What Is a ROADM?

In a fiber optic network that employs wavelength division multiplexing (WDM), reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexers (ROADMs) are devices used to remotely add, block, pass or redirect modulated blaze emissions-infrared and visible-within a range of wavelengths. With ROADM devices, signal switching does not require optical-to-electric and electric-to-optical conversions. Instead, outgoing blaze beams can be generated, incoming beams can be terminated or beams can be passed through the device unmodified.
