Hamilton: Whitmarsh was talking ?rubbish?

Lewis Hamilton has dismissed claims that Jenson Button’s good form has affected his own. McLaren boss Martin Whitmarsh claimed last week that Hamilton was ‘feeling the pressure’ from Button and that this was affecting his 2011 season. Responding to this, Hamilton said: “He made some comments which I disagree with. It’s rubbish.” “My issues have been [...]

Gartner’s Q3 2011 smartphone figures: Samsung on top globally, Android tops 50 percent share

Yahtzee! Now that Canalys, IDC and Strategy Analytics have had their turn, it’s Gartner’s go to serve up its summary of the smartphone world as seen in Q3 2011. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the headlines aren’t changing much, with Samsung becoming the number one smartphone manufacturer worldwide with sales reaching 24 million, and Android’s quarterly market share inching over 50 percent to best iOS, BlackBerry OS, etc. We also (re)learned that Apple shipped 17 million iPhones in the quarter, which represents an annual uptick of 21 percent, but a 3 percent drop from Q2 2011 due to the looming iPhone 4S release; predictably, Gartner’s predicting that Apple’s Q4 2011 will be its strongest yet with the 4S on the market. Breaking the operating system share a bit, we found that Symbian is (strangely) still being included, and that Android managed to soar from 25.3 percent in Q3 2010 to 52.5 percent today. iOS actually lost a bit of ground (16.6 percent a year ago compared to 15 percent today), but in fairness, so did BlackBerry OS and Bada. Curious about Microsoft? It’s claiming just 1.5 percent of the worldwide pie, a fairly precipitous drop from the 2.7 percent it had a year ago. Far more fun facts and figures await you after the break.

Google scientists are laboring away on futuristic projects in a top-secret lab somewhere in the San Francisco Bay Area, The New York Times claims. Robert Pattinson Calls ‘Breaking Dawn’ Sex Talk ‘Weird’

‘You can kind of say anything,’ he laughs to MTV News at L.A. premiere.
By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

It ain’t cool to show up early to your own party. Robert Pattinson took his time Monday night (November 14) arriving at the RPattz Super Terrific Happy Hour — otherwise known as the black-carpet premiere of “Breaking Dawn – Part 1.”

The wolf pack and the Forks students had come and gone. Ashley Greene, Kellan Lutz and Peter Facinelli were likely settled into their seats, popcorn in hand. Little Mackenzie Foy had already bounded inside. But the party didn’t truly begin until around 6:30 p.m. PT, when Pattinson sauntered onto the scene and the assembled crowd — including the hordes that had been camped out in Tent City for days — erupted into screams so high-pitched you’d have thought they’d been bitten by a vampire. Perhaps they had.

And they couldn’t get enough. By the time Rob made his way to MTV News’ live-stream platform, he couldn’t quite believe real life had not in fact gone flying out the window and a surreal fantasy had enveloped him instead. “It’s like an alternate reality,” he said of the premiere. “My everyday life is so boring, and then you go to these things and everyone thinks something cool is happening.”

Check out hot photos of Robert Pattinson on the Red Carpet!

It is, dude. For a while. Pattinson’s press tour has been going on for weeks now, with the 25-year-old skipping across the globe and stopping to chat with MTV News on a number of occasions. Wherever he goes, though, the talk always seems to turn to one topic: sex. Specifically, the honeymoon boom-boom that Pattinson’s Edward Cullen shares with Kristen Stewart’s Bella Swan.

“It is kind of disgusting,” he laughed. “It’s weird. I feel like I’m going a little bit crazy. You can kind of say anything. It’s like sex and death.”

One thing Pattinson hasn’t discussed — and one thing he jokingly admitted on the carpet — is that though “Breaking Dawn” ended up rated PG-13, he is quite sure the harder, bloodier version would have made for a better flick.

“Oh yeah, completely. Definitely,” he said of an R-rated “Breaking Dawn.” “It’d be way better.”

Stick with MTV News as we roll out even more from our “Breaking Dawn” premiere live stream!

Google’s Blogger platform adds five new HTML5 Dynamic Views

Google Blogger Mosaic Dynamic View

Google, as part of its ongoing and much-needed overhaul of its popular Blogger platform, has just enabled five dynamic, HTML5ish, AJAXy ‘Dynamic Views’. There’s a video introducing the new layouts after the break.

The five new views provide fresh and interesting ways to explore your favorite Blogger blogs. The Mosaic view, for example, creates a wall of thumbnails — click one, and it zooms to fill the screen; click it again and it minimizes. Flipcard is similar to Mosaic, but not quite as eclectic. Sidebar, Timeslide and Snapshot round off the new views, with each one obviously targeted at different types of content, from photo blogs, to text-only philosophy blogs, and everything in between.

For now, you have to visit a Blogger blog and add /view to the URL to enable the new Dynamic Views. If you own a Blogger blog, you can disable the new views — and really, why weren’t they disabled by default?

If feedback is positive — which we’re sure it will be — these Dynamic Views will soon be enabled by default. You’ll also be able to edit the views in much the same way as current Blogger templates.

‘Twilight’ Fans Bond Over Vampire Love In ‘Tent City’

‘I would have come two weeks ago if they would have let me,’ one camper tells MTV News outside ‘Breaking Dawn’ premiere.

LOS ANGELES — Here at MTV News, we’ve been celebrating the highly anticipated release of “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1″ with a flurry of “Twilight”-related activity.

Now it’s time to spotlight the very dedicated, passionate fanbase. On Saturday, we headed out to “Twilight” fan central, fondly referred to as “tent city,” where more than 900 people had already set up camp ahead of tonight’s Los Angeles premiere. (Join MTV.com live from the red carpet at 8 p.m. ET!)

“I got here at 12 a.m. Wednesday night,” Megan Lambert told us in front of her “Team Jacob”-themed tent. Lambert holds the #2 spot in line and is hoping for a hug from Taylor Lautner at the premiere.

Campers Lisa Paulosky, Emily Chadduck and Christy Brolezi bonded over their love for “Twilight” and formed a Facebook group ahead of the premiere for fellow fans who wanted to camp out. Several members traveled a considerable distance to be there.

“I came from Chicago,” Paulosky said.

“I came from New Mexico,” Chadduck admitted.

They all want one thing on Monday: a Robert Pattinson encounter.

“I need to take a picture with Rob,” Brolezi said. “My heart will break if I don’t.”

The most creative fan group award goes to the ladies behind the Facebook group Kristen Stewart’s Hot Bodyguard, a.k.a. Team HBG. Unsurprisingly, the ladies are hoping for a photo opp with Kristen and their main man, HBG.

“We have a special present for HBG that we’ve been holding onto for a year,” founding member Lynsey Jacob told us.

We also happened upon a young male fan, who wasn’t at all shy about his love for the lady vampires, particularly Nikki Reed. “I’m Team Vampires,” Cody Huddleston said with a smile.

The dedication among these fans is a marvel, and they would have camped out sooner if they could have. “I would have come two weeks ago if they would have let me,” Shannon Berry said. “I would have come a month ago.”

Tonight, join MTV.com live from the “Breaking Dawn – Part 1″ red-carpet premiere as we talk to your favorite stars about all things “Twilight”!

HTML5 MP3 player lets you listen to your music library inside your browser

html5 browser mp3 audio player
While this slick little HTML5 audio player might not pack all of the features of your favorite desktop media application, it’s still a very cool demonstration of what a Web app can do with access to local resources — like MP3 and OGG files.

Just fire up http://antimatter15.github.com/player/player.html in your HTML5-compatible browser and browse to the topmost folder in your music library. The app will quickly build an index of all your tunes and let you start listening right inside your Web browser. Click on the filter library text, and you can enter a search string — results load as you type.

There’s a volume control, shuffle mode, play/pause control, and you can click and drag to skip forward or rewind during playback. As OMG! Ubuntu points out, you can even save the app to your hard drive and run it offline, which is pretty darn cool.

Not all browsers are equal when it comes to HTML5 implementation, of course. We found that Chrome worked the best, and Firefox was OK. It’s also worth noting that this music player comes from the same developer that created one of our favorite restartless Firefox 4 add-ons, drag2up.

AMD ships ’16-core’ Bulldozer-powered Opteron 6200

We seem to have mislaid our definition of fashionably late — a fortnight after the promised “October” launch, systems packing AMD’s Bulldozer-powered Opteron 6200 (formerly Interlagos) will commence shipping to enterprise customers. If you haven’t been paying too much attention, you might just believe the claim about it having 16 cores — Bulldozer’s architecture has eight two-core modules rather than 16 independent ones. Despite the short delay and the conspicuous claims, the company reckons it’s 84 percent faster, 73 percent more efficient and uses half the power of the equivalent Intel Xeon. At the same time, Sunnyvale firmed up news on the Valencia (Opteron 4200) and announced 2012′s Opteron 3000 platform with the new Zurich chip — designed to run on low-power web hosts. Enterprise customers can read the PR we’ve got after the break and then begin placing orders; the rest of us will have to keep waiting to see if Andre Yang can push his FX all the way to 9GHz.

[Thanks, Khan]

Firefox 4 Friday: 25 million downloads, anti-aliasing, and how to make it look like Firefox 3

Firefox 4 racks up 25 million downloads in 3 days

If you’ve had your head under a rock for the last few days, here’s this week’s Firefox news in brief: Firefox 4 was finally released.

Yes, 13 months after the initial release of Firefox 3.7 alpha 1 and four more alpha builds, a renumbering to 4.0 and 12 beta releases, and finally a release candidate (or two), Firefox 4 has been released into the wild.

Just like every other Firefox release, initial reception for the new browser has been nothing short of insane. 7.1 million downloads were registered in the first 24 hours and the download rate continued to accelerate, clocking in more than 15 million downloads after two days. At the time of writing, three days in, Firefox 4 has been downloaded over 25 million times. In case you’re wondering, the United States accounts for 7 million of those downloads, just beating out Germany’s Firefox-downloads-per-capita.

But now that you’ve installed Firefox 4 (you have, right?), what do you do now? Well, obviously, in true Download Squad fashion, it’s time to tweak Firefox 4 using add-ons and about:config hacks!

First up is an add-on called Stratiform that lets you change every aspect of the Firefox 4 browser chrome — including the color of that orange button!

3DS to beat out original DS’ first year sales, land killing blow during holiday season

First 3DS sales were great, then not so much, and now things seem to be evening out somewhere around “normal.” According to numbers released by Nintendo, the fledgling handheld is poised to break the original DS’ first year sales numbers — closing out its 8th month with 1.65 million units sold, or roughly 69 percent of its predecessor’s 2.37 million first year sales. Noting that half of the old DS’ year one sales were made during the holiday season, Nintendo is confident the 3DS will surpass its predecessor’s numbers before hitting the one year mark. We’ll let you make your own predictions — Nintendo’s press release is after the break, if you want to compare notes.

Windows 8 Explorer to feature Ribbon UI, SkyDrive and Mesh integration?

windows 8 explorer ribbon

Rafael Rivera and Paul Thurrott have posted a second look at some of the early changes which have surface in Windows 8 milestone 3. First there was the restyled Welcome Screen, and now it appears that Microsoft is toying with bringing the Ribbon UI to Explorer.

The Ribbon, like in Microsoft Word and Excel, is context-aware, adding tabs for specific tasks which apply to the folder you’re viewing — such as library or picture management. You can also make out two new buttons in the status bar, which allow you to change the current folder’s view style.

It’s clear from all the placeholder images and repeated elements that this is very much a work in progress, but featuring the Ribbon more prominently in Windows 8 would certainly be a logical progression for Microsoft. It’s slowly become more ubiquitous, moving beyond Office and into Wordpad, Paint, and several of the Windows Live Essentials applications.

There’s more to the screenshots than the Ribbon UI, however. Our friend Long Zheng has noted two interesting elements in the images: Web sharing and sync (image after the break). That would likely mean users will be able to quickly upload files to SkyDrive and synchronize using Live Mesh right from Explorer in Windows 8. That’s not a total surprise considering many of the earliest leaked images of Windows 8 showed Windows Live integration on the desktop.

Skype 5.3 for Windows released, improves mobile video call quality

Version 5.3 of Skype for Windows has just been released, with the main emphasis of the new release being improved call quality, and the quality of video received by mobile Skype users. Presumably one party of the video call must be using Skype for Windows 5.3, though.

Beyond improved call quality, not much has changed. You can now see your friends’ presence icons when contact cards are collapsed, and the topic editing button is now always visible on the conversation header. For a complete list of changes, hit up the Skype Garage blog.
