the desktop. It’s believed that you’ll be able to log in to Windows 8 using your Windows Live credentials, not just a traditional offline Windows username and password.

All that’s left now is for a leaked Windows 8 build to show up on a torrent site. Feel free to tip us if you see that happen.

Jetbus is a retro-tastic physics game, with a bus

jetbus

Once upon a time, there used to be a DOS game with a caveman and a human powered helicopter. The caveman would shuttle around the screen, madly trying to get customers to where they wanted to go.

Jetbus is not that game, but it’s obviously inspired by it. You’re driving a yellow school bus which has jets. I guess the jet engine takes quite a bit of space inside the bus, because you can only pick up one person at a time.

There are several doors on the screen, each with its own number. As you pick up a person, the status bar at the bottom of the screen shows you which number door you have to take them to.

You must fly your bus carefully, because if it gets bumped around too much, you lose. You earn money on each level, and can visit the garage to buy better jets and damping, power-ups, or even a whole new vehicle.

So while this game isn’t made as well as the original that inspired it, it does provide a few minutes of fun. And now, which one of you guys remembers the original and feels like pointing to it in the comments?

The 16-megapixel camera packs an accelerometer (like Samsung’s QF20) which will flip your image to the correct orientation and a second shutter release and zoom lever on the topmost side of the body for easier snapping. The company also thoughtfully included a second tripod mount, so there’s no futzing with your stand required. Less exceptional features include a 3-inch LCD, automatic picture modes including fish-eye that’ll appeal to the young skaters and hipsters you see littering the streets. It’ll capture 1280 x 720 movies with its independent video button (also recording in fish-eye) and variable aspect ratio. It’s arriving next month for $250, so if you want to become a superstar of the board, you’d better get practicing your Ollies.

Ne-Yo Aims To Revitalize Motown To Its ‘Original Glory’

‘I was just flattered that they thought me worthy of such a responsibility,’ Ne-Yo tells MTV News of his new SVP role.

Ne-Yo never sought to be a music executive, but when Motown approached him to become the senior vice president of A&R, he couldn’t say no.

“Sometimes the music that feeds your soul isn’t necessarily the music that feeds your family. So I never envied those cats who had to make those types of decisions,” Ne-Yo told MTV News.

On Tuesday, news broke that Ne-Yo made a move from Def Jam, where he started his career, to Motown, where he will now record and help to develop new talent. The Grammy Award-winning singer explained to MTV News that he still has close ties to Def Jam, which like Motown falls under the Universal umbrella. It was Universal Republic and Island Def Jam Motown chairman/CEO Barry Weiss and senior vice president of Motown Ethiopia Habtemariam who were instrumental in bringing Ne-Yo over in an effort to re-brand the storied label that Berry Gordy started back in 1959.

“They sat me down and talked to me about the whole revitalization of Motown, bringing Motown back to its original glory,” Ne-Yo said. “I gotta say, beyond anything else, I was just flattered that they thought me worthy of such a responsibility.”

Music legends like Diana Ross, the Temptations, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye and Smokey Robinson all at one time recorded for Motown. “It’s great big shoes to fill. I was told at one point the title that I now hold is the title that Smokey Robinson held when he was there,” he said.

Yes, he’s been named an executive, but the “So Sick” singer has not lost his passion for music. His upcoming fifth album, which was originally titled The Cracks in Mr. Perfect, has now taken a new turn. Though fully confident in his new material, Ne-Yo said he’s undecided on a title. For now, he is just creating.

“As I’m writing and recording records, the project would take on a whole new personality within itself. That’s just the creative process,” he said. “So as of right now, there is no title for the album. I’m still working on that … the running title was The Cracks in Mr. Perfect, but I’m in a whole ‘nother head space now.”

Line Grapefruit is a tricky Flash “path” game

linegrapefruit

Okay, see that snaking line coming in from the right on the screenshot? That’s you. And see those large round circles? Those are supposedly grapefruits, only they won’t sit still – they keep moving up and down and cutting across your path. And if you touch one, you die!

That’s what you have to deal with in Line Grapefruit. But that’s not all – you’re also on a time limit. In fact, you have a very limited amount of time to make it through the “path” (for lack of a better word). You need to snake your way through the winding trail without touching anything. The good news is that a grapefruit only kills you if it touches the end of the line – once you’ve made it past the grapefruit, nothing happens if it crosses the path you’ve made.

This is not an easy game, but it’s quite unique – I can’t recall seeing another game quite like it.
