Skype 2.0 hotfix enables video chat on Sprint’s Nexus S 4G

Looks like some of the Skype crew might’ve had a sleepless night to please owners of the Nexus S 4G. If you’ll recall, June 30th saw a major update to its Android app enabling video chat on four devices; although the Nexus S was part of the club, its door was locked for Sprint’s 4G variant. That’s quickly changed, however, as the team’s set loose a hotfix to grant it access — this despite initially stating we’d have to wait for a “future release.” You can grab the app from the Android Market if you haven’t yet, and be sure to let us know how it goes in comments. Oh, and for those anxious Thunderbolt owners? We’d recommend not holding your breath until after the 4th of July holiday.

Firefox 4 rockets to 5% global usage share, IE9 wallows at 1.5%

Firefox 4 usage share graph

Using some early numbers from both StatCounter and Net Applications, Mozilla’s noisiest hominid, Asa Dotzler, has illustrated Firefox 4′s meteoric rise to around 5% of Web browser global usage share. Internet Explorer 9, which launched two weeks ago, seems to be enjoying a much more casual stroll in the park with just 1.5% of the global Web usage share.

Interestingly, we can see IE9 dipping between March 20 and 21, just before the ‘Important’ Windows Update rolled out. It’s hard to say whether IE9 is only growing because of the installed-by-default Windows Update, but that small dip definitely sticks out — did excitement peter out? Did people download IE9, try it out, and summarily uninstall it? Perhaps, given their close proximity, the stats show an attention shift from Microsoft to Mozilla?

Numbers-wise, if the bottom left corner of the graph shows 2.3 million downloads for IE9, we can guesstimate that that it has now been downloaded 5 million times. Firefox is clocking in at 37 million downloads after five days of public availability.

We wonder whether Microsoft knew its release schedule would coincide so closely with Firefox 4. Internet Explorer 9 — a great browser by almost every metric — was never going to do well against anything emanating from the maws of Mozilla. The main thing, though, is that Microsoft has now shown that it’s serious when it comes to the Open Web. If Internet Explorer 10 is good, and 11 and 12, then we might finally see it compete with the zealous Mozillan horde.

Kodak granted reprieve in its ITC battle with Apple and RIM

Kodak scored a small victory this week in its International Trade Commission (ITC) case against Apple and RIM for their devices’ infringement of Kodak’s patent on picture previews. Back in January, an ITC administrative law judge (ALJ) made an initial determination that the patent was invalid and that iPhones and Blackberrys don’t infringe Kodak’s IP. After reviewing the decision per the parties’ request, the Commission changed a few of the ALJ’s patent claim interpretations and remanded the case for fresh analysis regarding both infringement and validity. Kodak, naturally, is painting the remand as a victory, even going so far as issuing a celebratory press release. Such swagger seems a bit premature, however, as the judge could once again find in favor of the crowds from Cupertino and Waterloo. The next Kodak moment isn’t until August 30th, when the ALJ is due to render his ruling. Stay tuned.

Rugged gadgets put to the test in Engadget labs, wanton destruction ensues

Rugged Gadgets

Lets be honest, we’ve all had those moments where we’ve wanted to hit our phone with a hammer or throw our laptop against the wall. Generally though, we resist those urges, knowing full well that it would spell the end for our precious gadget. There’s a special class of rugged devices though, that are designed to withstand anything you throw at it — or throw it at, as the case may be. We took a few of these beefy products, as well as one Extreme Sleeve for your non-military grade electronics, and put them through a battery of tests that would turn your average gadget into an unrecognizable pile of silicon and plastic. Beyonce Shrugs Off ‘Fear’ In ‘Year Of 4′

‘I’ve never been afraid to fall,’ she says in the special, which debuted Thursday on MTV.
By Jocelyn Vena

Beyoncé in her “Year of 4” special
Photo: MTV

It’s a good time to be Beyoncé. The singer just released her latest album, 4, and fans were taken behind the scenes of its completion in the special “Beyoncé: Year of 4, which debuted Thursday (June 30) on MTV.

The intimate special opens with black-and-white footage of the singer swimming. “I’m always happy when I’m surrounded by water,” she says. “I think I’m a mermaid or I was a mermaid. The ocean makes me feel really small, and it puts my whole life into perspective. … It humbles you and it grounds you and it makes me feel almost like I’ve been baptized. Am I the same Beyoncé? Absolutely not.”

The special is footage of B’s life, complete with montages of the frenzy surrounding her: Video shoots, rehearsals, studio time and photo shoots all pepper her life as she prepares to release her fourth solo studio effort. However, she is quick to point out that, before she got back to work, she needed to decompress in a major way.

“After I finished the last tour, I was a bit overwhelmed and overworked, and my mother was the person that preached to me … ‘You really need to live your life and open your eyes and you don’t want to wake up with no memories,’ ” she explained.

Beyoncé shows what she did on her off-time, which included playing aunt and wife. “I was able to spend time with my family and pick my nephew up from school, and it gave me time to reflect,” she said.

In that reflection time, Beyoncé made a major business decision: Her father, Mathew Knowles, would no longer serve as her manager. While explaining the decision, fans are taken back in time thanks to vintage video of the Knowles family. “A real change meant separating from him,” she said. “It was scary, but it empowered me, and I wasn’t going to let fear stop me.”

Fans are once again on Beyoncé’s whirlwind world tour as she continues work on her album. “I am a workaholic, and I don’t believe in ‘no,’ ” she said. “If I’m not sleeping, nobody’s sleeping.”

“My focus is not bigger; it’s quality, and I want to make sure it’s something I’m proud of years from now,” she says later on. “It’s very difficult managing myself. Every night when I go to sleep, I ask hundreds of questions. I’m making mistakes, and I’m learning from them. I’ve never been afraid to fall — and I say all these things, but now I’m being tested.”

As the special closes, Beyoncé shoots her “Run the World (Girls)” video and continues work on her album, including meetings with record executives. It all ends with B swimming once again, as she says, “I’m learning to drown out the noise. I only have to follow my heart. I run my world.”

What did you think of Beyoncé behind-the-scenes world? Let us know in the comments!

Sand Trap is a fun and difficult physics maze game

Sand Trap

Sand Trap is one of those games that at first seem too hard to bother with, but when you try to stop playing it you discover you’re hooked.

The goal is to get as much sand as you possibly can out of the maze and into the bucket at the bottom of the screen. You need to rotate your maze every which way to get the sand rolling around it. You then try to direct the sand to one of the exits of the maze, and hopefully into the bucket. It took me several tries to actually get sand into the bucket, but that might be due to the fact that I didn’t even realize the bucket was there at first. Things improved significantly after that.

As you level up, the mazes get more complicated, with moving parts and other things making your life more difficult. Once you manage to get through all these obstacles and get enough sand into your bucket, you can move on.

As I mentioned, this is not an easy game, but it’s highly addictive. The graphics remind me of some long lost game from the 80s, but this just proves that you don’t need super graphics and crazy sound to make a game work. There’s a soothing guitar track playing in the background and that’s it, as far as I could hear, and you can enjoy it just as much with no sound at all.

If you like a fun physics challenge, don’t miss out on this one!

Into the deep end: We dive head-first into Android’s Pool Party photo sharing app

Pool Party

Thanks to a generous reader, we’ve found ourselves taking a couple of laps through the Pool Party, the photo sharing application developed within Google by its "Slide" team. Whether Pool Party’s an active part of the new Google+ social network on Google or just an internal project whose innards will be (or have been) adopted by services such as Google+ remains to be seen.

So what is Pool Party? Plain and simple, it’s photo sharing. You log in, create "Pools," and share photos. You can invite individual users to a Pool, and in the process grant them access to view, comment on, save, share and "like" photos within that pool. You can have multiple pools (no idea if there’s a maximum), with different people in each pool.

And that’s about it. Photo sharing, plain and simple.

The app itself — which is still in private beta as of this writing — is simple, straightforward, and plenty fast. It’s pretty spartan, with little in the way of user interface or settings. You can change your first and last name, profile photo, gender, and whether you want to receive live updates.

As for the Pools themselves, you can change the Pool name; view, add and remove members; receive e-mail updates on pool activity (including each time a photo or comment is posted); and whether or not to receive push notifications.

There’s also a web component (at poolpartyapp.com), which is pretty much the same thing, just in browser.

So will we see a Pool Party in Google+? Or will the services be folded in? That remains to be seen. But let’s certainly hope so, as the Pool Party app (there’s also one available for iOS, which our pals at TiPb have given the what-for) is clean, easy photo sharing, and that’s a must-have for a social network looking to break the Facebook hold on the world.

We’ve got a plethora of screen shots after the break.

Thanks, Dr_Mcq!

Microsoft is also reportedly in talks the site, which is the 10th most popular video destination online.

Google toeing the photo-sharing waters with Pool Party

Pool Party

Google has been rolling out an array of new services this week, most recently being their social effort, called Google+. Now it is rumored that they’ve been developing a photo sharing service named Pool Party.

Android has long lacked a photo sharing app that has been able to grab the masses like Instagram does on iOS. Lightbox is the most recent app to come around and is the one most likely to fill that void. However, if these rumors about Pool Party are correct, a photo sharing app from Google will likely have incredible traction.

Here is what is known about Pool Party thus far:

 • It is being developed within Google by the Slide team
 • The developers are giving a strong emphasis to group albums or ‘pools’ that display photos in real-time
 • It is currently in beta mode and is invite-only
 • It is listed both in the Android Market and in the iOS App Store

While it is available in the Market and will download to your device, you won’t be able to sign up without an email "approved" by the developers; that is, have an invitation from someone who is already a user.

Much is still unknown about Pool Party, but the concept of a photo sharing app developed by Google is extremely intriguing and one that I would love to try out. The link to the app after the break. But unless you’re in on the beta, you’ll be left high and dry.

Hanako 2 robot acts like a human dental patient, makes us say ‘aah’ (video)

No, she’s not in a state of shock, nor is she hunting for plankton — she’s simply waiting for the dentist to polish her pearly whites, just like any other conscientious robot. Known as the Showa Hanako 2, this humanoid was originally developed last year as a tool for dentists looking to practice new procedures. Now, engineers at Japan’s Showa University have updated their dental denizen, adding a motorized head and replacing her PVC skin with a more realistic silicon coating. She also boasts speech recognition capabilities and can execute freakishly natural movements, including blinking, sneezing, coughing and, under more unsavory circumstances, even choking. See her in action for yourself, after the break.
