Otellini: Intel’s new tablet chip gaining momentum

More than 100 tablets using Intel’s Oak Trail chips are being designed and some will start shipping in the first half of this year, Intel CEO Paul Otellini said Wednesday at CES.

Many of those low-power tablets will be shown at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Otellini said at a press conference ahead of the show. The show officially begins Thursday and runs through Sunday.

BlackBerry PlayBook WebWorks SDK now available to developers

Before today, if you wanted to develop an app for RIM’s upcoming BlackBerry PlayBook tablet you were stuck with an Adobe Air SDK for the device. Now, however, RIM has released the WebWorks SDK — first announced in September of 2010 — which gives developers the ability to create apps using standard Web code like HTML5, JavaScript, and CSS. That should make it a relatively painless procedure to port apps from other platforms which are built on Web technologies.

The WebWorks SDK is available for download from RIM now, and interested developers should definitely grab it — especially since RIM is offering a free PlayBook to developers of certain kinds of apps (launchers, repackaged browsers, and soundboards need not apply).

DroidG does Gnutella P2P searches, downloads on your Android device

Gnutella — the venerable peer-to-peer file sharing network — doesn’t get as much time in the spotlight today, what with the rise of BitTorrent. It’s still around, though, and Android users now have an app which lets them connect to the Gnutella network, search for files, and download directly to their device: DroidG.

Fire up DroidG and connect to the network, then begin your search. Within a few seconds I was able to find tracks from one of my most-listened-to CDs by Volbeat. Search results can be sorted by file type, estimated speed, or number of sources. DroidG lets you queue multiple downloads, though transfers are done one at a time. From the download screen, you can tap and hold on any file in your queue to display a menu that lets you pause and resume downloading, remove it from the queue, or open the file when it finishes transferring. Some files — like MP3s — can even be previewed while you download them (image after the break).

As with any mobile P2P app, it’s probably best to use DroidG when you’re on a Wi-Fi connection — unless you’re lucky enough to have a carrier which offers cheap wireless data plans.

DroidG is available in the Android Market, and it’s a free download. Read on to grab the QR Code, or hit the download link below.

ADW.Launcher for Android hands on: attractive and highly customizable, but bloated

Sitting like rough and tawdry monarchs atop of the Android home screen and app launcher pile are LauncherPro and ADW.Launcher. We’ve reviewed Zeam Launcher, and looked at Go Launcher and QuickDesk, but somehow the two big boys have always escaped our critical eye. Well, no more!

Today we’re going to look at ADW.Launcher. It’s a free download, but there’s an ‘EX’ version that will cost you about $3. It shares a lot of its features with Zeam — and its looks are somewhat similar, too — but ADW is a lot more customizable. There are also a healthy number of ADW themes from third party developers, which provide easy access to ‘unique’ and sexy home screens.

Right then! Roll up your pants, it’s time to wade in.

ADAC crash tests first production Mitsubishi i-MiEV, makes a mess but scores well

Looks like Volvo’s C30 Electric isn’t the only EV paying a heavy price for wanting to be run on the roads. Mitsubishi’s i-MiEV, one of the first modern full-bore electric autos to be promised to hit US shores (but certainly not the first to make it), has just been subjected to crash testing by the ADAC, Europe’s largest motorist club. The car went through both 40mph frontal and rear offset impacts, similar to the sort used by our own humble NHTSA. The car didn’t score perfect marks, with some deformation in the footwell, but there were no major problems noted and, most importantly, the electrical systems safety cut automatically upon impact. This means no surprise electrocutions for anyone on the inside or out, which is a good thing — unless you’re a mutant lizard who enjoys such things.

Update: We’ve updated the source link to the ADAC site, where you can see some additional images and even video of the crash. You’ll need to exit the Google Translation window to view them, though.

RIM extending tools to other smartphone platforms, going cross-platform?

RIM extending tools to other smartphone platforms, going cross-platform?

Over the past year or so it’s become clear that there is a cure for the CrackBerry addict. For many it’s called the iPhone, for others it’s Android, while still others are getting their kicks from other platforms. IT departments worldwide are relaxing their rules and getting a little smartphone agnostic and now it sounds like RIM is thinking about finding a way to reel those newly straight-edged users back into their former habits. RIM Vice President Pete Devenyi had this to say on the subject:

BlackBerry is and will continue to be dominant in most corporations, [but] it’s not going to be the only device given the fact that consumers have the choice to bring in their own devices and IT departments are often letting them in. So there’s a question there. Do those corporations have to manage those devices differently or is there the possibility that RIM might extend capabilities to make it easier for those corporations to manage those devices as well? … If the right thing to do is to extend a subset of those [BlackBerry] capabilities to be able to manage other devices, it’s worthy of a conversation

Right now he’s just talking about device management, but if this goes forward it could be a sign of a willingness for RIM to move some of its proprietary services to other devices. BBM on Android and iPhone? We know a few people getting positively giddy at that (highly speculative) prospect.

Mozy online backup now offers improved restore features

Mozy is an easy, inexpensive way to back up your important data to the cloud — and that component of the service has always been quite good. Restoring data, however, has been a little bit more of a chore. Thankfully, Mozy has been working hard to improve the restore experience, and the updated interface is now live.

Apart from an improved UI, Mozy now offers one-click downloading of all your data as well as instant downloads of individual or multiple files — you no longer have to wait for files to be packaged first. The improved process is due in part to the new Restore Manager, which begins streaming files to your PC as soon as they become available. Mozy also now displays thumbnail previews of your images (as you can see above), making it easier to restore those family photos you accidentally deleted.

Menu Wine Breather Review

A few weeks ago I received a sample of a new type of wine decanting product – the Menu Wine Breather.  It’s a hybrid sort of device that combines characteristics of single-serving active wine aerators (like the Vinturi and the Soiree) with characteristics of an old school passive wine decanter.  The net result is a device that promises to aerate an entire bottle of wine in a couple of minutes.  I used it for all the wines I served on Thanksgiving so while that experience is fresh in my head I thought to share my thoughts on it for you holiday shopping consideration.

Before we get too far have a look at this video to see how the product operates:

Design

The first thing I noticed when unboxing the product is its contemporary Danish design aesthetic.  It’s got a Breaking Bad chemistry lab kind of feel to it, and the fit and finish is thoughtful and high quality.  I was a little confused how the three pieces on the top of the device go together but after some experimenting and an E-mail to the manufacturer I was able to figure it out.  The part that confused me is a rubber gasket that remains on the vessel after you remove the pourer:

Usability

Once I rinsed the product off and put the top on I was ready to decant my first bottle of wine.  From watching the video I understood how the device was intended to be used.  The fact that it aerates an entire bottle all at once makes it a good match for holiday gatherings.  On a weeknight when you’re having just a glass or two you probably don’t want to decant an entire bottle.  But when you’re serving a few bottles in succession to a group, the Wine Breather’s ability to aerate an entire bottle in just a couple of minutes is very useful.  A traditional decanter would be sitting there full of the first bottle of wine for an hour or more and subsequent bottles likely wouldn’t have time for more than a splash decant (where you purposely pour the wine into the decanter such that it splashes on the bottom of the vessel and aerates the wine a bit in the process) and some aggressive swirling around in the vessel and each glass.

It’s a little nerve wracking at first when the bottle is mostly full and it’s completely inverted on top of the Wine Breather.  I kept a hand on it to make sure it didn’t topple over.  Guests and kids were quite fascinated by yet another wine contraption I’ve busted out over the years.  Never discount theatrics as a means for getting people interested in a wine accessory.

I like that I can pour the wine into the vessel and let it sit for a few hours if I have the time.  Or, if I’m in a hurry I can quickly pour it back into the bottle (for a so-called “double decant”).  I prefer pouring wine from the bottle it came in rather than from a decanter because people can see the label of the wine -and- decanters can be tricky to pour from (the last glass in a bottle especially).

One minor issue I had with my test unit is that the silver part of the pourer separated from its black housing.  This makes it a little difficult to remove the pourer from the neck of the vessel for cleaning the device:

How it Works

The Wine Breather reminds me a bit of the Soiree (review) because of the way wine cascades along the sides of the glass and exposes the wine to air in the process.

I used the device on three bottles for Thanksgiving.  For each, I tasted the wine directly from the bottle to get a feel for how much decanting it seemed to require and then based on that I’d more or less aggressively use the device.

The first bottle was a 2005 Cakebread Benchland Select Cabernet Sauvignon.  At 5 years old, it was quite open aromatically with soft tannins.  It didn’t need a great deal of decanting so I poured it into the Wine Breather, let it sit for an hour or so and then poured the wine back into the bottle and served it from there.  Nice wine – good result.

The next bottle was a young 2008 Sea Smoke Southing Pinot Noir.  The wine was very limited aromatically and although it showed promise on the palate needed some serious encouragement to come out of its shell.  I decided to double decant it with the Wine Breather and then taste it.  It seemed to help a little but I thought it could still use more decanting so I did another pass through the device and then back into the bottle.  A quadruple decant!  The wine was still pretty bashful and tight aromatically but its flavors were more apparent on the palate and its finish was impressive.

The third and final bottle was a 2006 Leonetti Merlot from Washington state.  This wine presented a unique challenge in that it had silty sediment in the bottle.  However, it was quite Bordeaux-like in style (graphite and tar on top of powerful fruit) so I thought it would be a good idea to run it through the Wine Breather.  It ended up jostling the fine sediment quite a bit and each glass was quite murky.  This particular style of wine would be better served by traditional decanting for the purpose of letting the sediment fall to the bottom of the device and gently pouring off wine from the top.  Lesson learned, but this an objection many will raise about wine accessories that involved inverting the bottle for optimal effectiveness.

Blind Tasting

I’m a firm believer in using blind tasting to assess the effectiveness of products like these.  What I’m looking for when tasting is more pronounced aromatics (as opposed to being closed), rounder flavors (as opposed to being sharp), and a smoother finish.

The first test I did was a head to head blind tasting of a glass of wine that was poured right out of the bottle vs. one that went through the Menu Wine Breather.  For this test I used a 2007 Brancaia Toscana Tre – a well regarded quality-price-ratio favorite that seems to catch a lot of comments on CellarTracker that it needs air.  I couldn’t tell the difference between the glass passed through the Menu and the one that was not.  Tie.

I thought – hmm.  I need to create a situation where there is a control sample (pop ‘n pour) and a should-be-good sample (decanted a couple of hours in a traditional decanter) and then see how the Menu does compared to these other two.  For this test I cracked open a bottle of 2006 Produttori Barbaresco – young for a Barabresco – and invited a friend over.  I then poured the wine 3 ways for him and vice versa.

We both preferred the decanted wine over the pop ‘n pour wine however we disagreed on whether the Menu was better or worse than the other two wines.  My result:

1st: Menu
2nd: Decanter
3rd: Pop ‘n Pour

My friend’s result:

1st: Decanter
2nd: Pop ‘n Pour
3rd: Menu

Hmm – where to go from here?  I did another 3-way test myself with a 2008 75 Wine Company “The Sum” – fairly big, bold and young Napa Cabernet.  The result:

1st: Decanter
2nd: Menu
3rd: Pop ‘n Pour

Conclusion: For me, the Menu performed well in blind tasting overall.  It performed as good or better than pop ‘n pour in each test -and- it produced similar results to a 2-hour decant in 2 out of 3 tests.  I like the way it can quickly aerate an entire bottle of wine, and if I feel like a wine could benefit from more air it’s easy to run it through the device multiple times back and forth between the bottle and the Menu Wine Breather.

Strengths:

  • Provides an easy way to double-decant a bottle of wine
  • Can achieve aeration results similar to a decanter in a fraction of the time
  • Easy to decant multiple times quickly for accelerated aeration
  • Relatively compact for a full-size decanter
  • Modern “chemistry lab” styling

Weaknesses:

  • Works best when decanting an entire bottle – not so well for single pours
  • Operates based on inversion which potentially stirs up sediment in some wines

Overall Result:

WWP: 4/5 Stars (recommended with some reservations)

Windows Ill-Suited to Touchscreens, New Tablets Show

Most of the tablets released in 2011 will be Android-based, but a few stalwarts are sticking with Windows. We recently got a closer look at two tablets shown off in Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer’s CES 2011 keynote: The Acer Iconia and the Asus Eee Slate EP121. Together, they show the potential — and the limitations — of a Windows-based tablet strategy.

Flyde is a super-fast retro racing Time Waster

    flyde

I liked Flyde from the moment I laid eyes on it. It reminded me of an anciet DOS game I used to play as a kid, where you had to race around in 3D and jump platforms while the level rushes by. [I totally played that game too -- anyone remember the name?! -Ed]

In Flyde there’s no jumping per se: you control a white triangle that drives on or flies over a track made out of squares. There are colorful squares and black squares. The black squares are actually “holes” – when you drive over them, you fall into the abyss of space and die.

But it gets a little more complicated than just “not driving over the black squares”. Instead of only one track, you have two tracks. When you drive over a square in the color of the other track, you switch tracks! The second track is above you, so when you switch, you’re actually flying upside-down.

To keep from driving over the black squares, you have to continuously switch from track to track by touching the colorful squares. You’re going pretty fast so navigating between those evil black squares and switching tracks just at the right moment is pretty challenging, and also a lot of fun.

The soundtrack consists of a robot with an attitude problem, but it also tells you how many points you’ve accumulated. This, along with nice electronic background music, makes Flyde a truly engaging time waster, even if you’re not into retro gaming.

Oh, and don’t judge me by the score in the screenshot. My top score is actually 12,610 – what’s yours?

[Update: The old DOS game is called SkyRoads. Thanks, TnS! Awesome commenting there.]

As a member of the media, I was lucky enough to get my hands on a Nexus S running Android 2.3 “Gingerbread” a few weeks ago. It’s great, easily the best version of Android yet. I hope one day soon you all get to try it out. But the likelihood of that is pathetically small. In fact, don’t be surprised if Android 3.0 “Honeycomb” is out before most of you even get a chance to use Gingerbread ? maybe even for phones as well as tablets. With the iPhone, it’s a much different story. The likelihood that you are already running the latest version of the iOS software is much, much higher. In fact, it’s something around 90 percent, if some numbers shared by the CEO of Bump are to be believed.

Kongregate’s Snake is an utterly classic low-fi Time Waster

    snake

If you’re looking for a groundbreaking time-waster, something you’ve never ever played before, a new concept in gaming – this post is not for you. But if you enjoy the odd bit of classic retro gaming, Kongregate’s bare-bones implementation of Snake might be right up your alley.

What is there to say, really? You’re a snake. I mean, you start life as a single chunky pixel, but as soon as you eat the red pixel, you grow. And then another pixel appears, you eat it, and grow some more.

If you’ve ever owned a Nokia phone, chances are it came with Snake built-in. The newer phones (even the crappier S60 models) come with a souped-up version of Snake, all 3d-looking, with the snake eating actual apples. This version is much more reminiscent of the older Snake version, which was strictly 2d. It doesn’t have any sound effects, but it’s super responsive, and very addictive. The reason for the low score on the screenshot isn’t that I didn’t play – it’s that I played and played and played, each time thinking “this will be the one!” until I eventually realized if I don’t take the screenshot and write it up now, I’ll just end up playing all evening long. So there. Now, how much did you score?

Deal: $25 for $50 at JJ Buckley via Corkd

Group buying seems to be all the rage lately, and now Corkd is getting in on dishing out the deals.  They’re offering a $50 JJ Buckley gift card for $25.  Click here to visit Corkd.com and check out the terms of the deal.

Unfortunately, JJ Buckley cannot and does not ship to Massachusetts.  You’ll have to ship to a neighboring state to take advantage of this deal (or give the gift card to someone who lives in a state they do ship wine to).  I can vouch for them being a reputable retailer as I’ve ordered from them in the past and had wines shipped to other states.  The deals they offer are pretty incredible, and this deal makes those deals even sweeter.

When you’re placing your order be sure to decline the $1.00 insurance and select “Deliver Gift Card via Email”:

It just occurred to me as I was writing this up how cool this deal is.  Why?  Because Gary Vaynerchuk owns Corkd.  And as a wine retailer (Wine Library and Cinderella Wine) he’s effectively a direct competitor to JJ Buckley.  Yet, he’s allowing this deal to go through to promote another wine retailer.  My guess as to why he’d do this?  Because he loves the idea of pushing the retail envelope with a deal like this -and- he wants to see Corkd make a play as a wine deal hub.  Pretty cool.

How to use names instead of cell addresses in Microsoft Excel

      Excel

This week’s series of tips will be focusing on handy little features for Microsoft Excel and Word. To see the previous tips, check our Tips index.

By default, Excel uses cell references in formulas, which results in formulas that look like D5/20 (Meaning, divide the contents of cell D5 by 20). This is fine as long as your formulas are very simple. If you start pulling in data from multiple cells and using many complex formulas in a single spreadsheet, however, it becomes increasingly difficult to remember what each cell address means.

That’s where named ranges come in handy. As the name implies, these are names you can give ranges of cells — but a range can also be a single cell! So rather than having a formula read D5/20, you could have it read CostOfLiving/20. “CostOfLiving” is actually a named range consisting of one single cell.

This all sounds quite complex, but once you name your first cell you’ll see how simple it is. To do this, simply:

      • Select the cell you wish to name.
      • Click the Name Box. This is the text box to the left of the formula bar – it should contain your cell’s current address (say, H12).
      • Type in whatever name you wish to use for this cell (say, “MonthlyExpenses”). It must not contain spaces.
      • That’s it! You can now use this name in all of your formulas instead of the cell’s address.

Our Wine of the Year: An Interview with Claudia Cigliuti

      Owner and Winemaker Renato Cigliuti

Yesterday, I announced the 2005 Cigliuti Barbaresco Serraboella as the 2010 Wellesley Wine Press wine of the year.  In prior years I’d named domestic Pinot Noirs as my wine of the year so it wasn’t too difficult to track down winery representatives to answer a few questions.  However, this year’s winner comes from the Piedmont region in Italy.  Luckily it wasn’t difficult to reach Renato Cigliuti’s daughter Claudia for a response to these questions:

Q: I’ve heard there are “traditionalist” and “modernist” style producers in Barbaresco.  Does that terminology exist in Italy?  If so, which camp does Cigliuti fall within?  If not, could you describe your winemaking style?

Cigliuti: The “modernist” and “traditionalist” style are not very popular any more in Italy, like in the past…in the 90′s. In our opinion the most important thing to make a great wine is to have the best quality grapes and a good balance in oak.

Q: I’ve enjoyed both your Vigne Erte and Serraboella Barbaresco wines.  They’re both such powerful and pure expressions of Barbaresco.  Could you describe the differences in site and winemaking style between these two wines?

Cigliuti: The main difference between Barbaresco Vigne Erte and Serraboella is due to the age of the vines.  In the Vigne Erte the vines are about 10 years old while in Serraboella the age of the vines is from 25 to 55 years old.  The old vines give more complexity, intensity, structure and length to the wine but both of them reflect very well the character of the terrain where they come from.

In fact Vigne Erte is located on the cru of Bricco di Neive (350 meters above sea level) and faces Southwest with sandy and calcareous soil. Serraboella is located on the cru of Serraboella (350 meters above sea level) faces Southwest with chalky soil.

The winemaking style between Vigne Erte and Serraboella is almost the same, very balanced in oak.  They are aged for about 25 months in 2000 Lt Slavonian oak casks, only a small percentage of Serraboella is also aged in French oak barriques and tonneaux.

Q: What would you say is the best time of year for an American to visit Piedmont wineries?

Cigliuti: In our opinion the best period to visit Piedmont wineries is beginning of September because at that time it is possible to understand and evaluate the quality of the wines from the grapes left in the vineyards. It is very important to see the way of managing the vineyards and the yields we leave to have a good quality wine. Also October is interesting because the vineyards are very colourfull and you can also smell the parfums of the fermentation in the cellar.

Q: Do you offer winery visits and tastings with an appointment scheduled via E-mail?  If so, what should we expect on a visit to Cigliuti?

Cigliuti: We accept visits by appointment (because only the family is involved in all kind of  works of the estate) and it’s always a pleasure to receive visitors and show our philosophy of making wines. They should expect a simple visit to a very small estate (7 Hectares) where the family will receive them and show all the process of making wine starting from the vineyards to enjoying a glass of wine together. Cheers!

My thanks to Claudia Cigliuti for her kind and thoughtful response to my questions, and congratulations to Cigliuti on their outstanding wines.

I hope you enjoyed reading my top 25 list as much as I enjoyed writing it.

Zombie Bites is a gory retro platformer — Time Waster

      zombiebites

So, you’re a zombie. And you’re hungry, and you’re all pixelated. You’re going to stay pixelated and retro-looking, at least on this game. But you don’t have to stay hungry: In Zombie Bites, you run around the level, finding humans. As soon as you touch a human and press SPACE, you attack. Your energy bar fills up a bit, but not so much. You must keep running and jumping in search of more humans you can eat.

“What’s the problem?”, I hear you say, “That screenshot is full of humans”. No it’s not – those are zombies! As we’ve all learned in science class, once a zombie bites a human, the human turns into a zombie. And that’s exactly what happens in Zombie Bites, so you find yourself running around the level searching for the few remaining humans amongst a growing horde of zombies, which are busy biting those same humans you’re trying to catch. Hectic!

It’s not exactly an epic quest, but it’s a cute game, especially if you’re into zombies. The 8-bit style makes the gore seem kind of fetching, really.

Google defends H.264 removal from Chrome, says WebM plug-ins coming to Safari and IE9

Google renewed a heated discussion when it said it was dropping H.264 support from Chrome’s HTML5 video tag last week, but it seems the company’s ready and willing to push its WebM alternative video format hard — not only is hardware decoder IP now available for the VP8 codec, but the project team is presently readying WebM plug-ins for Safari and Internet Explorer 9, neither of which include it themselves. As to the little matter of whether any of this is the right move for the web at large, we’ll paraphrase what Google had to say for itself: H.264 licenses cost money; Firefox and Opera don’t support H.264 either; and big companies like Google are helping the little guy by championing this open alternative. We have to say, the eternal optimist in us is cheering them on. Oh, and the linguist in us, too. Read Google’s own words at our source link, and decide for yourself.

Sorami-skydrive for Android connects to your Windows Live cloud storage for free

SkyDrive is a fantastic cloud storage option that many people still don’t know about. With 25GB of free space for your synced files, Hotmail attachments, and Office Web docs, it’s worth signing up for an account (if you don’t already have a Windows Live passport). What’s even better is that SkyDrive storage can be accessed by other apps — like sorami-skydrive for Android.

Install the app, enter your credentials, then tap the back button, and you’ve got full access to your SkyDrive storage. Not only can sorami download files, but the app can upload files to SkyDrive from your Android device. You can also create new folders, and the home button quickly returns you to the top level of your SkyDrive folders.

Sorami-skydrive is currently in beta, so expect a few bumps along the way. After creating a new folder, for example, the app became stuck on a ‘loading’ alert and I had to kill the task. The developer is very responsive to bug reports, however, and sorami-skydrive is improving at a steady pace.

Blow Things Up is a fun, easy physics Time Waster

      blowthingsup

Time-wasters can sometimes be frustrating; after all, when I just want to distract myself for a few minutes, I’m not really looking for something that’s going to make me feel like I’m not good enough. That’s what work is for, right?

Blow Things Up is a nice game, because you will be good at it. You get a number of bombs which you can plant anywhere on the screen, even midair. Once you put a bomb in place, it doesn’t shift, roll, move, or do anything suspicious until you hit Space – at which point it does what a bomb should, which is explode.

When the bomb explodes, it shifts things around; ideally, it shifts the “bad guys” off the screen. By “bad guys” I mean those cute red cyclops you can see at the top and the middle of the screenshot. The yellow cyclops are the “good guys”, and if you push them off the screen, you lose.

It took me about 3-4 minutes to reach level 22; it was virtually effortless, which is just what I needed right now. Quite a fun little game.

HTC 7 Pro now available on O2 Germany, ?22 monthly or ?599 up front

Not that we had any reason to doubt O2 Germany’s Twitter account, but a formal press release does help ease our few concerns. The HTC 7 Pro is now official on the European carrier for the asking price of €29 down and 24 months of €22.50. If you want to rip the proverbial band-aid off faster, it’s also available for a €599 flat fee — both of those without SIM lock. The rest of the world? Google’s use of HTML5-powered drag-and-drop in Gmail and Google Docs has made file management via its Web interfaces much easier. Now, the same feature is live on YouTube, enabling users to upload videos by simply dragging a clip from a desktop folder and placing into the dropzone on the YouTube upload page.

As is the case with Docs and Gmail, you’ll need to be using a compatible browser to be able to use drag-and-drop uploading. Currently, only Google Chrome and Firefox are supported.

Nokia X7 press shot emerges with AT&T branding, subsidized hopes and dreams (update: canceled)

Is AT&T seriously gearing up to sell a subsidized Nokia smartphone once again in the US of A? Given the company’s long absence from being included in any US carrier’s smartphone section, it still feels more like a dream than an impending reality, but that image above is certainly hard to ignore. According to Pocketnow‘s sources, the first press images of the Nokia X7 are legitimate, and the AT&T branding isn’t by accident. Purportedly, the Symbian^3-based phone will be hitting Ma Bell’s shops as early as this month, bringing along an eight megapixel camera (with dual-flash), four speaker grilles (two of which have drivers underneath) and a ClearBlack display. Hit the source link for a look at the rear.

Update: Our dreams have been dashed by Pocketnow, who says its original source was out of date — AT&T had apparently planned to stock the X7 under the name “Nokia Journey” in time for a Mobile World Congress launch, but those plans have reportedly been canceled by AT&T itself.

      [Thanks, Ben E.]

In the good old days of tech media, Microsoft led the charge in impossibly convoluted contortions around self-interested maneuvers. Today Google has taken over that role. And the new Microsoft stands as a pale shadow of itself, fighting tooth and nail to rescue defeat from the jaws of victory. With Steve Ballmer as Donald Trump: Nice job, Bob. You?re fired. As we found out on today?s Gillmor Gang, Google is being called on a transparent bluff. Namely, that yanking H.264 from Chrome is all about the open Web. That WebM will stop Apple from eating the heart out of Android and Chrome and maybe YouTube. Already Google is re-explaining the move. But not soon enough to stop Danny Sullivan, Robert Scoble, Kevin Marks, John Taschek and me from having some fun on the Gang this week. Kudos to Microsoft and Google for their hard work this week. Google Search has long offered suggestions when it thinks you may have entered a word (or words) incorrectly. That feature has also been available in Gmail as part of Apps Search — a Gmail Labs experiment. Now, however, the switch has been flipped and suggestions are now offered whenever you perform a search.

It’s nice to see that Google is working to enhance Gmail search, though as Alex Chitu points out at Google OS, there’s still plenty of room for improvement. In particular, we’d like to see attachment indexing added.

The Future of Wine Criticism Gets Clearer

It’s been interesting watching the reaction to James Suckling’s retirement from the Wine Spectator announced a couple weeks ago (note: I wrote this post 11 days ago but only posting it now due to some issues with my blog software). F-Secure named Windows antivirus product of the year by AV-Comparatives

AV-Comparatives spends all year evaluating antivirus applications, and their recommendations are always worth paying attention to. The company’s 2010 summary report has been posted, and F-Secure has been declared the top Windows antivirus program.

AV-Comparatives also states that it was extremely difficult to choose a winner this year — which is a good thing, because it means that security software vendors are stepping up their game. Several programs posted very strong results in 2010. Both Avira and F-Secure had advanced+ ratings across the board, and Symantec’s Norton Antivirus 2011 missed a perfect chart by a single category. F-Secure also registered the least false positives, and tied with Norton for detection of previously unknown malware — a critical metric with today’s rapidly-changing threat landscape.

F-Secure was ultimately chosen as the winner because it “had made the most progress relative to last year.” AV-Comparatives used that criteria as the tie-breaker in order to “motivate all manufacturers to keep improving their products.”

      Handbrake-powered VidCoder gets a native 64-bit version

A while back, VidCoder — the Windows video disc ripping program — added support for Blu-ray discs. With Handbrake’s engine under the hood, VidCoder offers an easy-to-use interface and simple batch processing of your video files. With the release of version 0.8, there’s also now a native 64-bit version for those of you running Windows x64. A number of stability tweaks have also been introduced.

As Baz pointed out in our comments last time, VidCoder is particular useful on netbooks. If you’ve got a 1024×600 screen, Handbrake may not even launch for you — but VidCoder will fire up just fine. Take the new 64-bit version for a spin, and share your thoughts in the comments.

Enable Zune HD sync support for Mac in Windows Phone 7 Connector

There are likely a great deal more users who connect an iPod to a Windows machine, but if you’re the inverse of that situation — with a Zune HD you want to connect to a Mac — you haven’t had a first-party option until now. The Windows Phone 7 Connector, which has been available in beta since late 2010, has secretly been packing Zune HD support.

If you happen to own both a Mac and a Zune HD, just head over to Microsoft and download the Windows Phone 7 Connector. Once it’s installed, you’ll need to execute a command from Terminal to enable Zune HD sync support. Head over to Zuneboards for the command line particulars.

Google Docs now lets you stream video files you upload

Google has just snuck a rather slick feature into Docs which you might not have noticed. You could already play audio files you had uploaded to your Google Docs storage, but now you can play video files as well. Google’s player supports a number of different formats, including its own WebM/VP8, MPEG4, 3GP, MOV, AVI, MPEG, FLV (Flash video), and WMV (Windows Media). The heavy lifting is performed by YouTube’s video player, and it supports files up to 1GB in size.

Extra Docs storage is dirt cheap, so this could be a terrific way to enjoy your favorite videos (and music) from a private stash in the cloud. It also wouldn’t be a surprise to see Google integrate some fancy playback options into Android and Chrome OS. All we need now is a good desktop-to-docs sync program from Mountain View…

Geohot wins round one against Sony (kinda) — judge declines to rule on SCEA restraining order (updated)

By now we all know that Sony filed a lawsuit against Geohot and fail0verflow for their distribution of PS3 jailbreak firmware and asked the court for a temporary restraining order (TRO) to stop said distribution of the offending code. Well, according to Geohot, the court denied declined to rule on Sony’s motion earlier today. Geohot has reposted the code online, so it seems safe to say that the TRO is back for now, and the jailbreak can once again roam the internet unencumbered by any legal decrees. The decision, while favorable to the defendants, has little effect on the outcome of the litigation itself, so Hotz and company aren’t out of the woods just yet. We’ll keep you posted on the status of the order, and will also watch as the case progresses for the real fireworks to start.

Update: Looks like we jumped the gun and got the story a little wrong, but thanks to our readers we’ve discovered that the judge declined to rule on the TRO. Instead she tabled the TRO issue because she was not satisfied that the Northern District of California has jurisdiction to rule on the matter because Geohot hacked the PS3 in New Jersey.

CyanogenMod 6 port for the Motorola Milestone now stable

      Motorola Milestone

After an amazing amount of hard work, hard working hackers have built a stable Froyo custom ROM for the Motorola Milestone.  It’s a port of CyanogenMod 6, and thanks to the new kernel ripped out of a ROM leaked from Brazilian carrier Vivo, there are no issues with wake time or signal.  I salute everyone involved in this work, and while not a Milestone user myself, I tip my hat and my glass to you all.  For any Milestone users looking for more information, see the source link, and enjoy.

I’m sure many are asking, "Why is this such big news, and why did it take so long?"  The Milestone was Motorola’s first foray into the horrible and unfriendly practice of encrypting the bootloader, making third party ROMs dependent on software from Motorola.  The fact that a small group of users was able to circumvent the protection scheme tells us that it was a pretty damn silly idea to begin with.  If the front door is locked, people will find a way to use the window.  Developers who stuck with the Milestone through all this nonsense deserve our admiration and respect. [DoShaska.net] Thanks, Bassem!

Cocoon hands on: the one-shot solution to private and secure Firefox browsing

      Cocoon

A lot has been said about safe, secure surfing in recent months. Firesheep brought the necessity for HTTPS (and WPA-encrypted WLAN) into the limelight, and the Gawker Media breach reminded all of us that no one is safe.

The truth is, if you want to stay secure on the Web, you have to take a proactive stance. You need to install LastPass or KeePass, and using HTTPSEverywhere is a very good idea too. A good anti-virus suite like Microsoft Security Essentials is a necessity, and get into the habit of regularly scanning with Malwarebytes.

Alternatively, you can scrap everything and just use Cocoon, a service that proposes to solve all of your privacy and security problems in one fell swoop. There is a 45-day free trial, and it requires Firefox 3.6.13. I suggest you install it, and then read on!

Hotmail missing email problem was caused by automated test malfunction

hotmail missing email Recently, several thousand users began reporting a problem with their Hotmail inboxes. Messages — and sometimes entire folders — had vanished from their Inboxes. Microsoft managed to restore everything in five days, but what exactly went wrong? And what — if anything — were they doing to make sure something like this didn’t happen again?

The Hotmail team has since posted an explanation. As part of their regular monitoring and maintenance, Hotmail runs certain automated test scripts — one of which got a bit carried away. Normally the script manipulates a set of test accounts created by the Hotmail team. This time, however, it accidentally messed with the directory information of up to 17,000 users.

The blog post points out that no email messages or folders were ever actually deleted — Hotmail simply couldn’t associate those users with their inboxes. The problem was protracted because Hotmail’s support ticketing system didn’t place a high priority on initial reports since there were so few, and because this wasn’t a previously-known problem.

To make sure this situation doesn’t occur again, Microsoft has tweaked its scripts and the ticketing system. Now, when multiple users report data loss, their tickets will automatically be tagged as high priority and demand immediate attention. Microsoft has also pledged to update its feedback system in order to improve communication with users.

Access your Google Chrome bookmarks from the right-click context menu

Last week we shared a Google Chrome extension with you that adds installed apps to your right-click context menu. It’s a very welcome enhancement, since you normally need to hit Chrome’s new tab page to launch a Chrome Web app. You know what would fit nicely right below apps in Chrome’s right-click menu? Access to your bookmarks, of course!

And as you can see in the screenshot, there’s an extension that does a nice job of integrating the contents of your bookmarks bar. Install “Bookmark list in context menu” and you’ve got two-click access to your favorite sites. It’s a nice alternative to the horizontal bookmark bar, especially on smaller screens where every pixel counts. As its author points out, it’s also a handy way to open bookmarks in full screen mode — when there are no toolbars to click on.

Wine 1.3.11 released, improves JavaScript performance and localization, fixes MS Hearts bug

Wine HQ logoThe development version of Wine 1.3 has just been released, bringing with it a ton of bug fixes, improved JavaScript performance, and — at long last — GNU gettext support, making localization and translation a whole lot easier.

For many Linux users, though, Wine 1.3.11 will be known as the build that finally fixed MS Hearts, which has been broken under Wine since 2006. Of course, there is a Hearts clone, but it just isn’t the same. The improved JavaScript performance means that JavaScript-heavy pages should run a bit better in Internet Explorer — though why a Linux user would use Internet Explorer is truly a puzzler.

Binary packages for Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora and other major distros should be available; but if not, you can always build from source.

Google Tasks top 5 user-requested features announced

A while back, Google asked users of Google Tasks to submit their most wanted features. The polls have closed, so to speak, and Google has announced the top five (in no specific order):

      • a Tasks API and synchronization
      • reminders and notifications
      • recurring tasks
      • shareable task lists
      • visual distinction for overdue tasks

Perhaps more importantly than merely announcing the top picks is the fact that associate product manager David Tattersall states that Google is getting ready to build these new features into Tasks. Tattersall doesn’t offer a timetable, only stating that changes to Tasks will arrive “throughout the year.”

Dell Adamo now even cheaper, slightly less powerful

It looks like Dell isn’t quite sure what to do with Adamo. First, the MacBook Air competitor was bumped from Dell’s marketing roster, then it was reduced from $999 to $899, and now it’s got a price tag of $799. Unfortunately, the price isn’t all Dell is slashing: last October the Adamo was sporting a 2.1GHz Core 2 Duo SL9600 processor and 4GB of DDR3-800 memory, now we’re told it’s functioning on a 1.4GHz Core Duo 2 SU9400 and 2GB of DDR3-800 (with no upgrade option that we can find). Everything else is basically the same for the little guy, and Dell’s Adamo page still offers the suggestion, “Prepare to Fall in Love,” but we’re not entirely sure we’re the ones who need convincing.

Vudu movie streaming app is (not) live on the Boxee Box – update

There’s no official confirmation from Boxee’s blog or Twitter account yet, but owners of its Box are experiencing a fully activated Vudu app with the SD, HD, HDX and 3D streams the service is famous for. The only glitches reported so far seem to have been cleared up by just restarting the device so hopefully whatever delayed its launch past the planned 2010 window is entirely resolved. There’s no firmware update needed, so give it a shot if you haven’t already, especially since Vudu’s still offering a free flick for all new signups. With Netflix streaming still an unreachable dream for its Box (unless one also happens to own practically any other media streaming device on the market) we hope the company rewards its developers with a long, long break of at least five minutes before sending them back to work on our Watch Instantly access.

      [Thanks, Parris]

Update: VP of Marketing Andrew Kippen has let us know that while the app was released to a few hundred testers “by mistake” it’s been taken down so they can finish testing before it is eventually released “with much fanfare.” Sorry Boxee devs, no five minute break for you today!

Hailee Steinfeld Blames ‘Bad Timing’ For Lea Michele Encounter

‘Everything is totally fine,’ breakout ‘True Grit’ actress assures MTV News at Critics’ Choice Movie Awards.

Before Hailee Steinfeld took the stage at the 16th annual Critics’ Choice Movie Awards on Friday evening (January 14) to collect her prize in the Best Young Actor/Actress category, she chatted with MTV News about a story aside from her breakout performance in “True Grit.”

A few weeks ago, Steinfeld told J-14 magazine that “Glee” star Lea Michele had snubbed her during an encounter, going so far as to make her cry. When we caught up with her, we had to get to the bottom of the story.

“When I auditioned for ‘True Grit,’ I was on the Paramount lot, and that’s where they film ‘Glee,’ and I saw her after my audition and I was wearing, like, 1800 [period clothing],” Steinfeld recalled, adding, “It was so embarrassing.”

The 14-year-old breakout actress went on to say, “I saw her, and I went up to ask her for an autograph, and it was just really bad timing, and I was so embarrassed because of what I was wearing. The only thoughts that were going through my head were, ‘Oh my God, Lea Michele thinks I’m a total freak.’ ”

Still, Steinfeld is keeping a positive attitude about the whole thing, assuring fans, “Everything is totally fine.”

Since then, the story has been reported as a “misunderstanding” and that it was actually a PA, not Michele (who had another snub story go viral, when it was reported that she was openly rude to photographer Patrick McMullen at 2010′s Time 100 event), who had turned Steinfeld away.

Nevertheless, the “Glee” star (who ultimately apologized to McMullen via Twitter) released a statement to GossipCop that read, “I heard Hailee was upset and feel terrible. The Glee schedule is so jam-packed that the PA probably pulled me so that I wouldn’t be late to set. I never meant to hurt her feelings. She’s an extraordinary talent and I look forward to meeting her one day.”

Becoming a Different Kind of Wine Wonk

Inside the Washington D.C. beltway, politicians and those that work for politicians are often cast as, “Policy wonks” based on a capacity or interest in teasing out the detail in issues whilst actually reading bills and the stacks of briefs that are part and parcel with the job.  Meanwhile, the wine world, a haven for wonkiness of the pleasurable sort (is that Brett?), may soon have a need for a broad number of issue driven wonks, as well.

Last week, in my final post for 2010, I indicated that I thought there were two real issues that I needed to dive into based on where trends in the wine world were going:

      Fine wine auctions
      HR 5034

If given the opportunity to reflect for just a moment, I might amend, “HR 5034” to the general catchall, “Wine law.”

The reason having a deeper understanding of wine law is important to me, and should be important to you, is despite the Supreme Court ruling in Granholm vs. Heald in 2005, wine enthusiasts still find their wine rights in the cross hairs of profit motive-based interests from people that would like to continue curtailing free trade.

      image

This, as they say, is a developing situation in 2011.

While I know most people reading this site find the idea of learning and understanding wine law about as interesting as dinner in Juarez, Mexico, as stultifying as a filibuster on C-SPAN and as painful as watching the chick on Bitchin’ Kitchen on the Cooking Channel (who is also the headliner at ZAP this year, natch), it seems like a no-brainer need to me.

Wine consumers must be able to match and exceed the rigor of the opposition (those that oppose consumer wine rights).  This is particularly important because at this point wine consumers are primitively organized and completely under-financed to represent their own voice.  Knowledge is the first place to start.

At some point, wine enthusiasts need to get pissed like a tea bagger collecting Social Security with a mother on Medicare while opposing universal healthcare.  Know what I mean?  It doesn’t all have to make sense, but enough does.  Think Matlock and not Tom Cruise in A Few Good Men.

And, if nothing else, knowing the gambit in Chapter 3 of the Art of War (the source of strength is unity, not size) should bolster confidence for a deeper dive into the wine law knowledge dive.

Enough smart people are enough … but right now there aren’t enough.

That said, whenever I seek out an understanding on a subject I don’t know enough about, I typically read, read some more, talk, and then read some more.  If I can blithely encapsulate a subject into an elevator pitch for my wife and talk about the same subject for 20 minutes with my wine club, I know I’m in good shape.

To make your wine law journey with me easier there are a number of wine law blogs that have emerged over the last year and I’ll start us off with a pidgin Latin saying to kick you in the butt: Illegitimi non carborundum (Don’t let the bastards wear you down).

Below are links to a couple of books to act as primers, the TTB site for ongoing reference and then the blogs for ongoing maintenance.

Sierra On-Line games hit iPad via web app, those old enough to remember them rejoice

You may or may not be old enough to remember Sierra On-Line, makers of such fine games as Leisure Suit Larry, the King’s Quest, and Police Quest, but none of that matters anymore. Thanks to the folks over at Sarien, you now have access to these glorious titles via your iPad‘s web browser. The entire catalog has been ported over, and the games which were previously available via the web only are now there on your Apple tablet! The whole shebang is now hosted on Amazon‘s content distribution network, and the games have been extensively tweaked for that multitouch interface. Sarien hasn’t apparently been issued a cease and desist from Activision — owners of the catalog — yet, so get these free gems of yesteryear while you can.

Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal will ship with 2D version of Unity for older and weaker computers

      Ubuntu Unity 2D!

It’s amazing it took this long for Canonical to confirm, but it seems that Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal will ship with both a fancy, OpenGL-accelerated version of Unity, and a flatter, slightly more sedate 2D version for older, unaccelerated hardware. A couple more images of the 2D UI are available after the break.

Given the fact that one of the most common targets for Linux installations is on older, ‘reclaimed’ hardware, it would have been surprising if Ubuntu didn’t ship with a 2D window manager. Canonical’s Bill Filler also mentions that “many ARM platforms fall into this category,” though we’re not quite sure which ARM devices he has in mind. Most low-power devices are either netbooks or smartphones — and netbooks are Atom x86, not ARM (at least for now), and a lot of smartphones have hardware acceleration via OpenGL ES (and who puts Ubuntu on a smartphone, anyway?)

Basically, this is great news for people that want to put Ubuntu 11.04 on old laptops, netbooks and desktops with awful integrated graphics — or simply those that don’t like the 3D version of Unity! It’s also great news for those that virtualize their Ubuntu installations under VMWare or VirtualBox, both of which have a hard time with 3D acceleration.

[It seems, at the time of publishing, that Bill Filler's blog post has vanished. Maybe he was jumping the gun; or perhaps something else is afoot...]

Switched On: Making the call on Windows Phone 7

Each week Ross Rubin contributes Switched On, a column about consumer technology.

CES 2011 saw the debut of what could be the biggest challenge to the Wintel dominance of personal computing since Windows 95 cemented its position. The combination of the Android operating system on ARM processors — ARMdroid if you will — grabbed most of the attention in the emerging tablet category on products such as devices such as the Motorola Xoom and LG G-Slate. But it was also clear that manufacturers — unconstrained by Cupertinian notions of what operating system is best suited to what kind of device — are willing to take the combination in new directions that come much closer to the notebook form factor. A clear example of this was the ASUS Eee Pad Slider. If having the tablet thunder stolen from Microsoft wasn’t enough to make the company uncomfortable, clearly encroaching designs like this were.

And so, at Steve Ballmer’s keynote, the company announced that the next version of Windows will support not only x86 offerings from Intel and AMD – themselves moving closer to ARM-like system-on-chips – but ARM designs from companies such as Qualcomm and NVIDIA as well. Microsoft noted that the new chip support was requested by its partners, implying that PC companies want to take advantage of the long battery life and thin form factors enabled by ARM architectures, but also bring along Windows’ broad driver and software support. Microsoft clearly considers the tablet another PC, albeit one that Windows’ hardware and user interface layer needs to support better. However, in striking back at Android evolution, Microsoft risks collateral damage to its own mobile OS. Can Windows Phone 7 co-exist with a ARM-based version of the real thing?

Don’t worry: Facebook isn’t shutting down

This is just a quick note to say that, despite any rumors you may have heard over the weekend, Facebook is not shutting down. Mashable even went as far as to get a confirmation from Facebook’s Director of Corporate Communications!

It’s a little bit worrying just how seriously the hoax was taken. Remember, though, that the average Facebook pleb won’t know anything about its recent $50 billion valuation, or that it now has over 600 million users. It’s perfectly natural that we hysterically defend the most important thing in our life, too!

Three iPad dummy SKUs appear at Best Buy website

There’s not much to see here, folks, just a few listings on Best Buy’s website for Apple iPads that don’t currently exist. They could be the result of a database error, an employee prank, or even just wishful thinking. Still, between well-placed sources informing us that a super-high-resolution, SD-card bearing, dual-mode iPad 2 is on the way and a feeling of déjà vu, we can’t help but think there might be a rather exciting prize behind doors number one, two and three. Or perhaps just a Verizon iPad. We’re sure that would make someone’s day.

Lackluster sales on Chrome Web Store continue; are people ready to pay for browser-specific Web apps?

Chrome Web Store low salesAt the time of writing, the top paid app on the Chrome Web Store has 65 weekly installs. The top game fares a little better, with a few hundred weekly installs. After months of hype from Google and a delayed launch, those figures seem a little – how can I say this – weak?

The fact is, paid-for Web apps might be taking things just a little too far. If the Web has proven one thing, other than rule 34, it’s that surfers will always opt for the free option if there is one. That’s not to say that users won’t pay for Web apps, but in most cases Web apps are so similar to free websites that paying for them seems rather counterintuitive. It’s a bit like paying for brand-name toilet paper: it might feel a little softer, but ultimately it’s just a waste of money.

There seems to be a similar trend with smartphones, too: while games are selling well, many commercial apps that replicate basic, free, website-level functionality simply aren’t selling well. Take a look at the list of top paid iPhone apps, where there are only two non-games in the top 20. It sure looks like users aren’t willing to invest in non-essential, platform-specific apps.

Having said all that, it’s still very early days for the Chrome Web Store, and relatively few users even know of its existence. Later this year we should see Mozilla’s offering, too, and presumably it’ll be very easy to port Chrome Web apps to Firefox. Finally, there’s Chrome OS, an operating system that will only use websites and Web apps. If Chrome OS gains traction and Mozilla delivers on its Open Web Apps, mass adoption of Web apps will surely follow. Just a handful of big, paid-for apps from big names like Adobe and Microsoft would be more than enough to kick-start the Web as real platform for software development.

BlackBerry Storm 3 shows up again, tracking for September launch?

RIM’s mythical BlackBerry Storm 3 is one of those products that shows up every few months with just enough new information to have you believing that it’s real and it’s eventually coming before slithering back into the night, going totally radio-silent for another month or two. We’ve no doubt that the phone is real at this point, but considering the lukewarm reception the Storm 2 got, we’re surprised RIM hasn’t pushed harder to get the updated device to market — only thing we can figure is that the carrier partners keep sending it back for tweaks. Speaking of tweaks, BGR says that we can expect a phone with a 1.2GHz processor (same as the alleged Torch 2) along with a 3.7-inch WVGA display, 5 megapixel camera, dual-band WiFi with UMA support, mobile hotspot capability, and BlackBerry OS 6.1. Word has it there will be at least two versions released around the globe — codenamed Monaca and Monza — and it’s on track for a September release. That’s all well and good, though these specs aren’t going to blow anyone away as we approach Q4 ’11.

Children checking out vintage gadgets continues to be an enthralling experience to watch

The video we’ve embedded after the break has been around for a few weeks, but we simply couldn’t resist posting it. As you’ll see, it’s a video (in French, but with English subtitles) of children contemplating a ton of vintage gear including the Game Boy, a Colecovision cartridge, and several sizes and shapes of computer discs. Their reactions — especially if you were alive when most or all of these gadgets were the cutting edge — is pretty incredible. Like we said, the video (with some pretty clunky subtitles) is after the break.

Wikimedia reaches its $16 million goal, Wikipedia to remain ad-free

      Jimmy Wales

The foundation behind Wikipedia, Wikimedia, has reached its goal of $16 million in donations, more than doubling the $7.5 million raised in 2009. Over half a million people donated for an average donation of around $22.

The donations are for one purpose: to keep Wikipedia ad-free, and having reached its goal, Wikipedia remains the only top-10 site on the Web that is free of ads and funded entirely by donations. The best bit, though, is that even the whole donation process has a Wiki. You can see how they tested various slogans, and just how successful the “Jimmy appeal” was, compared to the other possible banners. Finally, if you’re really into this kind of thing, you can see a graph that documents the daily donations from 2007 through to the end of 2010.

In other news, Wikipedia will celebrate its 10th anniversary on January 15th, and if you want a piece of birthday cake, there are parties being held all over the world. Be aware that not all of the events are on the 15th, though!

Windows Phone 7 January update bringing copy-and-paste, additional minor improvements

While it doesn’t sound as though everything rumored to be rolled into the first Windows Phone 7 update, there will be a number of enhancements delivered this month. CEO Steve Ballmer didn’t get too specific during his keynote at CES 2011, saying only “Microsoft will release a series of Windows Phone 7 updates over the next few months, including adding the copy-and-paste feature and improving the phone’s performance when loading or switching between applications.”

Microsoft, however, has now posted an official “sneak peek” at what’s on the way. Copy-and-paste is perhaps the biggest addition, though faster application and game launch times will be a welcome improvement as well. Marketplace search has also been tweaked — tapping your phone’s search button post-update will allow you to search the specific category you’re currently browsing, rather than the entire Marketplace.

Bigger updates like in-app purchases, expanded APIs, Internet Explorer 9, and Silverlight support won’t happen until some time after Mobile World Congress 2011.

More music videos now playing on Android YouTube app, more pre-roll commercials, too

More music videos now playing on Android YouTube app, more pre-roll commercials, tooLet’s get the bad news out of the way first: pre-roll ads are coming to YouTube on Android in a big way. Big G is adding the digital speed bumps to “tens of thousands of YouTube partner videos” starting now, but it’s for a sort of good reason: Katy Perry. Well, her and a bunch of other music videos, all appearing in the YouTube 2.0 app on Android, with the initial batch provided by VEVO. Music videos will be identified by a note icon and, while you’re watching one, you can get artist info and quickly view other tracks that are available. Right now this is a feature only available on Android but, with Google happily extolling that it drove a 300 percent growth in mobile video viewership in 2010, we’re guessing it’ll be coming to other platforms soon enough.

Starr Labs AirPower, Missing Link adapters take MIDI into the wild world of wireless

Ah, MIDI. How we love thee. You’re older than dirt itself, but still totally relevant — something we could only hope to one day be. But now, it’s time to make a move. A move to a world where copper wires and insulated cabling aren’t necessary. A world where wireless rules. Create Digital Music has a new report out on two of the most prominent options when it comes to wireless MIDI, with the both of ‘em distributing bleeps and bloops over totally different airwaves. The Starr Labs AirPower relies on a proprietary 2.4GHz communications protocol, enabling MIDI guitarists to finally get their groove on without worry over cable ejections. ‘Course, with a $425 (upgrade) / $250 (MIDI-only) price tag, it’s far from being affordable, and that $250 dongle is needed in addition to the $425 adapter for any instrument not made by Starr. The Missing Link relies on traditional WiFi waves, enabling phones and tablets to easily tap into its potential. You’ll need to be aware that even the slightest bit of WiFi interference could ruin a live gig, but at just $150 (limited first run), it may be worth the risk. Head on past the break for a live demonstration of the latter, and tap that via for more dirt on the duo.

KDJ-One is a gigantic Game Boy with an audio workstation inside

Cyberstep’s KDJ-One, a portable digital audio workstation currently in prototype mode, is a noisy little wrinkle in time. While we’re fairly certain it will never see the light of day in your local Guitar Center, we really do want to wish it the best. It combines the aesthetics of a few of our very favorite things: the D-pad, button layout, and chunkiness instantly reminded us of the original DMG Game Boy. The keypad on bottom looks a lot like a tweaked version of a Roland TB-303. And the software inside — pure MeeGo — reminds us of a Tungsten-era Palm device crossed with a laptop from 1999. (But in a really good way!)

A five-inch resistive touchscreen — complete with stylus — sits on top of an Atom E640 CPU, 512MB of RAM, a 4GB SSD drive, and a pair of 2000mAh batteries. Oh, and it’s got a rumble pack on the backside: Cyberstep assures us the QW Vibration System adds “a whole new element of force feedback to your music production experience.” The sampler / looper / sequencer production software itself seems super-basic and pretty fun, although we could probably squeeze a lot more production flexibility out of a $300 netbook. But just look at that dude and tell us you don’t want to squeeze its little white cheeks. Yeah, exactly. Video after the jump.

So Much For Standards, Google Says WebM Plugins Coming Soon For Safari And IE9

We’ve already done a full breakdown of Google’s clarification of their H.264 pullout today. But buried in their post is another interesting nugget worth highlighting by itself: WebM plugins are coming shortly for Safari and IE9. Yes, plugins. This is both humorous and terrifying on a few levels. First and formost, the point of all of this H.264/WebM stuff is so that the web can shift to an HTML5 video standard going forward. Of course, since neither IE nor Safari will support Google’s, Mozilla’s, and Opera’s preferred codec for that standard, we’re right back to plugin land! Why don’t we just call WebM, Flash 2.0?

Freaky Cows is an aquatic-themed bovine Time Waster

      freakycows

As you may know, cows do not float. They tend to be heavier than water, so they sink. Not being a creature of the sea, when a cow drowns, it ceases to live. So if you like cows and encounter a bunch of cows that are on the verge of drowning, you might be moved to save them –and that’s pretty much the premise of Freaky Cows.

You get a queue of objects and when you click the screen, the next object appears. The first thing on every level is some sort of a floating platform – it may be a long plank, or a bunch of logs loosely bunched together (these can float apart, as you can see in the screenshot).

Once the first floating object is in the water, the next click usually drops a cow on it, and it happily floats. Of course, saving just one cow isn’t enough. Cows are social creatures, so you have to save the whole herd. When you drop the next cow on the floating plank, it changes the balance and causes the plank to sink deeper into the water. If you’re not careful, the whole plank might tip over — and there go the cows! You may receive extra planks later on, which you can use to bolster up your platform.

There are bulls, too, and a bull weighs four times as much as a cow — so you need to be extra-careful with them. Happily, though, you don’t have to save every cow. I mean, every cow is precious, but you can usually get away with saving only nine out of twelve or so and still pass the level.

Freaky Cows is highly recommended, and I greatly enjoyed the frantic mooing in the soundtrack.

Windows 7 SP1 download due today, says Microsoft Technet post

We reported earlier that the release of Windows 7 Service Pack 1 could be coming soon. Its impending arrival seemed to be heralded by the availability of a prerequisite installer update delivered recently via Windows Update. Now, however, there’s an indication that we could be just hours away from being able to download Windows 7 SP1.

A Microsoft Technet blog — albeit a Russian one we’ve had to run through translation sites — indicates that “pack will be publicly available tomorrow.” The post discusses virtualization improvements in Windows 7 SP1 and Server 2008 R2 SP1 and was published January 13, 2011. If the author’s statement is accurate, that would definitely make today SP1 release day.

Update: According to Tom Warren at WinRumors, the public download isn’t coming today. Rather, the original post was announcing the availability of the Windows 7 SP1 RTM to OEMs today.

Motorola i886 runs some form of Android — without a touchscreen?

Let’s first off start by saying we have no idea what, exactly the recently announced Motorola i886 is running other then to say it’s some form Android. With that out of the way, what you’re looking at is apparently some sort of frankendroid built by Motorola and destined for Sprints iDen network.  It has very few "normal" Android apps built into it and as noted by Phone Scoop’s in-store hands-on, it appears to be running a J2ME virtual machine that allows for installation of apps through a GetJar application. The thought for this is that it is designed to be the first non-touch based Android device since it has none of the normal touch based apps loaded onto it but thus far Motorola and Sprint are staying hush on the matter. Video can be found after the break, if you dare. [PhoneScoop]

Tick! is a fun, simple timer for Android

      tick

A timer is one of those essential applications a phone must have; note that I’m not even saying “smartphone,” but just about any phone, even the lowliest S60 Nokia phone, has a very usable timer accessible right from the ‘main screen.’

There are a ton of timers available for Android, but most use the stock UI controls and emphasize features like multiple timers, saved presets, and others I don’t really need. What I need is a fun, fast way to set up a timer and be able to move on. Tick! fits the bill quite perfectly.

The UI looks kind of like an old six-shooter cylinder. You just turn the big dial around, and the minutes on the slider increment. Once you dial in the duration you want to count down from, just hit the big green ‘ON’ button in the middle, and the timer starts counting down.

It’s accurate down to a single minute. The only flaw I found is that, by default, it uses your phone’s ringtone to alert you when the timer is up, so it sounds just like you’re getting a phone call. Luckily, this can be changed. Quite a neat little free app, and as usual, you can find the QR code right after the jump.

Getaround app turns you into Enterprise, lets your rent out your dormant whip

Oh, sure — you’re making much use of that Zipcar app already, but what if the tables were turned somewhat? For suburbanites with two cars in the garage (one of which is collecting major dust), Getaround’s mobile app allows you to be Zipcar. Put simply, those with a spare vehicle (or a vehicle that routinely stays parked for certain blocks of time each day) can load their vehicle, location, schedule and price into the app, and then nearby Earthlings can poke around and see what’s on offer. If they’re interested in taking your ride for a spin, they can hit you up via the app and agree on how many hours / days / weeks they’ll be needing it. In essence, you’re looking at peer-to-peer car sharing, with Getaround snagging 30 percent of the rental rate; speaking of rate, that can range between $4 and $25 per hour, with the owner setting the price. Those based in San Francisco can tap into the source link to become involved in the beta, and don’t be shocked if you see a Tesla Roadster listed for $25/hour — that’s actually one of Getaround’s first customers, and you can rest assured that red beauty will be calling your name this weekend.

RIM opens back door for Indian officials, promises to keep Enterprise Server locked up tight

Things weren’t looking good for BlackBerry in India, with threats of bans that were avoided at the last minute. We knew at the time that RIM had made “certain proposals” that would enable its messaging services to stay alive in India and now, about four months later, we’re learning what those proposals amount to. Basically, RIM has created a backdoor into the company’s messaging services, a “lawful access capability” that “meets the standard required by the government of India for all consumer messaging services offered in the Indian marketplace.” That’s a little disconcerting, but if you’re pinging your connects exclusively through BlackBerry Enterprise Server you can take it easy, as RIM is keeping that service locked up tight — or, at least, that’s what it wants you to believe.

Chevron WP7 jailbreak to be disabled by Windows Phone 7 update

The public download for Chevron WP7 — the jailbreak/sideloading tool for Windows Phone 7 devices — didn’t remain up for long. After initial discussions with Microsoft and a revelation that Redmond was OK with “official homebrew development,” the Chevron team decided to take the app offline. It’s still floating around, of course, and still being used by developers — though that may soon change.

On their team blog, the Chevron crew has now revealed that Microsoft’s upcoming January update to Windows Phone 7 will plug the hole Chevron WP7 used to unlock devices. They’re also getting ready to head to Washington to discuss homebrew development with Microsoft, as well as other issues raised by the WP7 community at large.

Anyone else curious what exactly “official homebrew” is?

For example, when Starbucks unveiled their new logo a few weeks ago, they immediately shared it on Instagram to get feedback. Meanwhile, NPR has been using the service to share photos from stories such as this one, a Phillippine politician’s assassination. “NPR has amazing comment threads on their stories. It’s really inspiring to see,” Instagram co-founder Kevin Systrom says.

How to hide the Ribbon menu in Microsoft Office applications

      Ribbon

This week’s series of tips will be focusing on handy little features for Microsoft Excel and Word. To see the previous tips, check our Tips index.

The new Ribbon interface on Office 2007 and 2010 is quite fancy, and once you get used to it, it’s a lot of fun to use. One of its few downsides is that it’s tall – far taller than a “traditional” menu. If you’re working on a netbook or are otherwise pressed for screen space, it can sometimes be handy to collapse the Ribbon and make it as compact as a regular menu.

To collapse it, simply double-click one of the Ribbon’s tabs, such as “Home”. The whole thing will instantly shrink down to the line of tabs. Clicking a tab will temporarily expand it back. If you’d rather do the same thing using the keyboard, simply hit Ctrl+F1 (that’s what I normally do).

My Nomination For The Worst/Best Official URL Ever: ?RIM.jobs?

If you don’t know what the term “rimjob” means, I wouldn’t recommend Googling it. Mainly because if I did recommend it, I’d get fired. Lets just say this: it has absolutely nothing to do with cars. Or basketball. If you do know what the term means, you’ll probably find it a bit entertaining that the URL Rim.jobs is being used in a perfectly safe-for-work way. More accurately, it’s being used in a perfectly safe-for-getting-work way.

Evernote for webOS update brings better formatting and tagging, improved notebook view

One of the marquee apps for webOS has received a significant update, with Evernote adding loads of new functionality to its latest version. Among the additions are notebook sorting and filtering options, and a list view for displaying your notes without thumbnails — a nice way to save a little mobile bandwidth. The editor has also been greatly improved and now offers richer text formatting options, including a choice of 30 font colors.

Adding tags to notes is now easier as well — just tap the tag icon and select previously-used tags from the list. Currently the list closes after you make your first selection, so hopefully Evernote will change that behavior to make adding multiple tags a smoother process. You’ll also only see six tags, and the list isn’t scrollable — so you can only pick from the tags Evernote chooses to display.

To close their official announcement, the Evernote team dangles a carrot in front of users, saying they’re “committed to the webOS platform, so you can expect lots more in the future.” As someone who owns a Palm Pre, that’s nice to hear.
