Google Books for Chrome gets offline support, one less excuse for not reading the ‘classics’

Google Books Offline

So, you can read all those tomes you’ve picked up through Google Books offline on your smartphone and tablet, but what about on your laptop? Well, if for some reason you’ve got the desire to power through Finnegans Wake in your browser (though, we’re not really sure why you’d do that to yourself) we’ve got good news — the Google Books app for Chrome now caches your titles for local reading. To download a book, just hover over the cover in library view and select “make available offline” from the pop-up. Then, even when you can’t get your Chromebook connected, you’ll be able to sit back and relax with a classic novel or seedy romance tale.

Mozilla Messaging reintegrates with Labs, unifies focus on Web-based communication

Mozilla Messaging, citing Mozilla’s increased focus on Web-borne communications, will be reintegrating with Mozilla Labs.

The Messaging subsidiary was formed in 2008 to focus on Thunderbird, but given Mozilla Labs’ current focus on identity and contact management, it now makes sense for the groups to be merged. Thunderbird will be unaffected by the change — some URLs might change, but that’s it — and presumably Messaging’s F1 and Raindrop will thrive in the Labs playground.

What this means for the end user — for the hundreds of millions of Firefox users — is that the next big additions will be communication- and messaging-oriented. Contacts and F1 will be almost certainly be baked into Firefox 5 or 6, both of which will be released this year — and, who knows, there might be something else even more exciting up Mozilla Labs’ sleeve!

Verizon says service ‘returning to normal’

Verizon outage

Just got word back from Verizon spokeswoman Brenda Raney about the overnight/early morning 4G LTE outage. Here 'tis:

"Verizon Wireless 4G LTE service is returning to normal this morning after company engineers worked to resolve an issue with the 4G network during the early morning hours today.   Throughout this time, 4G LTE customers were able to make voice calls and send and receive text messages. The 3G data network operated normally."

Hopefully things should be back to normal and we can all go back to worrying about signal strength and battery life.

Jetbus is a retro-tastic physics game, with a bus

jetbus

Once upon a time, there used to be a DOS game with a caveman and a human powered helicopter. The caveman would shuttle around the screen, madly trying to get customers to where they wanted to go.

Jetbus is not that game, but it’s obviously inspired by it. You’re driving a yellow school bus which has jets. I guess the jet engine takes quite a bit of space inside the bus, because you can only pick up one person at a time.

There are several doors on the screen, each with its own number. As you pick up a person, the status bar at the bottom of the screen shows you which number door you have to take them to.

You must fly your bus carefully, because if it gets bumped around too much, you lose. You earn money on each level, and can visit the garage to buy better jets and damping, power-ups, or even a whole new vehicle.

So while this game isn’t made as well as the original that inspired it, it does provide a few minutes of fun. And now, which one of you guys remembers the original and feels like pointing to it in the comments?

Steven Spielberg ‘Never’ Thinks About Retiring

‘Adventures of Tintin’ and ‘War Horse’ director tells MTV News, ‘I don’t feel any different than when I was 12 years old making movies.’
By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

Steven Spielberg
Photo: MTV News

In looking at Oscar-winner Steven Spielberg’s résumé or IMDb page, it’s the stuff of two or three careers, not just one. Who knows when the man sleeps, as he has not one but two highly anticipated, expected-to-be-blockbuster films in theaters this holiday season: “The Adventures of Tintin” and “War Horse.”

Not that we anticipate he’ll slow down anytime soon, with “Lincoln” and “Robopocalypse” set to hit theaters in 2012 and 2013, respectively — not to mention the slew of films on which he serves as a producer, plus the constant rumblings about the possibility of more “Indiana Jones” and “Jurassic Park” movies.

When MTV News sat down with the prolific director recently during the press day for “Tintin,” we asked his thoughts about slowing down.

“I never think about being tapped out or retiring. Even though I’m turning 65 in a matter of a week, I never think about that; it just doesn’t occur to me,” he replied. “I just love so much the work and the discovery: the whole process of discovering a new story, a new way to shoot a film, working with new actors I’ve always wanted to work with and never got a chance to until now. And so, for me, every day is a new day, every day is exciting.

“And I don’t feel any different than when I was 12 years old making movies with my dad’s 8-millimeter movie camera: I’ve got that same kind of percolation every time I get onto a set.”

Check out everything we’ve got on “The Adventures of Tintin” and “War Horse.”

Apple reportedly swapping recalled iPod nanos for 6G counterparts; you have yours?

It’s been a few weeks since Apple’s issued a worldwide recall on a number of its first-gen iPod nanos at risk for becoming uncomfortably hot under the collar. Evidently, many folks who’ve sent their devices into AppleCare to get swapped are finding that they’ve being treated with an upgrade to the current sixth-gen variant. Lovers of click wheels may view its square, touchscreen shell as folly, but hey, its hard to fuss over owning latest there is, right? Procter & Gamble partners with Mobeam to deliver coupons to your phone

Ah, remember those good ‘ol days when we actually used those things called scissors and clipped our coupons when we wanted to save 50 cents from a bottle of Tide? Those activities have already been teetering on the brink of obsolescence since early last year, when Target introduced a program featuring mobile scannable coupons. Google Wallet and Walgreen’s have furthered along the concept by offering them as well, and now Procter & Gamble are jumping on board. The company’s teamed up with mobeam, a startup which has found a way to make mobile coupons readable using normal laser scanners, still the weapon of choice for many retailers. Next up, the two partners are hoping to work with OEMs to integrate the tech into new phones, push out an app to take advantage of it and begin field testing the process with shoppers and retailers sometime in 2012.

Once it kicks off, any company should be able to issue digital coupons; those who choose to partner with mobeam, however, will have access to opted-in consumer information that tracks which couponing websites the consumer visits, the location and time each coupon is redeemed and other items purchased using the app. Physical coupons will still be around for a while — P&G asserts that there will still be plenty of coupon-clippers that hunt through newspaper inserts or print them out — so the old-fashioned method isn’t completely dead yet. We’d sure love to see mobile couponing grow to a point where more and more trees are getting saved, though.

Words With Friends for Android updated, promises “smoother game experience”

wordswithfriends

As several of you noted in the comments to our post asking for cross-platform iOS/Android games, Words With Friends for Android does not provide the smoothest gaming experience… and that’s being rather charitable.

You might be happy to hear that a couple of days ago Zynga released an update which promises to solve many of the Android-specific issues, such as notifications not popping up.

Sadly, installing the update is not a smooth experience; you have to manually uninstall the previous version, and then go to the Android Market and install it. What’s nice is that it doesn’t lose your saved games – this screenshot shows a game I’ve started before the update and continued after updating.

How’s the new update working out for you? Let us know in the comments!

IE9 and Firefox 4 post top marks in Web browser power use comparison

Over on the Internet Explorer Blog, Microsoft has posted results from an extensive comparison of the top five Web browsers. The goal: to determine whether Internet Explorer 9, Firefox 4, Chrome 10, Safari 5, or Opera 11 is able to squeeze the most life out of your laptop’s battery.

A baseline was determined with test systems sitting idle, and then browsers were pointed at about:blank, a news site, the HTML5 Galactic demo, and the IE9 fish tank demo. Perhaps unsurprisingly, IE9 came out on top — though Firefox 4 was a very close second on nearly every test. As you can see, the other browsers didn’t necessarily fare quite as well, with Google Chrome, Safari, and Opera all posting significantly worse scores. In Opera 11′s case, a laptop battery would last over one hour more with Internet Explorer 9 installed.

But what we’d really like to know is where did Microsoft find the dilithium crystals required to run a Galactic Total Power Consumption test…

March 31 is World Backup Day 2011

World Backup Day 2011

Those benevolent armchair philanthropist Redditors are at it again! Four days ago a ‘self’ post extolling the potential virtues of a Backup Day exploded with 2500 upvotes and 1000 comments — and now World Backup Day 2011 is actually happening.

On March 31, as part of the global data-saving initiative, you are encouraged to back up all of your cherished photos and videos, and important documents. If you’ve ever had a hard disk fail, and not had a backup to fall back on, you’ll know that it’s a bit like losing a sizable fragment of your soul. If you’ve never backed up your important files — or if you only back up sporadically — do it on World Backup Day!

It’s not hard to back up your data, either. A 2TB drive costs only a fistful of dollars, and it takes just a few minutes to set SyncToy for Windows, or Time Machine for Mac, to mirror your data every night. If you prefer a cloud-based solution, there’s always SugarSync and Dropbox. Finally, don’t forget that Bundlelytic has a charity giveaway for three excellent data-backup-and-recovery tools — $160 of software for only $25, and 100% of the proceeds to go the Japanese Red Cross.

For even more backup options, for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux, check our list of 13 great backup programs.

Apple buys flash storage maker Anobit for $500 million, aims to establish R&D lab in Israel

The rumor mill has been churning on this one for the last few days, but it’s now as official as it’s ever apt to get: Apple has decided to splash out the $500 million to buy Israeli flash-chip outfit Anobit. The fabless designer of MLC NAND flash chips should be a good fit, given Cupertino’s reliance on solid state storage technology for its iPad, iPod, iPhone and Macbook Air lines. With $84 billion in the bank, the purchase has cost the company just over half a percent of its war chest, and we’re guessing it’ll just barely feel the pinch when said funds are transferred over. The story was originally reported in the Calcalist financial daily newspaper, with the verified Twitter account of the Prime Minister of Israel chiming in with the following:
“Welcome to Israel, Apple Inc. on your [first] acquisition here. I’m certain that you’ll benefit from the fruit of the Israeli knowledge.”
Moreover, Apple’s expected to open up a research and development center in the nation, marking its first outside of the USA. If history has anything to say about it, we highly doubt Apple will ever open its mouth one way or the other on this, but it’ll be interesting to see what related nuggets are uncovered in the company’s next quarterly filing with the SEC.

Cloud Girlfriend will use a swarm of females to satisfy men

The social network Cloud Girlfriend
Cloud Girlfriend, despite what it sounds like, doesn’t really have anything to do with cloud computing. Rather, it uses a cloud of women to pose as your girlfriend on Facebook, or your favorite social network of choice. The service is scheduled to launch ‘soon,’ and there’s no indication of how much it will cost.

With the tagline ‘The easiest way to get a girlfriend is to already have one,’ Cloud Girlfriend promises to be a very interesting startup indeed. The brains of the operation, David Fuhriman, speaking to CNET, says it’s all about fulfilling Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. “CloudGirlfriend.com can fulfill Maslow’s higher needs, even though the users know that the interaction is virtual. They will interact with a real person and see real profile images of the girl with whom they interact. This interaction can build confidence and esteem as well as provide real training experiences in navigating a friendship and a relationship.”

Our concern, of course, is that it’s very nearly April 1. We’re also worried by the fact that Fuhriman has a name that sounds ominously like a social subculture that we’ve grown strangely attracted to here in the Download Squad bunker.

Finally, just stop and think about it for a second. Because your cloud girlfriend will be entirely virtual, she could be based anywhere. She could be underage — or overage — or she might be someone who you know in real life. She could even be a relative of yours, and you’d never know.

Let’s not forget this is the Internet we’re talking about, folks. Worst case scenario, she could turn out to be a hairy, male truck driver from Texas. Such as… your dad, perhaps?

Windows 8 getting a built-in PDF reader, Metro-style

For what seems like an eternity, Download Squad readers have reacted to news of security exploits targeting Adobe Reader with a common sentiment: why doesn’t Microsoft build its own secure PDF reader into Windows? Apparently the Windows 8 team agrees, and they’re working away at an application called Modern Reader which is exactly that.

From the handful of screenshots Paul Thurrott has shared, it’s clear that Modern Reader has been built with Metro in mind. You can see the Reader back button in the top-left corner of the yellow image and the minimal page navigation bar on the right. We’ve posted some larger images we managed to scrape from Google’s cache after the break.

Thurrott also mentions that Modern Reader is the first program spotted which is built using AppX — a packaging technology that may allow developers to roll a single build to both Windows 8 desktops and Windows Phone 8 mobile devices.

Internet Explorer 9 nears 4% share on Windows 7, IE6 extinction countdown picks up steam

internet explorer 9 ie9

Microsoft has shared some news about the state of its most and least loved Web browsers — Internet Explorer 9 and 6, respectively. Even with IE9 only recently exiting beta, Microsoft reports that 3.6% of Windows 7 users are now running the new browser (no mention of Vista… what’s with that?). The post also reveals that the adoption rate is almost five times what IE8 garnered in the early going.

It’s also interesting to note that there are now more than 1,000 sites utilizing Internet Explorer 9′s Windows 7 integration features — like the new desktop notification support we showed you in Hotmail.

But perhaps the best news of all is that Microsoft’s IE6countdown.com now has more than 400 partners and is generating nearly two million pageviews per month, helping to lure users away from the woefully out-of-date browser. Can the end come soon enough, DS readers?

‘Breaking Dawn,’ ‘Harry Potter’ Lead MTV Year-End Polls

‘Hunger Games’ wins Most Anticipated Movie of 2012.
By Eric Ditzian

Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart in “Twilight: Breaking Dawn – Part 1″
Photo: Summit Entertainment

For last few weeks, guilds, associations and critics’ groups have been doling out year-end honors to the likes of “The Artist” and “The Descendants.” Boring!

MTV Movies, by contrast, has been running a series of fan-voted polls to get to the bottom of what 2011 was really all about. Which film delivered 2011′s finest sex scene? Which set was most successfully stalked by the paparazzi? Between flashing his abs and breaking up street fights, what was truly Ryan Gosling’s best moment of the year? These were among the questions put to fans in poll form, and the response was staggering. Millions of votes were cast. Comment sections lit up with equal parts enthusiasm and vitriol.

Now, without further ado, it’s time to reveal the winners.

Best Ensemble: “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1″
Of all our Best of 2011 polls, the race for Best Ensemble was the most contentious. Though five films were in the running (“Bridesmaids,” “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2,” “Breaking Dawn,” “Horrible Bosses” and “The Help”), it was a photo finish between the wizards of Hogwarts and the supernaturals of Forks. After nearly 2 million votes cast, Bella, Edward and co. were the vampire victors by a narrow .13 percent margin. — Amy Wilkinson

Best Sex Scene: “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1″
The sauciest and most titillating of our Best Of polls pitted beloved Bella and Edward against some “Bridesmaids,” Justin Timberlake and “Immortals,” not to mention a whole lot of Michael Fassbender. Let’s be honest, there’s no loser when it comes to Best Sex Scene, but the headboard-breaking, pillow-shredding one in “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn- Part 1″ was almost a guaranteed winner from the start. Fans told us they were excited about the big moment way back in July, and if their enthusiasm wasn’t apparent then, the boatloads of votes they cast in this poll were loud and clear. — Kara Warner

Best Movie Robot: Optimus Prime, “Transformers: Dark of the Moon”
It doesn’t take genius artificial intelligence to determine which movie robot was your favorite from 2011. Despite strong showings from the likes of ’80s Robot from “The Muppets” and “Real Steel” boxing champ Atom, it was fearless Autobot leader Optimus Prime that stole the show with over 60 percent of the vote. Breaking out early with a healthy lead, no one stood a chance against the “Transformers” icon. Our only real regret with this category — and really, how could anyone regret a Best Movie Robots category? — is not sticking in Megatron and seeing what kind of damage the Decepticon warlord could have done here. Our money would still be on Prime, naturally. — Josh Wigler

Best Dressed: Kristen Stewart, “Breaking Dawn – Part 1″
It’s hard to deny that a film was the “Best Dressed” of the year when you consider that one of its most anticipated moments wasn’t a moment at all, but a wedding dress. And when the secret was finally out, it was everywhere. Designers made pricey replicas, a more affordable version and even prom dresses inspired by the long-sleeved gown Stewart wore. Not even Ryan Gosling and his suits could take away Bella’s special day. — Kevin Sullivan

Best Superhero: Magneto, “X-Men: First Class”
Looks like you folks enjoy your heroes a bit on the morally gray side, as Erik “Magneto” Lehnsherr of “X-Men: First Class” fame cleaned up this category with a strong 42.9 percent lead. In the end, as awesome as runners-up Thor and Captain America are (it wasn’t even close for Green Lantern or Green Hornet), there’s just no denying the Oscar-caliber work Michael Fassbender put into Magneto, a performance that matches — and even exceeds, in some views — Ian McKellan’s fabulous interpretation from the previous “X-Men” films. Sounds like a ringing endorsement for a “Magneto: Nazi Hunter” prequel to “First Class” to us! — J.W.

Best Couple: Bella and Edward, “Breaking Dawn – Part 1″
Much like our Best Ensemble poll, Best Couple boiled down to a face-off between “Harry Potter” and “Breaking Dawn.” Would Ron and Hermione’s romance cast a spell over voters? Or would Bella and Edward’s epic vampire sex be unbeatable? In the end, it was indeed the hot honeymooners who prevailed, feathers flying. — A.W.

Best Set Stalking: “The Dark Knight Rises”
“The Dark Knight Rises” kept no secrets about what was happening down on Wall Street this past fall. It was all-out war between Batman and Bane, and it was all too big to hide. That wasn’t the only set-stalking goodness, though. Not only did we get to see the two-man army duking it out, but we got an early glimpse of Catwoman that didn’t exactly have people purring and a brand-new ride for the Caped Crusader. Now all we have to do is figure out what the hell that bomb-like thing was. — K.S.

Best Ryan Gosling Moment: Ab flash, “Crazy, Stupid, Love”
Those who’ve been following the Gos will likely agree that 2011 has been a banner year for the Golden Globe-nominated Hollywood heartthrob. The Best Ryan Gosling moment nominees included inspiring a protest against People magazine’s choice of Sexiest Man Alive, his hilarious acknowledgement/ reenactment of popular Internet meme F— Yeah! Ryan Gosling, flashing some killer abs in “Crazy, Stupid, Love,” the gruesome and chilling head stompage in “Drive,” and that time he broke up a street fight in NYC (about which he later admitted he was embarrassed). The Gosling-loving masses have spoken and they like their man best … shirtless. — K.W.

Most Likely to Win Best Picture: “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2″
Last week, the Screen Actors Guild and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association dealt blows to the final “Potter” film’s chances of nabbing an Oscar nomination for Best Picture. No matter! Voters in our poll selected “Deathly Hallows, Part 2″ to win Oscar’s top prize. It wasn’t even close. “The Artist,” generally considered the Best Picture front-runner, placed a distant second behind the boy wizard and his wand-waving pals. “The Descendants,” another Oscar fave, came in dead last. And while “Potter” won’t prove as popular with Oscar voters as it will with MTV voters, the franchise denouement could still sneak in a Best Picture nomination; experts who track the situation closely suggest a Producers Guild of America nod could clear the way. — Eric Ditzian

Most Anticipated Movie of 2012: “The Hunger Games”
In one of the bigger upsets of these end-of-year polls, Katniss KO’d Bella (Batman, Spider-Man and Snow White, too). Not bad work for a character who hasn’t even been seen on the big screen yet. The approaching year is easily the most exciting in recent memory; when “The Hobbit,” “The Amazing Spider-Man” and a new Bond film don’t even crack the top three you know 2012 is shaping up to be a cinematic year for the ages. What’s more, the “Hunger Games” win has got to come as welcome news to Lionsgate as the studio prepares to launch a new YA-adapted franchise the same year as the “Twilight Saga” finishes up its box-office run. — E.D.

Torus is an impressive 3D Tetris game powered by HTML5

torus

As far as Tetris goes, most variations look quite similar. You’re usually looking at a “wall” of bricks directly from the front. Torus takes that notion and throws it away; as you might have guessed from the name (or screenshot), this Tetris clone is played on a ring-like 3D surface.

You rotate the ring itself with the arrow keys, while a Tetris-like piece slowly (excruciatingly slowly, in fact) descends from the top. As soon as you make a solid line, it disappears.

Not all pieces are Tetris-like; some of them wouldn’t really work with a regular Tetris game but are a good fit for Torus’ 3D format.

Torus is ideal for playing at the office, because it has absolutely no soundtrack. The game is dead-quiet. It’s also very very slow (slow enough for me to mention it twice in one post) so you can safely look away for a moment and then keep playing. Also, as soon as the game loses focus, it automatically pauses.

Bottom line: It’s an impressive demo of the power of HTML5; if it were a bit faster, it would have some serious addictive potential.

App tells you who’s updating your Galaxy Nexus, can’t tell you whether to care

Galaxy Nexus update checker

Fun fact: There are more versions of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus floating around, software-wise, than you're probably aware of, even when it comes to the GSM version. The basic rule here is that if you have the yakju version of the Galaxy Nexus, it's GSM, and mysid is CDMA/LTE, in the case of the Verizon Galaxy Nexus. But there actually are regional differences as well, so you might see ykjuux in Canada, or there's yakjuxw, or yakjusc. Probably others. Make your head hurt? Mine, too.

And with that has come great debate over whether the various verisons are updated directly from Google, or from Samsung, or from some magical neckbearded update gnome deep in the forest. As I've said on Google+, so long as the updates come in a timely manner and aren't borked (not that they should be), I couldn't care less whose servers they come from.

But if you are worried about that sort of thing, there's a little tool called "GN Official Update Checker" that makes it easy to figure it out. All it does it check the ro.product.name line in your phone's build.prop file and tell you whether it's updated by Google or not updated by Google.

Whether it keeps you up at night is entirely up to you.

Update: Turns out the CDMA/LTE mysid variant (that's the Verizon Galaxy Nexus to you and me) does actually get its updates from Google after all, according to Googler Jean-Baptiste Queru. So that's that. JBQ also says that yakjuxw and other yakju variants signed by Samsung have only "really small region-specific tweaks".

CPU Wars and c-Jump: the nerdiest card and board games ever

c-Jump

Board games and card games are kind of dorky to begin with. And there are plenty of titles out there that hold a special place in the heart of the nerd (just ask one about Settlers of Catan). But, there is a line, a line which even the nerdiest amongst us might not care to cross. For example, c-Jump — a board game that teaches the basics of programming. Some of the spaces you’ll land on in the course of your journey down the mountain include “goto jump;” and “switch (x) {“. Then there’s CPU Wars, for the three people out there that think Magic: The Gathering is too mainstream. In this card battle game you pit CPUs from throughout history against each other and attempt to collect all your adversary’s processors. You can order c-Jump through ThinkGeek for $25 and pledge cash to CPU Wars over at Kickstarter. You’ll find a video of the card game after the break.

Facebook For Android Finally Has More Daily Active Users Than Facebook For iPhone

Android FB Done 2 5For the first time, the Facebook for Android mobile app has eclipsed the daily active user count of Facebook for iPhone. The Android app launched in September 2009 more than a year after its iPhone sister and has been playing catch-up ever since. Both are developed internally by Facebook. This week the two were briefly tied, but the Android app is now pulling away with 58.3 million DAU compared to the iPhone app’s 57.4 million, according to the AppData tracking service. With the Android device base growing at 550,000 activations per day and Timeline now available for Android but not yet for iPhone, I expect this gap to widen.

Dodge is a space-shooter in which you have no weapons

dodge

Space-shooters are usually a fairly fiery affair, with many types of guns, weapon upgrades, power-ups and more. Dodge does away with all of that, while keeping the very essence of a space shooter: Dark background, fast action, and stuff blowing up all over the place.

Your vector-looking spacecraft is the fastest thing on the screen, most of the time. And as the header implies, you have absolutely no weapons; you can’t get any, either. All you have is agility and maneuverability.

Your opponents shoot heat-seeking missiles at you; the missiles lock on and start tracking you. The trick is to dodge the missiles while putting them in the path of one of your enemies, thus letting them have a taste of their own medicine.

There are three types of enemies, at least in the first few levels: “simple” spaceships which fire slow projectiles, “tanks” which seem to be more serious and take more hits to destroy, and “circles.” The circles simply explode, spewing twenty or thirty very fast projectiles. This sounds dangerous, but is actually great once you learn to use them; they are very destructive for tanks, and can even blow up other circles.

The soundtrack is very techno, but it meshes very well with this type of game. Intense fun!

Editorial: What’s wrong with TV, and what it might take to change it

America’s favorite pastime, and perhaps that of all first-world countries, has yet to be truly rocked by technology. Sure, there have been a few true advancements like on-demand, streaming and the DVR, but only about 30 minutes of the average seven hours of TV Americans watched in 2010 was time shifted. Forty percent of homes have a DVR today, but most are just using them as tapeless VCRs. The reasons are complex and can’t be summed up easily, but most would agree that DVRs and streaming options are where smartphones and MP3 players once were: plenty of people are throwing things against the wall, but nothing’s sticking. I don’t have the answers, but I do understand what the problem is and what it might take to change it. I can only hope that such a proposed change could become a self-fulfilled prophecy.

Mumford & Sons Call New Album ‘A Different Experience’

‘It’s challenging in all the right ways,’ Marcus Mumford tells MTV News about the band’s Sigh No More follow-up.
By James Montgomery, with reporting by Matt Elias

Winston Marshall and Marcus Mumford of Mumford & Sons
Photo: MTV News

Mumford & Sons have spent most of 2011 working on the follow-up to their breakout Sigh No More album (when they weren’t touring the U.S. by rail, of course). Though they’ve been performing a handful of new songs live, last month they officially unveiled a somber new tune called “Ghosts” during a stop at a Philadelphia radio station.

But as the year draws to a close, there’s still no official release date (or even a title) for the new album, which sort of makes sense, especially since they’re still working on it, as the band told MTV News backstage at the KROQ Almost Acoustic Christmas in Los Angeles.

“We’re still recording. We don’t really like to put any boundaries on it; we’ll keep going until it’s right,” frontman Marcus Mumford said. “It’s definitely a different experience from the first one, as it should be, I think. But it’s been challenging in all the right ways. It’s going well.

“I think we just want the songs to be good, and to sound right, and to feel like we’ve expressed everything we want to as straightforwardly and honestly as we can … and we’re working towards that,” he continued.

“We’re really enjoying playing the new songs live, and we still feel that our recorded work should be adverts for our live work. The fact that we call it work is a bit pretentious — it’s not work, it’s just playing music with your mates. It’s really fun, and it still is. I think we’re getting on better than we ever have.”

Mumford said that the songs on the new album have been inspired by their whirlwind year, which not only saw them break through in the U.S., but found them going to places they never thought they’d go and meeting the kinds of folks they never thought they’d meet.

“We’ve been writing as we go, and you can’t deny the fact that our circumstances around us will always affect our writing, so we sometimes intentionally put ourselves in circumstances that we want to be inspired by,” he explained. “We went to Nashville for a couple weeks in January and did some really cool writing there; we felt really happy with some of the stuff that came out of it. We stayed in this little farmhouse and had some friends who are musicians come play with us. We played a house show, just had a really nice time. And then we write on the road in these hectic places with lots of people around, and I suppose we’ve always put in ideas that we pick up from conversations with people, and things that we read and things that we listen to and feel.”

Of course, there’s also good news for fans of Sigh No More: From the sound of things, the follow-up isn’t going to stray all that far from that debut. In fact, it’s basically the same songs. After all, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

“If you’re asking whether they’re different from the first album,” multi-instrumentalist Ben Lovett laughed, “what we’ve actually done is taken all the songs from the first album, used all the same chords, some of the same melodies, and just tweaked the lyrics!”

Google Chrome now uses SPDY HTTP replacement, halves page load time

SPDY in Google Chrome
We’re not entirely sure of the time line here, but it looks like Google has now rolled out the SPDY HTTP replacement to its full bevy of Web services, including Gmail, Docs, and YouTube. If you’re currently using Google’s Chrome browser you’re probably already using SPDY.

We originally reported on SPDY way back in November 2009, when Google introduced it as yet another experiment in making the Web faster, like Go, Native Client and speculative pre-connections. Over the last 18 months, though, SPDY support has found its way into the stable build of Chrome.

SPDY is basically a streamlined and more efficient version of HTTP. At its most basic, SPDY introduces parallel, multiplexed streams over a single TCP connection — but at the same time, SPDY allows for prioritization, so that vital content (HTML) can be sent before periphery content (JavaScript, video). All in all, the SPDY protocol can halve page load times, which is obviously rather significant.

The best bit, though, is that SPDY is an open-source project. HTTP 1.1 is a lumbering beast that needs to be replaced before low-latency real-time computing really becomes a reality, and SPDY is one of the best options currently on the table. To be honest, we’re not sure why SPDY hasn’t received more coverage — it’s awesome in every way. At the moment, though, the only way to help speed up SPDY’s proliferation, is with an experimental Apache mod.

As far as actually ‘trying it out,’ your best bet is downloading Chrome, hitting up some Google sites, and then checking chrome://net-internals to see your active SPDY sessions. SPDY is a transparent replacement for HTTP, though, and as such it’s rather hard to see its effects. Google’s sites definitely feel fast in Chrome, but there are more technologies than just SPDY at work.

Zoho Docs 2.0 has landed in the App Store, and the most notable change is that it’s now a universal app. Now you’re able to take advantage of the app’s mobile productivity powers on your larger iOS device. Retina display support has also been added, as have document sharing options — which you can utilize in both the viewer and collaboration modes.

Just like the basic Zoho service, the app is available totally free of charge. Paid subscriptions get you additional storage space and start at $3 per month for professional use.

Boeing 787 review: ANA’s Dreamliner flies across Japan, we join for the ride

The Boeing 787 Dreamliner is not the largest plane in the world. Nor is it the fastest. It doesn’t have on-board showers or full-size beds, nor can it lay claim to the greatest range or sleekest entertainment system in the air. But it will change the way we fly for decades to come. Boeing’s latest commercial airliner is several feet wider and longer than the 767, the company’s smallest wide-body (twin-aisle) jet, yet it’s 20 percent more fuel efficient. Given that fuel is the single greatest operating cost for any airline, savings of that magnitude could return the industry to profitability, and perhaps even usher in lower airfares for passengers.

But while the 787′s efficiency makes it an attractive option for airlines, it also serves up a more comfortable ride for passengers. We recently had a chance to fly on a domestic round trip between Tokyo and Okayama in Japan aboard an All Nippon Airways (ANA) Dreamliner — one of the first two ever delivered. Quieter engines, dimmable windows, LED lights, huge overhead bins, an in-flight bar and on-demand entertainment enhance comfort, even during shorter flights, while higher humidity, a greater internal pressurization level and a gust alleviation system reduce the effects of turbulence. Care to take a ride? Jump past the break to join us on board Boeing’s brand new Dreamliner.

How to Master Facebook Timeline in 5 Quick Minutes

Yesterday, Facebook rolled out its new Timeline feature to the masses. This ultra-illustrative, chronological listing of posts, photos, shared links, check-ins, and more is a radically different arrangement than the Facebook profile you’ve been used to. Here’s how to curate it to best effect.

Google bids $900 million for Nortel’s patents to protect against litigation trolls

Nortel, once one of the biggest telecoms company in the world but now in the death throes of bankruptcy, has selected Google’s $900 million bid for its patent portfolio as the stalking horse bid. This doesn’t mean that Google will automatically win Nortel’s massive array of telecoms patents, but it does mean that Google is the preferred buyer.

Google, which has a history of lobbying for patent law reform, has been the target of many patent litigation suits. Google’s relative infancy means that it has a lot less patents in the vault than big-hitters like Microsoft, Oracle and IBM, and buying Nortel’s portfolio of 6,000 patents could provide better protection against patent litigation in the future. It’s worth noting that both Apple and RIM have showed interested in the portfolio, too.

Mashable speculates that the patents — which are nearly all telecoms-related — will be used to defend against Oracle’s attacks on Android’s use of Java. We reckon that Google is simply looking to cover its future endeavors in the world of networking. In the absence of patent law reform, and continued threats to net neutrality, owning a bunch of telecoms patents sounds like a very sensible move.

Sand Trap is a fun and difficult physics maze game

Sand Trap

Sand Trap is one of those games that at first seem too hard to bother with, but when you try to stop playing it you discover you’re hooked.

The goal is to get as much sand as you possibly can out of the maze and into the bucket at the bottom of the screen. You need to rotate your maze every which way to get the sand rolling around it. You then try to direct the sand to one of the exits of the maze, and hopefully into the bucket. It took me several tries to actually get sand into the bucket, but that might be due to the fact that I didn’t even realize the bucket was there at first. Things improved significantly after that.

As you level up, the mazes get more complicated, with moving parts and other things making your life more difficult. Once you manage to get through all these obstacles and get enough sand into your bucket, you can move on.

As I mentioned, this is not an easy game, but it’s highly addictive. The graphics remind me of some long lost game from the 80s, but this just proves that you don’t need super graphics and crazy sound to make a game work. There’s a soothing guitar track playing in the background and that’s it, as far as I could hear, and you can enjoy it just as much with no sound at all.

If you like a fun physics challenge, don’t miss out on this one!
